Valley Animal Care Guide Valley Animal Care Guide

It’s an exciting time for pet owners and their pets. Because of the advancements in veterinary care over the years, pets are living longer and their owners are reaping the benefits by enjoying their companions for extended years. The best way you can help your pet live a long healthy life is by providing regular veterinary care, a healthy diet and daily exercise.

An Ounce of Prevention Taking pets to the veterinarian for regular check ups, vaccinations and den-tal care is the first step in preventative medicine for animals. But there is much more to prevention. Your veterinarian is a great resource of information about your pet. So, ask questions. Be aware of dangers in the house and in the desert that may affect your pet. One problem that veterinarians are seeing more often is the accidental ingestion of human medicines by pets. “As our population ages, more and more medications are found in the home,” says Richard Panzero, DVM, with River Road Pet Clinic. “Some of these medi-cations are appealing to pets because of smell, taste or packaging. This can

lead to serious or deadly results. A single Tylenol can kill a cat. Be sure to keep all medications safely out of reach of pets, and never assume human drugs are ap-propriate for animals.” Another issue that has significant influence on the health of animals is their weight. Obesity in pets can effect most of their body systems but most commonly the musculoskeletal (muscles, bones and joints), respiratory, cardiovas-cular and endocrine (hormonal, such as diabetes mellitus) systems. “Without a doubt, your pet’s body weight has one of the greatest influences on many disease states. Your pet’s optimal body weight can easily be maintained by controlling food intake and ensuring routine exercise. Keeping your pets at optimal body weight has been

shown to significantly prolong and im-prove their quality of life,” says Michael Matz, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM, with Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson.

Food and Nutrition Today, there are more choices than ever in the pet-food aisle. So how do you decide which pet food is the best one for your animal? Your veterinarian is a good source of information to help you make this decision. But the final choice will most often be based on cost, the avail-ability of the pet food and any health issues your animal might have. The nutrition label on the food pro-vides information about the ingredients. Look for a statement that the product is AAFCO approved for the daily require-ments for all stages of your pet’s life. Like human foods, the first ingredient listed on the label is the most predomi-nant in the food. You’ll want to look for the animal protein source used in the food such as beef, chicken or lamb, which are all fine for most pets. You may see “by-products” listed as an ingredient. By-products are organ meat and fat. According to Ron Tenney, DVM, with Oasis Animal Hospital, there are many pet foods on the market with excellent ingredients and many more with inferior ingredients. Actual meat, meat meal, chicken meal, etc. are of far greater benefit than by-products. “I would like to see by-products fourth or fifth on the list of ingredients rather than second or third,” he says, adding that by-products tend to be lower in nutritional value. Higher quality foods tend to satisfy animals more, which allows for smaller portions at mealtimes. In terms of the current “grain-free” fad in pet foods, Dr. Tenney says, “I don’t think there is a problem with having grains in pet foods unless an animal has a sensitivity to grains.” Dr. Tenney added that carbohydrates have to be included in a balanced diet and must come from some source such as potatoes. And how much of these foods should you be giving your pet every day? In this case, Dr. Tenney says to be skeptical of the label, which tends to direct owners to

give animals more than they need, espe-cially if the pet is inactive. Since obesity is such a common problem, overfeeding is a great concern. But he says low-calorie treats are okay as long as they are used in moderation. He adds, “Be careful about picking out the treat. Give your pet frozen peas, carrots or one of the many low-calorie treats that are available.”

Advancements in Veterinary MedicineTo say veterinary medicine has advanced in the past 10 to 15 years is almost an understatement. In fact, veterinary medi-cine has become so advanced that pets can now receive the same diagnostics and treatments as humans. Indeed, veterinary medicine has become more specialized, which has led to a variety of veterinary specialists, just like human medicine. A board-certified veterinary specialist has completed an internship and residency in their special-ized field (an additional three to five years of training) and passed rigorous examinations to receive board certifica-tion. Although, the first line of defense in keeping your pet healthy is always the general practitioner veterinarian. If your animal has a challenging case, needs more specialized care or needs higher level testing to be done, your veterinarian will then recommend a specialist. Because of all this knowledge, pets are living longer. “We are getting more and more trained specialists, and people

