Spartan Spirit April 2014 Editor - Morgan Fatteicher
I hope that all of you have a restful and safe spring break. It is hard
to believe that the first seven months at KCI have already passed
and we are more than half done the school year! It is a pleasure to
work with such focused students and committed staff. I am proud of the progress of KCI stu-
dents! Remember that regular school attendance, a positive attitude and being engaged in
learning are instrumental in achieving academic success.
The KCI staff is a special group of people. Our teachers hold high expectations for themselves
and their students. They believe that all students want to learn and can be successful so the fo-
cus is on teaching strategies that will make it possible. Opportunities are provided for teachers
through bimonthly PLC team meetings, assessment planning workshops and division profes-
sional development sessions. Teacher teams spend time sharing teaching strategies, planning
for instruction, and looking for new ways to improve learning. Teacher collaboration for plan-
ning and instruction, assessment to inform teaching, frequent student feedback on learning,
lesson planning around clearly identified outcomes and strategies to support students who are
not learning are clearly evident at KCI.
Lastly, at this time of year we begin developing our prelimi-
nary plans for the 2014/2015 school year. Part of this process
is receiving input from students. In May we will have our stu-
dents complete a comprehensive anonymous on-line survey
asking for their input about what they liked about KCI as well
as suggestions for improvement via the Tell Them From Me
Survey.

The Government of Saskatchewan launched the Student First online engagement tool, which will
assist the Student First Advisors to collect feedback from students, parents, teachers and the public
on what is going well in the education system, what could be better and how we can work to put the
student first.
The online tool provides the opportunity for the public to submit written submissions, respond to a
survey and validate themes heard so far by responding to key questions. The tool can be found
here:www.studentfirstsk.ca.
Please share this with students, parents and teachers and the public through your regular channels.

THREE KCI STUDENTS VOLUNTEERING IN NICARAGUA AUGUST 2014
Lexie Tomochko, Kaylie Bowes and Cassidy Aker are going to go to Nicaragua August 6 -14,
2014 with Free the Children. Free the Children is the world’s largest youth helping youth charity
program in the world.
KCI attended WE DAY in November 2013 and the girls were moved to make a difference by par-
ticipating in the overseas summer volunteer program in Nicaragua.
The girls are fundraising as well as hoping for sponsorships. So far they have run three conces-
sions at KCI and have two more KCI concessions arranged as well as other fundraising sales.
On Sunday, March 30th they ran the concession for the trade show being held at the Legion Hall,
where there was a Free the Children trade table set up.
Please come out and support the girls in their fundraising efforts. The girls also welcome any
other fundraising opportunities and would welcome donations as well.
If you have any other questions, or would like to get in touch with the girls regarding a fundrais-
ing opportunity or donation, please contact Glenda Tulloch at [email protected] or call at
306-542-2521.
Thank you.
On Thursday, March 20th, Grades 6 – 12 were able to hear stories and view original artwork from Con-
temporary sculptor Darren Gowan.
As a young man, raised in the Caribbean and urban Ottawa, Darren began a journey
that strengthened his connection to his First Nations heritage (he is Plains Cree and
member of the Day Star First Nation) and found his true calling as an artist. Darren
began carving in 1992 with antlers, bones, horns, and hooves of Deer, Moose, and
Elk, and carved his frst full Moose Antler in 1993. In 1997 he began working with
stone.
Darren works with various types of stone, including Catlinnite, Steatite, Alabaster,
Marble, Serpentine, Argillite, Soapstone, Wappaweeka and Wonderstone. He works
also in clay and plasticine, and enjoys exploring different media, such as glass, mixed media and bronze.
Many of Gowan's works can be found throughout North America. His sculptural works have also been present-
ed to dignitaries, ambassadors, and politicians, and are in private and public collections worldwide. He current-
ly works and resides in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Ongoing Art Work…
Grade 5 – Students are working on a “Doodling” piece in which they explore
the elements and principles of art while practicing the meditative value of the
doodle.
Grade 6 – Students are creating Mandalas which are considered to be a spiritual
and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the Universe.
Grade 7 – Students are finishing up a research unit on Artists and Place. They have chosen artists from all
across Canada and have created biographies, Power Point presentations and visual art work in response to their
research.
Grade 8 – Students have just started an exciting project based on ledgendary Canadian artist Norval Morris-
seau. Morrisseau is credited with the creation of the art movement “Woodland Art” and co-founder of the First
Nations Group of Seven Artist collective.
Grade 9 – Students are mid-way through an exciting paper mache project where they are working with the
complexities of crafting a 3 dimensional object from a 2 dimensional design. Subject matter ranges from block
letters, to penguins to cowboy boots and planets.
Senior Art – Students are working on large quilt piece based on the Woodland style of artist Norval Morris-
seau. They are painting on raw canvas patches, which will later be stitched together to form a large tapestry
that will be displayed in the school.
Community Involvement
*There is some student art work on display at the hospital in the reception area.
*We are also still looking for gently used picture frames to exhibit student art work in the town library.

