    Questions:

    1. Are you familiar with the tools above? What tools are presented above?

    2. Describe each tool presented above.

    3. What tool should you use in cleaning nails? The one which function well or the one

    which is rusty?

    4. What do you think is the reason why the tool became rusty?

    5. Which tool above you think is in good condition? What about the other? Why?

    6. Based in the picture, if a tool is in good condition, can it function well? Why do you

    say so?

In the activity above, we can tell the first picture from the left is a nail cutter and it is

rusty. The other tool is a cuticle nipper and it is neat and clean. As what I have said earlier,

decontamination keeps our tools clean and safe at the same time in good condition. Based on

the picture, we can conclude that the cuticle nipper is decontaminated well and function very

well too, while the other one, which is the nail cutter is rusty and probably dull and is in poor

condition. So, when can we say that a tool is functional? And when can we say that a tool is

non-functional. Ready your notes and sharpen your brain as you find out the answer in the

    next part of our module.

Tools and equipment are important in every service. It can be said that it is the lifeblood

of the beautician. It is of great use if a beautician knows how to inspect the tools and identify

its state. In this module, you will learn about the qualities of a good tool, and when can we say

that a tool is in poor condition. Broaden your mind about these topics in reading the information

    below.

    Functional Tools are:

✓ Not faulty, damaged, or destroyed

    ✓ Not rusty

    ✓ Not defective

✓ Efficient and effective to use

    ✓ Can function very well

Non-Functional Tools are tools which are not able to perform its regular function

because of its impaired and damaged part. These tools are considered as tools in poor

condition. Either needed to be disposed, repaired, or replaced. The characteristics of Non-

    Functional Tools are:

    ✓ Faulty, damaged, or destroyed

    ✓ Rusty

    ✓ Defective

✓ Not efficient of effective to use

    ✓ Cannot function very well

✓ Can cause accidents or injury if used

Now, we already know the characteristics of a defective tool and those which are in

good condition. How do we know that our tools are in good condition? What should we do? Is

simple inspection enough? These questions will be answered as you read further.

Methods of Identifying Functional and Non-functional Tools

    1. Visual Inspection refers to visual observation of an expert on the appearance of the

    tools and equipment.

    2. Functionality includes vibration or extra noise from the operation means problems on

parts and accessories started to develop.

    3. Performance is when there is something wrong with the performance of either hand

tools or equipment, they need immediate repair or maintenance.

    4. Power Supply (for electrically operated only) are those tools that failed to meet the

required power supply, malfunction will occur in the part of hand tools or equipment.

    5. Person’s Involved refers to the technical person who has knowledge and skills about

How to Classify Functional and Non-Functional Tools?

    1. Make an inventory of functional and non-functional tools in your shop.

Inventory is to make list of things, situation, events, or circumstances. It is a

complete list of items such as property, goods in stock, or the contents of a building or

shop. It is a detailed list of all the things in a place. It is an itemized list of current assets

    How to do an inventory?

    1) Identify the things, situations, events, circumstances, assets, contents, or goods

    you will need or use.

    2) Make a list or a checklist of all those things you identified.

    3) Give remarks to the things you have identified.

    2. Classify each tool according to its function.

Classifying the tools, materials, and equipment according to function can help

you trace and find out the functionality and performance of that specific implement.

    3. Write a description of the status of each tool and equipment.

There should be a description for every tool, material, and equipment for ease

of work and others can also look at your work. Putting description does not limit to

function but the current state of the tools. This will be the basis on what action you will

    do regarding the tools.

Inventory of Things to be Done after Servicing the Clients

At the end of every working session, make an inventory of the things that should be

    done:

    a. Tools which are made of plastic should be kept clean and sanitized properly in preparation

    for the next client.

    b. Empty bottles and containers are discarded in a covered trash bin.

    c. Used treatment products and other chemicals are stored, arranged, and properly labeled

    in the cabinet.

    d. Finger bowls must be sanitized before another client use them.

    e. The hand and foot spa machines must be kept dry after disinfecting them.

    f. Tabletops and door handles are wiped with disinfectant and the floor should be mopped

    with disinfectant as well

    g. Metal tools and instruments must be sterilized following proper sterilization techniques.

After the process, store in a dry cabinet until needed.

    h. Tools/implements which are made of porous materials such as nail files, buffers, nail

brushes and orangewood sticks can harbor bacteria easily. Since they are wood products

which cannot be sterilized, these tools should not be reused.

DISCLAIMER: The contents and pictures are used to put emphasis and to show concrete examples for deeper understanding of the lesson. These

    i. Waste materials should be disposed of properly in an enclosed waste bin fitted with

polythene bag. The bin should be sanitized with disinfectant regularly in a well- ventilated

area. Remember to wear protective gloves while doing this.

    j. Any tool or equipment in poor condition must be repaired immediately, replaced, or

disposed of properly so as not to pose danger not only to the clients but also to the

    beauticians.

Another way of prolonging the life of tools and avoid the destruction or any defects on

    implements.

    4. Supplies:

    a. Unused supplies, except product application brushes, are stored in a clean, closed

    container or drawer.

    b. Used/soiled disposable supplies are discarded immediately in a clean, closed waste

    receptacle.

    5. Implement Storage:

    a. Implements that have been used on a client or soiled in any manner are placed in a

properly labeled covered receptacle until disinfected.

    b. Sanitized implements are stored in a clean closed container or drawer until used.
