The amount of household debt

Canadians have accumulated seems

to be making daily news lately. Reports

that the average Canadian household

now owes $1.64 for every dollar of

income means it may be time to

reevaluate our budget strategies.

If you real estate strategy does not

take into consideration the fact that

interest rates will eventually begin to

rise and your debt load may increase

a lot faster than your income, you’re

could be in for a bumpy ride.

A good fi nancial advisor can help

you fi gure out solid a budget strategy,

including how much you spend on

housing. While money may become

even cheaper to borrow in Canada, it

should not encourage you to invest or

rent a home that you simply cannot

a  ord, should conditions change. The

fundamental old-school practice is,

save as much as you can, avoid debt

unless absolutely necessary, and pay

debt o  as fast as you can.

Old news yes, but excellent advice.

Living in tourist town

Lundy’s Lane

NO LONGER THE VEGAS-LIKE STRIP

of motels and wedding chapels it

became later in the 20th century,

Lundy’s Lane is now one of the

fastest-growing communities in the

city of Niagara Falls. Beginning at

Beaverdams Road and the QEW in

the north down to McLeod Road, and

currently extending from Beechwood

Road in the west to Drummond Road.

On July 25, 1814, Lundy’s Lane was

the scene of the bloodiest battle of

the War of 1812, and the area was

declared a National Historic Site in

1936. Heroine Laura Secord and her

husband, Captain James Secord, are

buried at Drummond Hill.

Close enough to Stanley Avenue

and all the Falls attractions to ensure

the kids are never bored, Lundy’s Lane

is still far enough removed to feel like

a regular Ontario town.

Lundy’s Lane – and Niagara Falls in

general – is home to a fairly diverse

population.

Extremely convenient to the QEW,

Lundy’s Lane is a great location

for those commuting to work in

Hamilton, Toronto, or the GTA. It’s

also very easy to reach other parts

of Niagara, as Lundy’s Lane itself is

also Highway 20. The local WeGO

Niagara Transit System connects the

neighbourhood to all the busiest parts

of town.

Your tolerance for tourists will

certainly be tested living here.

If you’re not comfortable giving

directions, or getting out of the

way of a picture, you might want to

consider a quieter neighbourhood.

Other than that, this area, with its mix

of well-maintained older homes and

shiny new housing developments,

plentiful parks and schools, and

myriad of entertainment options at

your very doorstep.

Lundy’s Lane

NO LONGER THE VEGAS-LIKE STRIP

of motels and wedding chapels it

became later in the 20th century,

Lundy’s Lane is now one of the

fastest-growing communities in the

city of Niagara Falls. Beginning at

Beaverdams Road and the QEW in

the north down to McLeod Road, and

currently extending from Beechwood

Road in the west to Drummond Road.

On July 25, 1814, Lundy’s Lane was

the scene of the bloodiest battle of

the War of 1812, and the area was

declared a National Historic Site in

1936. Heroine Laura Secord and her

husband, Captain James Secord, are

buried at Drummond Hill.

Close enough to Stanley Avenue

and all the Falls attractions to ensure

the kids are never bored, Lundy’s Lane

is still far enough removed to feel like

a regular Ontario town.

Lundy’s Lane – and Niagara Falls in

general – is home to a fairly diverse

population.

Extremely convenient to the QEW,

Lundy’s Lane is a great location

for those commuting to work in

Hamilton, Toronto, or the GTA. It’s

also very easy to reach other parts

of Niagara, as Lundy’s Lane itself is

also Highway 20. The local WeGO

Niagara Transit System connects the

neighbourhood to all the busiest parts

of town.

Your tolerance for tourists will

certainly be tested living here.

If you’re not comfortable giving

directions, or getting out of the

way of a picture, you might want to

consider a quieter neighbourhood.

Other than that, this area, with its mix

of well-maintained older homes and

shiny new housing developments,

plentiful parks and schools, and

myriad of entertainment options at

your very doorstep.

MY APARTMENT IS A nonstop question zone. I have very limited space, yet

still enough space to constantly be asking myself “Why did I buy this? And

this? And that!” I’ll admit, when I moved into my fi rst apartment I got a little

excited and, despite budget restraintes (zero budget), I went a little crazy

with what I considered investments.

It’s not that all the items in my apartment are totally useless. It just took me

some time to fi gure out they don’t all fi t with my kind of lifestyle. Still, I like

to think I’m not the only one to blame. Seriously, no one could have warned

me not to buy any of these seven ridiculous items?

SOUND SYSTEM: Besides the fact I would actually like to be on good terms

with my neighbours, a sound system is just not at all necessary for my tiny

apartment. Let’s face it, the sound from my iPhone speakers reach from the

kitchen to my bathroom just fi ne.

ELEPTICAL: Everyone who owns a piece of exercise equipment knows they

don’t use it half as much as they should. Then there’s the fact I’m constantly

bumping into it when I get out of bed in the morning.

KING SIZE BED: About 2/3 of the furniture I assembled from IKEA seemed

a lot smaller online then in my actual rental. Now my bedroom looks like it

could belong to Shrek.

LUXURY KITCHEN APPLIANCES: Kitchen appliances like a blender, Vitamix,

and KitchenAid, I consider a luxury because you have to have the luxury of

having a decent amount of counter and cupboard space to be able to use

and store any of these items. Do you know how many di� erent produces go

into a Martha Stewart smoothie?

DECORATIVE PILLOWS: How many pillows can you fi t onto one sofa?

The answer is a lot! The pillows look great. The only thing is I’m constantly

looking for space to place all these pillows when it comes the time to sit on

the only couch in my apartment. If you haven’t guessed yet - it happens a lot.

