LIBRARY INSTRUCTION FOR SPCM 101
Mid-1990’s - Extra Credit “Drop-In” classes offered for SPCM 101, Fundamentals of Speech students
2005 - Library instruction sessions became a required component for all sections of SPCM 101
Sessions included:Introduction to the Library’s Website and Services Reference MaterialsCQ ResearcherProQuestLexisNexis Academic
NEED FOR CHANGE
Staffing Shortage
Librarians frustrated with the sessions Timing of SessionsQuantity of information included in each session
Speech Instructors shared these frustrations and enthusiastic about trying something new
Online tutorial would be useful for SPCM 101 classes that are offered off-site and via the internet

Students work in groups of 6 to complete several “clues” related to a specific country
Course instructor introduces the activity
Librarian gives an overview of locations of items in the library and of the library’s website
