Day 1 Wednesday 26th April

Heathrow – Madrid - Vina las Torres

After a late arrival in Madrid, we set on our way towards Trujillo. En route plenty of White Storks drifted over,

as well as several Black Kites. About an hour and a half into the journey we stopped for a leg stretch where we

noted Spanish Sparrow and Corn Bunting. Sadly we were unable to relocate the Great Bustard seen on the way

into the stop, but we did manage to pick up a Montagu’s Harrier hunting the fields. As we carried on we spotted

several more Montagu’s Harriers as well as several Booted Eagles.

Within an hour we turned off the motorway towards our home for the next few nights. As we turned up towards

Vina las Torres along the country lane we were greeted by Corn Bunting, Southern Grey Shrike and of course

the local Azure-winged Magpie. Reaching our final destination, we were greeted by our hosts and the local

Nightingale. We settled into our rooms before we sat down for a lovely meal and then a good night’s sleep.

Day 2 Thursday 27th April

Trujillo Bull Ring; Alcorin Dam; Campo Lugar; Madrigalejo

The day started with a morning walk near to our hotel, where we saw Praying Mantis, Cream-spot Tiger moth

and Stripeless Tree Frog at the door. Our walk also turned up Hoopoe, Red-rumped Swallow, singing

Nightingale and Golden Oriole, and a very showy Sardinian Warbler.

After breakfast we headed to the Bull Ring in Trujillo, where we were greeted by Lesser Kestrel. We then moved

on to the park where both species of Terrapin were on show as well as Black-winged Stilt, Common Sandpiper

and Little Ringed Plover.

Moving on towards Alcorin Dam, several Red Kites showed en route. On arrival we found a pair of Wigeon and

a Kingfisher on the dam, while Dappled White butterfly flitted along the edge of the car park. Carrying on along

the track, we moved on to the picnic site where we found Great Reed Warbler hiding in a small patch of reeds,

Woodchat Shrike showing well where we parked, and on the dam a flock of Spoonbills and a family group of

Egyptian Geese were feeding. We went for a wonder through the grassland where we spotted Short-toed Eagle

overhead and Cetti’s Warbler along the water’s edge. On the water Shoveler and Gadwall popped up, and Purple

Heron flew by. Other sightings included Small Copper and Common Blue butterflies amongst the grass, while

on the water’s edge Lesser Emperor and Iberian Blue-tailed Damselfly flitted round. We headed back to the

vehicle for lunch where we enjoyed the local White Storks, and a group of Griffin Vultures and two Bonelli’s

Eagles passed over.

After lunch we moved along the track and had great views of Bee-eater. We then went on to Campo Lugar

where we saw Montagu’s Harrier, Roller and, with a little effort, a Great Bustard amongst the grass.

We carried on to the Madrigalejo area where we saw Thekla Lark and heard Quail before heading home for a rest

and yet another great meal.

Day 3 Friday 28th April

Rio Almonte; Monfrague National Park

Stepping outside first thing we were greeted by the two Praying Mantis which were still around, and a Marsh

Fritillary on the door step. After breakfast we departed towards Monfrague, driving through the Oak dehesa and

soon arriving at the Rio Almonte, where we were greeted by the song of Nightingale and the chorus of Iberian

Water Frogs. Whilst we walked the bank, several showy Stonechats put on a display with a Bonelli’s Eagle

overhead. On heading back to the vehicle we surprised a Mink along a stream edge.

We headed on to Monfrague, stopping first at the Castilla where, after a short stroll, we had good views of all

three vulture species: Egyptian, Griffon and Cinereous Vultures. After a little while we headed to Pena Falcon

Rock where we found Rock Bunting, Black Redstart and Blue Rock Thrush, with Red-rumped Swallow and Crag

Martin buzzing around, and six Black Storks drifted overhead. Moving up the road, we soon came across some

Alpine Swifts and had cracking views of Black Kite. We stopped at the visitors’ center for a slightly blowy lunch.

Once we had finished lunch we headed down a nearby valley where we found Spanish Marbled White and

Brown Argus butterflies and Yellow-winged Darter. Trundling on to the Rio Tieter at the far end of the park, we

found Egyptian Vulture on the nest and, with a little effort, Spanish Imperial Eagle tackling the local vultures in

flight. Moving back through the park, we found Subalpine Warbler, Short-toed Eagle and Black-eared Wheatear.

We departed the park and headed back to the Rio Almonte, where we wondered around for a while looking for

wildlife before heading back for another great meal and bed.

Day 4 Saturday 29th April

Madronera; St Marta de Magasca plain; Monroy road; Caceres plain

It rained overnight, which carried on into the morning. Slightly earlier we headed out, calling briefly at

Madronera where we spotted Pallid Swift. We moved on to the Magasca plain where we continued to be

hampered by the rain. Moving down one of the side tracks, we went for a short walk before it got too heavy.

Calandra, Thekla and Crested Larks were present - all a little soggy! Two Great Bustards were feeding in the

fields with Iberian Hare and Rabbits, and Red-legged Partridge was also seen.

We carried on to the Monroy road where, with a little work, great views of Montagu’s Harrier and Little Bustard

were obtained. We also noted Stone-curlew and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse. We stopped for lunch in a cafe in Santa

de Magasca to shelter from the weather.