The basketballs are put away and now badminton birdies are landing in the ceiling fans daily. The students
have been busy working through badminton skills over the last couple weeks as teams get ready for the junior
and senior badminton seasons. We will complete our 2nd fitness beep test of the year before Easter break so
make sure you prepare and try to beat your personal best! There will be a lacrosse clinic coming to teach about
the skills and strategy of the sport on April 10th. Once the snow melts we will try to get outside daily for our
classes. There is a new score clock installed at KCI; if you’re in the school stop by and check it out. The 2014
grad mural was also installed in gym #1 over February break.
Mr. & Mrs. Kitchen have started an indoor track and field club in Kamsack. Practices
are held twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-8:00pm) and focus on
not only track and field skills, but also strength, speed, agility, balance, endurance, and power work outs. The
athletes have been working hard so far and we hope the hard work will pay off not only in track and field sea-
son, but every sport they participate in. Two students participated in the Saskatoon Kinsmen Indoor track and
field meet. Holden LaBelle brought home two gold medals in running events.
This spring, KCI will play host to the East Central Pre-district Meet on Wednesday May 21, with athletes ad-
vancing to Yorkton for the District Championship. Once the snow melts, Mr. Kitchen will be looking for vol-
unteers to help work on the track and get it ready for competition. Those wanting to volunteer their time or re-
sources can contact Mr. Kitchen at KCI.
Also, don’t forget that the 2014-15 SHSAA Cross-Country Championship will be held at Madge Lake Golf
Course on October 4. Anyone wishing to volunteer on October 4 or the week leading up to it, please contact
Mr. Kitchen at [email protected].

The first installment of Photography 20 has wrapped up, and the second semester group
is off and running. Semester one was the first time Photo 20 was offered to KCI stu-
dents and their work did not disappoint. The current plan is to take the best of the best
in semester 1 and 2 and create a calendar for the 2014-15 school year which will show-
case the town of Kamsack and area using only the photos taken by KCI students. The
calendar will be sold near the end of the year. If you’d like to take a look at some of the
great work our students have been doing, you can check them out on the TVs in the
hallways at KCI, search Mr. Kitchen on Flickr, LIKE our Photography 20 Facebook
page, or check out the KCI Website where you’ll notice a new Photo from the students
each week at the top of the page. When the weather turns nice, you will see the students
walking around KCI and Kamsack with their cameras. Smile and wave!
DID YOU KNOW? Maleysia Brass – a semester one Photography 20 student from KCI was asked by Kam-
sack Minor Hockey to do the individual and team photo’s for all teams in Kamsack.
DID YOU KNOW? Jaelyn Dietz – another semester one Photography 20 student entered an international Pho-
tography contest with a chance to win a $1000 top prize.

A close, come-from-behind win against Norquay gave the girls the momentum that they used for a mon-
strous 17-3 record in 2014. In that game, Kaytlyn Placetka hit 2 free throws in the final seconds of the
game for a 2 point win. The win against Norquay boosted the girls’ confidence, sparked late-season
push, and also taught the girls how to win close games. Victories at tournaments in Swan River, Langen-
burg, and our own invitational brought the girls multiple plaques and awards. Important victories in-
clude wins over Canora (4 times), Sacred Heart Yorkton (twice), Norquay (3 times), Esterhazy (twice),
Preeceville, Creighton, Langenburg, Dalmeny, P.A. Rivier, and the 3 point victory against Assiniboia in
the Regional final. It was an amazing experience for the girls to attend Hoopla held in Regina on March
7th and 8th; the players gained invaluable experience. The girls would like to thank all the fans and com-
munity members for their support and especially for the tremendous turn-out for our Hoopla games!
We’ll work hard to return to Hoopla next year! Our team was composed of 4 grade twelves (Taylor
Hudye, Natasha Hauserman, Mackenzie Bielecki, and Sophia Thomas), 4 grade elevens (Cassidy Irvine,
Kaytlyn Placetka, Jaelyn Dietz, and Kali Wyllychuk), and 5 grade tens (Kiera Nikiforoff, Malee Shingoose,
Cassidy Aker, Lexie Tomochko, and Kaylie Bowes). Thank you to Mr. Dietz and Naomi Tensen for coach-
ing with me! We will miss our senior basketball players next year but we wish them the best of luck in
their future as KCI graduates. Girls that are returning next year – look for a summer basketball camp to
attend!

