ArtStart’s MissionThe mission of ArtStart is to inspire artistic creativity and illuminate the connections among people, ideas, and the environment through quality arts education experiences for all.

About ArtStartArtStart is located in the Mac-Groveland neighborhood of Saint Paul and primarily serves the 7-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. Founded in 1988, the goals of the organization are to:

Provide integrated arts and education opportunities that engender knowledge and appreciation of art, culture and the environment among teachers and students in schools and summer programs;

Model good stewardship of the environment by recycling materials for creative use throughout the 7-country Metro area;

Enable young people and families, especially those without adequate prior access, to participate in artmaking through classes, opportunities at community festivals, partnerships with schools and social service agencies; and,

Support artists’ creativity and capacity to link art with environmental, cultural and educational issues by providing materials, employment, training and commissions.

All of ArtStart’s core programs and special projects support the mission, and include a unique blending of human creativity in the arts, and reusing materials to contribute to awareness and protection of the environment.

Repurposing Vintage Books WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 • 6-8 PM Artist Meg Erke leads you through the process of creating a hand-bound journal reusing vintage book covers. You’ll leave with your very own handmade book, plus the knowledge required to make them on your own in the future. Bring your own book and receive $5 off class tuition.

Reusing Newspaper, Feathers, & More TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10 • 6-8:30 PMWhen you put on a mask, you open yourself up to the layers of energies within that are often ignored or hidden. Create a mask that honors your spirit and inner powers with artist Julie Boada. Starting with guided meditations, shape clay, add paper mâché and finish to create your own personal spirit mask. Repurposing the Wooden Cigar Box WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 • 6-8 PMRecord the memories you hold dearest in your heart through art. Bring treasured photographs, objects, notes and more. Repurposing Plastic Bags THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 • 6-8 PM Artist Ella Thomson demonstrates how to take a variety of plastic bags and turn the into Plarn. That is right—yarn with a “pl”. Then work with the artist and weave a set of placemats that are colorful and functional. Bring your own plastic bags from home and receive $5 off class tuition.

Repurposing Glass Jars MONDAY, OCTOBER 9 • 6-8 PMSpark your creativity with artist Jeanette Dickinson and create a festive luminary using recycled glass and Modge Podge. Learn different techniques like collage and stenciling. Add a light source and illuminate a special walkway or centerpiece.

Upcycling Glass Vases WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29 • 6-8 PM

If you have a shelf full of clear glass vases that you have collected over the years, we have the perfect solution to giving them pizazz and new life! Work with artist Anne Sawyer-Aitch to add color and design using alcohol paints. You will be amazed at the outcome—good enough to give as a gift to someone special even without flowers!

Repurposing Plastic Bottles THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14 • 1:00-3:30 PMSave those plastic water bottles and other clear plastic containers that can be easily cut apart. Then bring them all to this class where you create a beautiful chandelier inspired by the art of Dale Chihuly fit to hang in any hallway. Repurposing The Button Collection FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20 • 4-6 PM No sewing experience needed. Just gather all those buttons that have popped off clothes and join artist Ella Thomson to create an elegant button necklace. Repurposing Wire & Beads TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24 • 5-7 PMThe Tree of Life is an ancient symbol found around the world in many cultures. Come learn about the history and meaning behind the symbol of the Tree of Life with artist Jeanette Dickinson. Then using a wire construction method, create your own circular pendent Tree of Life. Repurposing Memorabilia MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13 • 4-6 PMSmall treasures or photos you have collected from trips, events or loved ones before the stuff of this classy jewelry project. Learn simple jewelry techniques working with micro images, beads and more with artist Jeanette Dickinson to turn your memories into wearable art. Bring in items no larger than 1” x 1”.

Repurposing Felt TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 • 6-8 PM Julie Boada introduces the art of beading. As a member of the Fond du Lac nation, Julie teaches how patterns and colors can reflect tribal and family affiliations. Work with Julie to learn how to bead and sew your own felt pouch, as she retells favorite Anishinaabe stories about coyote, loon, and others animals of the Northern woods. All materials provided.

Reusing Feathers, Beads and More MONDAY, OCTOBER 16 • 6-8 PMWork with Rebekah Crisante de Ybarra to turn the gourd from the garden into a work of art. Inspired by gourd arts of Mexico and Latin America, design and paint your own gourd using paint pens and other decorative materials. Then add it to a centerpiece or display. All materials provided.

Upcycling A Picture Frame THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16 • 1-3 PMWork with artist Rebekah Crisante de Ybarra, to learn the ancient art of repousse or metal tooling. Then using a small repurposed wooden frame from ArtScraps, make your own relief designs using gold, silver or copper heavy foil to wrap each side of the frame create a brand new look for your favorite photo. All materials provided.