After lunch the weather cleared up and we headed out onto the Caceres plain, where we were greeted by not just

the sun but Roller, Lesser Kestrel and Little Owl. Moving on, we turned down a side track and went for a walk

with larks singing and butterflies taking to the wing in the form of Spanish Marbled White and Dappled White.

After a pleasant stroll, we headed back to the historic town of Trujillo for a look round before heading back to

our hotel, where most went for a stroll before yet another fantastic dinner and bed

Day 5 Sunday 30th April

Belen plain; Almaraz Orchid Reserve; Arrocampo; Rio Tieter; Hoyas del Espino

We started the morning by saying farewell to our great hosts of the last few days and headed to the Gredos. We

headed out on the bumpy tracks of Belen plain where we came across a group of Cinereous and Griffin Vultures

on the ground near a sheep’s carcass. After a while they moved off, as we did, but not long after we found a

displaying Great Bustard and his ‘playing hard to get’ partner. After watching him doing his little dance, we had

to travel on. As we left Belen plain a female Montagu’s put on a show.

We headed out onto the motorway and to the Orchid reserve near Almaraz. Sadly, due to the hot spring, the

orchids had gone over so we drove to Arrocampo and went round the hides. We picked up on singing Savi’s and

Reed Warblers, while Purple Herons and Little Bitterns flew round and teased us from the reed edge. Over the

water Gull-billed Terns went back and forth with three Black Terns, while Western (Purple) Swamphen crashed

around in the reeds. As the sun came out, a column of vultures took to the air while a Great Bustard flew below.

En route to the main road we were lucky enough to pick up a Penduline Tit in the bushes. At the last hide we

saw all three egret species on the pool with lots of Black-winged Stilts, whilst across the way a very nice Red-

crested Pochard was sat.

We dragged ourselves away to continue on towards the mountains. Moving through the Oak dehesa, we stopped

at the Rio Tieter where two Hobby flew overhead and small numbers of Iberian Wall Lizards scurried along the

wall.

Back on the road, we wound our way up the mountain and over the top, driving on to our final destination, the

Milano Real. A Wildcat was seen on the hillside. After a good meal we retired to our beds.

Day 6 Monday 1st May

Hoyas del Espino; Paradore; Bonelli’s Wood; Lower Paradore

The day started with a short walk on the village edge before breakfast, which turned up a few things such as Tree

Sparrow, Iberian Green Woodpecker and Firecrest.

After breakfast we called at the Paradore, which was quiet, so we moved on to Bonelli’s Wood which, as always,

lived up to its name with lots of Bonelli’s Warblers. Also Golden Orioles were singing in the woods as we walked

down the track. Several fritillary and blue butterfly species danced up and down the track edge, and we were

joined by Spanish Festoon. In the edges of the track the peonies were just starting to come into flower, along

with White Asphodel and Spanish Bluebell. Moving round, we came across a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker’s nest

with the birds coming and going. Walking back towards the vehicle, we found Crossbill in the broad-leaved trees.

We had our picnic lunch before heading to the other side of the wood, where we found more Crossbills coming

down to the water. As we pulled up we had our first views of the carpet of Pasqueflowers, while a nest box by

the vehicle held Crested Tit. Also Iberian Pied Flycatcher and Tree Pipit were moving around.

We dragged ourselves away and headed to Lower Paradore, where we found Rock Narcissus and enjoyed a

rather obliging Red Squirrel. After another great walk in the forest, we headed back to the hotel.

Day 7 Tuesday 2nd May

Paradore; Platafoma road; Lower Paradore; Plateau Forma

We had an early start with a trip to Paradore. We spotted Citril Finch, Wryneck was calling, and we saw Iberian

Hare, Red Squirrel and Fox.

After breakfast we headed out, stopping on the lower tracks through the woods for a walk where we

encountered Crested Tit, Short-toed and Eurasian Treecreepers, and a few Iberian Wall Lizards. Moving on

slowly we came across Spanish (Yellow) Wagtail in the meadows.

Finally we reached the Plateau Forma car park. We set off up the mountain, spotting Common Rock Thrush and

Ortolan and Rock Buntings. Slightly higher we saw Black-eared Wheatear and Water Pipit. On reaching the first

proper layer of scrub we found Bluethroat as well as several distant Spanish Ibex and the stunning Schreiber’s

Lizard.

Carrying on to the other side of the plateau, to the falls, we obtained even better views of Ibex at quite close

quarters. After a while we headed back down for a late lunch, with Dipper whizzing back and forth on the

stream.

After lunch we headed back down the mountain, stopping for Ortolan Bunting and a hard-to-see Wolf Spider

hiding in the entrance to his burrow. After this we stopped for a well-earned cup of coffee and ice cream.

We finished the day with a drive and a walk along one of the trails, before heading back to the hotel for our

dinner.

Day 8 Wednesday 3rd May

Hoyas del Espino to Madrid; fly to Heathrow

Rock Sparrow started the day for some before breakfast. We loaded the vehicle and headed off, stopping at the

Paradore where Crested Tit and Black Redstart put in an appearance. We then headed along the road back to

Madrid. Along the way we saw White Stork, Griffon Vulture, Booted Eagle and a Golden Eagle to finish.

On reaching Madrid airport we caught a flight back to Heathrow and home.
