How well do you know your solvent terminology?

Solvent: A liquid product with the strength and capability of dissolving another substance.

Solute: The substance dissolved in a solvent, thereby forming a solution.

Solids: What will remain when solvent evaporates. Includes solute and fillers.

Diluent: A liquid used to dilute the concentration of other liquids.

Solvency: The ability to dissolve something. In coatings, the solvent must dissolve the resin and reduce viscosity so it can be applied.

Evaporation Rate: Rate at which a solvent evaporates. Generally, a scale is used with-butyl acetate at 1.0. Faster solvents have higher numbers, slower are lower.

Co-Solvent: A secondary solvent used in a system to increase solvency, coalesce the system, or evaporate

VOC (Volatile Organic Compound): An organic compound easily transformed into vapors or gases.