The 2013-2014 Kamsack Lady Spartans ended their regular season with 16 wins and 4 losses. This was a
good enough record for the Spartans to be ranked #1 in their conference.
KCI opened up the playoffs with a solid effort and defeated Preeceville 55-13. In the next round of
playoffs, they defeated Sturgis 28-24 in an excellent game. This win propelled the Spartans into the Dis-
trict Championships as the #2 ranked team.
Districts were held on March 7th and 8th at Melville Comprehensive School. There were 8 solid teams
from our district that qualified for this season ending tournament. Our Spartans knocked off three quali-
ty teams in bringing home the gold medal. They defeated Melville 46-13, Yorkton Regional 42-26 and Sa-
cred Heart (Yorkton) 31-28.
This ended another excellent season for our Lady Spartans. We would like to thank all the parents, family
and community members, and all fans who helped cheer us on this past season. Especially the Sr. Spar-
tans who stopped in Melville after their Regional Playoffs …..this boost of cheering was no doubt an asset
and helped us come back in the fourth quarter versus S.H.H.S.
Coach: Mr. D. Placatka
While the basketball season may be half done, for the Spartan Jr. Boys team
it is only half begun! Thus far this season, they have put together an incredi-
ble run as they continue to come together as a team and remain unbeaten with an 11-0 record. This sea-
son has been truly one to remember as, with only 5 returnees from last year’s roster, the team has liter-
ally rebuilt in an instantaneous fashion.
Along the way the boys have, thus far, collected championships at the Sturgis Tournament as well as de-
fending their KCI title from last season. Looking at this year’s squad, the future of KCI boys’ basketball is
looking bright. The greatest asset of these young men, is their team-first mentality. They recognize that
every game is won or lost as a team, and accept their responsibility to contribute accordingly.
These young men are great ambassadors for KCI; diligent, focused, and hardworking. They practice hard
and never quit. Be loud and proud of your boys in Spartan blue!
The 2013-14 Spartan Jr. Basketball squad is comprised of: Nicholas Tomochko, Zac McGriskin, Michael
Chan, Austin Leis, Austin Thomas (Captain), Denton Dietz, Taryn Broda, Latrelle Lynx, Hayden Tourand,
Jaraden Bryksa, Nathan Bielecki, Colin Tulloch (Captain), Austin Hilderman, Lionel Cote (Captain), and
Dyllan Cote. Head Coach James Graham, Manager Michele Tomochko, and Assistant Coach Ryan Stanko

KCI will greatly miss coach Graham next year. Thank you to coach for all the
hours of work and dedication you put in to our basketball teams.
In the shop the students have been working hard on their projects and assignments. Many students have been
drafting, repairing small and large engines, and laithing. The students have also been welding with arc and
acetylene gas. Our students have completed many projects for individuals and for the school at large. We have
also been able to build beds for the senior drama as well as other school projects. In the next two weeks we
will begin building trailers again so students can learn with hands on. They will be learning about axels, bear-
ings and DC wiring.

