PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” The above is a quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt and it’s as valid today as it was when he said it. What gives me hope for a “progressive” future are groups like the Southern Peninsula VIEW Club where I believe we are making a real impact in the lives of children who live in poverty through The Smith Family Learning for Life program. We currently sponsor five children which is an amazing feat considering it feels as if we have just found our “sea” legs. Fundraising efforts like the amazing Sausage Sizzle that was held on the day after the Grand Final are what makes sponsoring five children possible so I would like to thank all of you that helped prep, cook, serve or clean up, spearheaded by our wonderful program officers Faye and Mandy. On the topic of programs, I was sitting in our committee meeting last Thursday just so excited by all we have going on and what we are planning to do in the future. In the next six months we have Christmas Lunch, our AGM and of course our first Birthday to celebrate. Since so many have either loved the series or the movie we are having a “Downton Abbey” theme for our first Birthday, please see more details below. Sub committees are small working groups that are formed, in our case we are looking at forming a few sub committees, one committee is required to work on a large event that we are planning for 2020, which is hosting Jennifer Mann who is one of the nation’s rare specialists in forensic facial reconstruction. A talk by Jennifer followed by Afternoon Tea is to be held in the second half of 2020, if you would like to be involved in the planning of this event please let one of the committee members know. Natalie MEETINGS AND EVENTS September Meeting Our guest speaker this month was Susan Reynoldson, Community Project Manager, Mornington Peninsula Shire, who spoke about the growth of Men’s Sheds on the Peninsula together with two members of the Rosebud Men’s Shed. They spoke about the benefit to men’s health and well-being by giving them a purpose and somewhere to meet other like-minded men and try new skills or use their existing skills on project work and other community activities. Men’s Sheds started in Australia over 20 years ago and there are in excess of 1000 Australia-wide. The movement has expanded overseas to UK, Ireland, Canada, United States, Finland and Greece. We were encouraged to pass on this information to our husbands or partners.

CLUB NEWS & ACTIVITIES

Library Bags and Stationery We have again been asked if we can help in the sewing of 80 Library Bags for Preppies, together with stationery items, to be delivered to the VIEW Club Frankston Hub in January. Sue Purnell will provide more information at our October and November meetings.

Happy October Birthday to: Claire Adams Helen Charge Janet May Sue Toleman Elaine Wallbridge

Small Change The small change (5 & 10 cent pieces) that we tend to collect in our day to day travels often weigh down our wallets, bag them up, bring them along to our meeting and pop them in a special money box just for that purpose. Let’s see how much this passive fundraising can produce for The Smith Family. At the September meeting we totalled $43.50 in small change!

Trading Table Our trading table has been very successful in raising money. We raised over $57 at our September meeting. Thank you, ladies. If you have any used items in good condition, eg jewellery, books, DVD’s, household goods and new handcraft items, you would like to bring along to donate for sale at our next meeting, they would be much appreciated. Our lovely Tricia will manage the table again this month. If your items do not sell, however, we do ask that you collect them at the end of the meeting.

Book Club We meet on the 3rd Friday of each month at 10am at Seawinds Community Hub, Capel Sound, this month Friday 18th October and book is “The Scape Goat” by Daphne du Maurier. If there is sufficient interest a second club of 10 participants may be formed. Any members interested in forming a second book club should contact Faye Burnham via email [email protected]. The cost is $150 per year per club ($15 per person) paid up front.

Connect @ Coffee – January 7th and 21st On the 1st and 3rd Tuesday morning each month, we will have get-togethers for friendship and sharing which will happen through 2020. A chance for members to get to know other and try out different local cafes, beginning at Blue Mini Café, Boneo Road, Rosebud (2 Colchester Road), to avoid summer crowds at beachside venues. More to follow.