Valley Animal Care Guide

want that level of care for their pets,” Jim Maciulla, DVM, with Continental Animal Wellness Center says. “We have 30-plus year old horses. Ten to 20 years ago that was unheard of. And we have small dogs and cats living past 20 years of age.” According to Janet Bailey, DVM, DACVIM, with Desert Veterinary Medi-cal Specialists, there have been a couple things that have really been a huge help to veterinarians in caring for animals. The first is the ability to analyze their blood in the office quickly. The second has been the use of radiographs and ultrasounds to get a good look inside the animal without being invasive.Today, many diseases that were death sentences for pets are now curable or can be managed with diet and medicine. For instance, 20 plus years ago, a horse with severe colic rarely survived. Today, with hospitals and whole teams of doctors who can surgically help a horse with colic, it’s common for these cases to survive. Dr. Maciulla says diabetes in patients can be managed and so can pain. He says he even offers acupuncture in his office to help manage pain in animals. Many types of surgery can now be performed on animals including laparoscopy and laser surgery. Cancer treatment has also come a long way for animals. Surgically removing tumors and the use of radiation have cured many patients. Dr. Bailey says veterinarians have become very good at managing kidney disease, also, with the use of diet regulation and medications. “If it is an acute case, we can do dialysis. We can also do kidney transplants for cats,” she says.If your pet does have surgery, don’t be surprised if your veterinarian recommends physical therapy, which is a rapidly growing area of expertise in veterinary medicine.

Emerging Diseases Though advancements in veterinary medicine have been substantial over the years, there are still diseases out there that can harm your pet or cause significant damage. Being aware of these diseases can be half the battle to protecting your pet. Some of these illnesses are spread by

mosquitoes. One such disease is heart-worm, which can be deadly for both cats and dogs. In Arizona, the number of heartworm cases increased when already infected pets were relocated to Arizona after the Katrina disaster. Another factor is visiting pets from heartworm preva-lent areas that are not on a preventative. There are medicines such as pills, topicals or injectables (just for dogs) available that can be given to cats and dogs to prevent this disease. West Nile virus, also spread by mosquitoes, continues to be an issue in Maricopa County. Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that is spread through the urine or bite of an infected animal, has been reported more often recently. Wild animals as well as rodents, dogs and horses are at risk. Lep-tospirosis can cause acute kidney and liver failure. If caught in time, it can be treated with antibiotics. Because it can be spread to humans, leptospirosis needs to be treated aggressively. The best prevention is to keep your pet away from wildlife and water that may be contaminated with animal urine. Another type of bacterial disease show-ing up more often in pets is a contagious superbug known as MRSA, a type of staph infection. An animal with MRSA (Staph aureus) has been infected by a person or contaminated objects. It is then that an animal can pass it on to a person. Overall good hygiene, especially when dealing with cuts or open sores, is important to prevent MRSA. Treatment often includes antibiot-ics. Rabies virus can be spread from an infected mammal to other mammals, including people. Pets, including horses and livestock, should be vaccinated to prevent the spread of rabies. In addition, stay away from wild animals including raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats, which are common carriers of the virus. Advice from a Board-Certified Specialist:

Q: How do I know if my pet parrot is sick?

A: Birds hide symptoms of disease until they are very ill. Any change in appetite, breathing, vocalization, ac-tivity and droppings – or a fluffed bird – should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian. The eyes and nostrils should be without discharge, swelling or redness. Feathers should be brightly colored, smooth, shiny and clean.

Your bird needs an initial exam and yearly veterinary checkups just like your dog or cat. Most people are surprised that their seemingly healthy bird has heart disease or infections. Routine care will maximize your bird’s health and life span, and often can reduce the long-term cost of caring for your feathered friend.

Ask an Equine Veterinarian:

Q: I recently started taking riding lessons and really want a horse of my own. What should I know before buying my first horse?

A: Buying a horse is exciting. There are just as many rewards in horse ownership as there are responsibilities. Before mak-ing your purchase, there are many issues that should be considered. Do your homework. Look for a horse that is best-suited for your skill level as a rider and your interests and goals. Find out as much as you can about the horse’s age, experience, health history and temperament. Also, take a realistic look at your budget and stick to it. Partner with the right professionals to help you make an informed decision. Have a trainer or experienced rider try as many different horses as possible. A pre-purchase exam performed by a qualified veterinarian will help assess a horse’s overall health status, as well as help identify potential physical prob-lems or maintenance issues related to your intended use of your new horse. For beginning riders, older more expe-rienced horses may offer more options but may require more maintenance. Cur-rent veterinary medical treatments can help extend the working life, health and enjoyment of an older horse.