Mathematics 9 and Foundations and Pre-calculus
The winter months have come and gone and the grade 9 math students at KCI have progressed along through
their Patterns and Relations outcomes. They have steadily improved on their algebra skills and are looking for-
ward to grade 10. Also, they have been improving their mental math and problem solving strategies.
In grade 10, students have moved over from their Workplace and Apprenticeship course over to their Founda-
tions and Pre-calculus course. This course is a little more abstract than the first semester math and currently the
students are working on outcomes associated to fractional and negative exponents. Major decisions will be
made in the upcoming weeks as our grade 10 students choose their pathways for their grade 11 and 12 years.
Spring is here! Does that mean that the golf course will be open soon???
- Mr. Placatka
The Senior Drama production is finishing its final stages of rehearsals and we will beginning full run through
next week. The actors have been working hard and are set to put on a great performance of the drama 4 AM by
Johnathan Dorf. Our dates at present are still tentative but will hopefully be confirmed next week. The plans at
present are to put on a dinner theatre on April 7th and a second performance date to be determined. The Senior
Drama production is also performing at The Drama Festival in Yorkton again this year. Their performance
date is the Thursday, April 10th. The students will also be viewing other schools performances, attending
workshops, and celebrating at a final banquet and awards dinner at the end of the festival.
We have been in contact with Johnathan Dorf, the playwright, who has been communicating his ideas on sets
and has given us a great deal of encouragement on our performance of his play. It has added to the creativity
and commitment that we all have to putting on a good show! The play, 4 AM will star the following actors;
Reuben Bugera, Kyle Morgan, Hanna Wosminity, Mikhail Chutskoff, Jayden Raabel, Mike Puk, Allison
Placatka, Jaelyn Dietz, Henry Thomas, Kaytlyn Placatka, Mikayla Woloshyn, Kali Wyllychuk, Jalyssa
Woloshyn, and Zayne Wanless. The Stage Manager & Student Director is Sophia Thomas and Lights & Sound
is Devin Klapatiuk. Kelsey Maitwiejko is going to assist with hair and makeup.
We are looking forward to the performances and will have definite information posted on the school website
and in the Kamsack Times as soon as we have everything 100% confirmed. We thank the community and the
school for their continued support of our artistic endeavors and hope that you will enjoy our latest production.

5b has been busy exploring new topic areas for the last month. In ELA, we are working on using a variety of
reading strategies to help with reading comprehension. We're continuing to work on our spelling and grammar
skills while also using the program "All the Right Type" to improve typing skills.
We just finished a unit on first-hand and second-hand data in math. Students learned how to collect their own
first-hand data and use the information they collected to create double bar graphs. We have now started a unit
on geometry and are learning how to describe 2D and 3D shapes using their attributes.
In Science, we are investigating the properties of the states of matter. Students have been conducting a variety
of experiments to learn about the different states and changes of matter. Next up they will be designing their
own experiment to further explore this topic area.
5B students are learning more about themselves and how to have a healthful self-concept in health class. They
have been creating comics, playing games, and will soon be developing skits in order to better understand this
particular subject.
In Social Studies, 5B students have been learning about the events that led to the building of Canada. They are
currently researching the different provinces and territories to learn when and why they entered Confederation.
Finally, our class has been having fun being active as well. The students are now enjoying taking physical ed-
ucation classes with Mr. Dietz. They have recently gone on a x-country skiing trip in Duck Mountain Provin-
cial Park. On April 1st, they will be joining their grade 5 and 6 peers at the 6th Annual Standards Track and
Field meet in Yorkton.
Mrs. Guillet, who has replaced Ms. Pennell while she is on maternity leave, is looking forward to meeting the
parents and/or guardians of her new students when they come to Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews!!!
We are learning in an interdisciplinary unit in ELA and Science about the Solar System. We explored some pos-
sibilities about how to learn the three Science outcomes. For all three outcomes, the students chose to do inquiry
learning. We started by creating videos in small groups to explain the seasons of the Earth, the phases of the
moon, and solar and lunar eclipses. We are tackling the second outcome -which is exploring the features of the
solar system like planets, asteroids, the sun- in pairs and students have choice about how they want to present
their answers to their inquiry questions. We are going to split into three groups -Canada, United States, & the
rest of the world- to investigate the past, present, and future of human space exploration.
Shape and Space has been the primary strand in Mathematics. Students are in the midst of communicating ef-
fectively about mathematical transformations -translations, rotations, & reflections- using quilt designs that they
created in the first quadrant of the Cartesian Plane.
In Social, we are learning about power, authority, and influence.
In Phys. Ed, we are getting ready to run, jump, high jump, and put a shot for the upcoming indoor track
meet. We had a great day at Duck Mountain Provincial Park cross-country skiing & snowshoeing. We are also
putting Broda Sportsplex to good use by skating frequently in the month of March.
Mr. Thomas will be piloting the renewed grade 6 Treaty Education curriculum starting this week.