Repurposing Leather TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12 • 6-8 PMJoin artist Armando Gutierrez G. and learn about the significance of the medicine bag to indigenous cultures. Then using leather, leather tools and beads create your own medicine bag. All materials provided.

Pen and Ink DrawingWork with artist and book illustrator, Jeanette Dickinson, and explore the art of illustration using pen and ink. Learn how to use different pens and papers, practice different techniques for shading, tone, value and texture, and create a series of illustrations. All materials provided.

Painting on GlassBrought to the Americas by the Spaniards and Europeans, painting on glass is a technique that has been used for centuries. Work with artist JeanetteDickinson to learn this specialized process and create your own masterpiece.

Encaustic PaintingEncaustic painting is the art of painting with hot beeswax combined with dry pigments to create a painting medium. The paint is applied hot and makes for a dramatic layered image into which objects and photographs can be added. Work with artist Jeanette Dickinson to learn the process and techniques of encaustic painting.

Imagine giving yourself the gift of art. You choose the days that work best for you to explore materials and techniques that transform the white sheet of paper or canvas into a work of art from pen and ink to encaustic painting. Work with artist Jeanette Dickinson to learn basic art skills and techniques that you can apply to future creative projects.

ARTSTART’S ARTSCRAPS: An innovative concept that combines waste management with art making, ArtStart’s ArtScrap is a unique partnership with businesses and manufacturers, in which the organization collect scraps, overstock, factory rejects, and other items normally destined for the landfill. Products are on display, just like any other retail operation. The stock changes frequently, bringing

new surprises every week. Sample projects show how materials can be used, and an artist is available on-site to talk about project ideas. In 2016, ArtStart’s ArtScraps kept over 60,000 pounds of discards out of the waste stream.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES: If you want a creative, fun, memorable, rather trouble-free, birthday party, then try an ArtScraps Birthday Party. Our two-hour birthday party includes scrap invitations, the art project and a party favor bag for all participants to take home.

Parties are held on Saturdays and Sundays at ArtStart for ages 5 and up.

Cost: $185 for up to 10 children;$15/additional child. Limited to 12 children.

ARTSTART COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS: Led by professional artists, ArtStart Community Workshops bring art programming to community sites such as libraries, daycares, pre-schools, public housing, and organizations who want to offer high-quality art experiences for the youth they serve:

SCRAPMOBILE WORKSHOPSWe bring fabulous, funky, repurposed materials from ArtStart’s ArtScraps Materials Reuse Center to your site along with a message about the importance of the 3-R’s and art activities that spark the imagination.

Workshop topics include: Rube Goldberg’s Marble Machine; Hilarious Headpieces; Jewelry from Junk; Marvelous Mobiles; Inventor’s Workshop; Build Small; and, Junkosaurus to name a few.

MANY CULTURES/MANY VOICES WORKSHOPS Learn about other cultures, art forms, and celebrations while promoting our common bond as global citizens. Whenever possible, workshops are taught by artists from the culture who bring a wealth of cultural knowledge to each experience. Besides helping youth create exciting artistic products, many artists share artifacts, clothing, and their own artwork. Workshop topics include: African Gris Gris; Gees Bend Quilters; The Art of Remembrance: The Offrenda; Japanese Folk Art Traditions; Molas Panama Style; Spirits of the Arctic Circle; and, Folk Arts of India, plus many others.

ART AND NATURE WORKSHOPSTaught by naturalist Larry Wade and artist Jeanette Dickinson, these workshops promote environmental stewardship and learning about nature through hands-on artmaking. Some workshop topics include: Pollinator Particulars; Give A Hoot; Spirit Rocks; Critters of the Pond and Stream; and Follow the Tracks to name a few.

Passport to Egypt: Exploring the Nile River Valley Through the Arts DECEMBER 26-29, 2017 • 8:30 AM-3:30 PMTravel with ArtStart artists to Northeast Africa and the ancient land of the Pharaohs! Steeped in history, the Nile River Valley of Egypt is home to such wonders as the Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Valley of the Kings. Inspired by the history, ecology, and the culture of the Nile River Valley, you create a sarcophagus complete with a mummy inside; learn how to read hieroglyphics; create a funerary or other mask based on that of Tutankhamun; make containers and toys from red clay; and, draw and paint Nile River wildlife like the Nile crocodile to the African Tigerfish.

Passport to India: From the Himalayas to the Bay of BengalJULY 9-13 AND JULY 16-20, 2018 Week I we explore Northern India bordered by the high Himalayas mountain range and the source of the Ganges River. Week 2 we continue our sojourn down the Ganges to the Bay of Bengal through regions of Southern India. You will not want to miss this grand excursion from Northern to Southern India all through music, art, dance, storytelling, and ecology!