First I will tell you a little bit about what we are learning in Math. Our unit in math is shape and space so we
are creating art pieces that show different types of polygons and angles. We had to learn how to use a pro-
tractor and how to draw and measure angles.
In ELA we are starting small group novel studies. Miss Nichol gave us book options and we chose our 5 fa-
vorites. Small group novel studies are good because students get to choose which books they are interested
in. We read in our small groups and then complete a literature circle discussion to talk about the main mes-
sages in the book.
In Health we are looking at what makes healthy relationships. We have created our own skits showing
healthy and unhealthy relationships.
In Social Studies we have been looking at power and different people who have experiences abuses of power
or injustices. Our final project was to write a letter showing the injustices and thinking of a way to make a
change.
In Science we just began a unit on Flight. We have looked at the four forces of flight: thrust, lift, drag and
gravity. Also, we just finished researching different flight inventions.
Written by: Maison D.
This is what 7A has been doing! We had a great time cross country skiing and art the Battle of the Sexes as-
sembly. In ELA we are starting a new unit on Voices Through the Ages Reconstructing the Past. At the mo-
ment we're writing essays on the past, present, and future.
For math we’re doing geometry with our geometry sets. In phys. Ed. We are working on badminton, dodge
ball games, and fitness. In social studies we are working on a unit called Power and Authority. In health we are
learning about nutrition and we are going to make grilled cheese.
In science we’re making experiments on heat and temperature, and in art we are making the artist’s style of art.
In library we’re finishing researching books. For band class, we’re looking at sheet music, we just started to
make our own music. In career education we are looking at jobs and their dangers.
June 12-14 is our grade 7 class trip to Winnipeg. A preliminary note was sent home in February. Save your $!!
Home Ec. Fees are due NOW!A friendly reminder to all second semester grade 8 students the majority of
you need to pay your $20.00 fee and PAA10 the majority of your owe your $30.00 fee to the office now as
monies are need to help purchase sewing and cooking supplies. As well Grade 9 sewing students this is a re-
minder that your money for fees and sewing supplies needs to be to the office by April 1. (Letters were given
to students at the start of March to take home.) Projects will not begin until the fees are paid. If you have any
questions contact the office at KCI.

In ELA we have just started a new unit titled “Personal Best”. We started learning about influential people
and are currently working on a letter to write to an inspirational person. We are also learning about three types
of irony – dramatic, situational, and verbal.
In math we are working on patterns and relations, and algebraic expressions. In social studies we are learning
about the pros and cons of globalization, as well as information about the United Nations. In Career Ed. We
are focusing on occupations. In band we are starting projects on different music and their origins. We just
started working on exceptionalities and art. In art class, we all have different exceptionalities we work with.
We are finishing a unit in science on mixtures and solutions. We decided to make a pizza to show the differ-
ences between mechanical mixtures, solutions, and pure substances. We all created experiments that we liked
and tried them out.
We are ending a unit on healthy peer relationships, peer pressure, and “I Feel” statements in health. We created
group games in Phys. Ed. that we taught to the grade 5s to show leadership. We are all looking forward to our
downhill and cross country ski trips .
The grade eight classes are beginning their unit in geometry this past week. Some of their topics include area,
perimeter, surface area, volume and the Pythagorean Theorem. In social studies, we are continuing our study
of First Nations and treaties, and have had guest speakers visit the class to share their stories and wisdom. In
science we are looking at forces and fluids, having just finished viscosity and the bubble test, we are beginning
to study density and how it works.
This has been a busy time for all grade 9’s. We have
completed our third unit with both groups. In 9A we have completed Romeo and Juliet and in 9B we have
completed our Novel study unit of Messenger. Students completed a midterm exam and just recently com-
pleted their unit end exams and unit end projects. Some students are keeping up and others are struggling.
Books should be coming home daily! Please ask your child to see their work and ELA binder daily. Please help
your child to organize their work and stay organized throughout year. Please feel free to contact me if you
have any questions and concerns. I would like to encourage all parents to come and see me during parent
teacher interviews to discuss in more detail your child’s progress.

KCI was the recipient of a new present – just in time for Track and Field Season! Mrs. Verigin deserves big thanks for applying to KidSport and receiving a $1500 grant for a new set of Hurdles. Once the grant was given, we shopped around and found John W. Konihowski and his Jones-Konihowski Enterprises Inc. track and field business. The order was placed and today the set of 10 new hurdles arrived. Pictured below are two of our biggest hurdlers here at KCI – Brooklyn & Jayden. You can catch the hurdles in action on Wednesday May 21 when KCI plays host to the pre-district track and field competition.
Once again, a BIG Thank you to KidSport and Jones-Konihowski Enterprises Inc.
New Hurdles!