LOUNGE CHAIR: Summertime is so short. You better believe I invested in

a state-of-the-art lounge chair to make the most of my balcony. The only

thing is, the lounge chair is now the only thing that fi ts on my balcony. Any

suggestions on where to store a lounge chair now that it’s winter?

VACCUM CLEANER: I really had the best intentions to keep my rental as

clean as possible when I moved in. Of course, that meant I had to invest

in the right cleaning appliances. The thing is when you have a small space,

ends up your cutting edge vaccum cleaner doesn’t fi t under any of the

funiture and appliances which take up like 90 percent of your space. Just

one more 12 pound item for me to store.

Now, I wonder how much I can sell these items on Kijiji for...

our bedrooms feel like sanctuaries

becomes so much more important.

The bedroom is such an easy place to

overlook – and in my experience, it’s

often the last place busy parents will

invest time and money. To ensure you

get the best sleep possible, here are

some essential steps to creating the

best sleep retreat.

1. Get the best mattress you can a� ord

We spend a third of our day

sleeping, so your mattress is a

product that is absolutely worth

investing in! While it might be scary

to look at a high-ticket price on a

premium mattress, remember that

a good mattress can last anywhere

from fi ve to 10 years or longer. So

a $2500 mattress amortized over

this length of time ends up costing

around the same price as your daily

cup of co� ee. And do ensure you

try before you by, don’t be shy to lie

down and toss and turn in the store

to make sure it’s a perfect fi t.

2. Keep it dark

Keeping a room dark plays a huge

impact on quality of sleep for both

adults and children. Before going

to bed, put lights on a dimmer (an

easy change an electrician can do

if you don’t have them currently or

an adaptor you can plug your lamp

into) to mentally prepare your body

for rest. Then ensure you have black

out window coverings for the best

light fastness. In children’s rooms

especially, I love using side channels

that a company like Budget Blinds can

install to keep light out from the small

gaps that typically occur on the sides

of roller shades.

3. Keep it dramatic

I love creating cozy bedrooms. In

my space I used a deep indigo blue

called Krimson Lake by CIL Paints.

It is absolutely a myth that dark

colours are inappropriate for small

spaces – in a small space dark paint

can make a room feel cozy, dramatic

and inviting. I took the drama one

step further by installing applied

moulding from Metrie’s Very Square

collection. Applied moulding painted

out the same colour as the walls is

a modern take on a more traditional

architectural application.

4. Keep it clean

Commit to keeping the bedroom

the cleanest room in the house. At

the end of a chaotic day, who wants

to return to chaos? Commit to using

laundry hampers, to putting clean

laundry away immediately, and to

making the bed daily. Making the bed,

if you don’t do so already, is a really

simple task that will yield huge wins

and build momentum for keeping the

rest of the room tidy as well.

5. Make it smell good

I use an essential oil di� user in the

bedroom in the morning to get me

energized and in the evening to get

my body ready for sleep. A few drops

of lavender essential oil di� used in

the room makes everything smell

good and can do wonders to calm

the nerves and aid in relaxation. For

further help getting the best sleep try

an herbal supplement like Pascofl air’s

aid in restlessness. And absolutely

remember to not let the bedroom

become a dumping ground for mess.

HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS such as tree trimming,

present wrapping and hanging lights help get us in the

holiday spirit and are lots of fun. But thoughtful packing

of seasonal decorations and materials at the end of the

holidays for the next year, can keep the fu in what is for

some, a stressful time.

In other words, it pays to plan, even 12 months ahead.

Careful packing and organization prevents damage and

breakage, and ensures you can fi nd everything next year.

It is worth taking the extra time to organize and preserve

your decorations for next year.

Here are some tips from Two Men and a Truck to keep

in mind while packing away holiday decorations:

DELICATE ITEMS

• Wrap breakables in paper or bubble wrap. Do not use

newspaper - the print may wear o� on ornaments.

Use tissue or packing paper. Instead of throwing

away used paper or junk mail, run it through a paper

shredder, it makes great packing fi ller.

• Decorations that contain photographs or food should

be sealed in an air tight bag to keep them safe. Sealing

photos preserves them and the scent from any food

item will attract insects or mice where ever they are

stored.

• Boxes with dividers are best to pack ornaments in.

There are cardboard boxes made especially for fragile

items. They come with adjustable inserts that forms

individual cells for delicate items. These “Dish Pack”

boxes are very popular at all our Two Men and a Truck

branches

• Keep extra hangers, hooks and ornament parts in a

labeled bag or box.

LIGHTS

• To prevent tangles, wrap lights around empty gift

wrapping paper tubes.

• Leave the plug accessible by taping the ends of the

light strands to the end of the tube. Next year you can

quickly test the lights before unwinding them.

• Store colored lights in a dark place to prevent fading

–- especially blues, greens and purples.

WRAPPING PAPER

• Hanging garment bags provides good storage for

wrapping paper rolls. Use outside pockets for gift tags,

cards and tissue paper.

• To protect used rolls of paper, cut an empty wrapping

paper tube from end to end and slide it over the roll.

• Ribbons and bows can be saved and reused, pack

loosely so they keep their shape.

Some Other Considerations

• Wrap holiday candles individually in cellophane and

store in a cool place so they do not melt together.

• Pack an “open fi rst” box. Place the decorations you

use fi rst in here with essentials such as extension

cords.

• Use a “Wardrobe Box” to hang and store seasonal

clothing that you only wear twice a year like that

special snowman sweater from your mother-in-law

or that fl ashing Christmas tie. This way you can fi nd it,

wear it, and store it away on a hanger easily.

• If you haven’t used a decoration in a few years donate

it. If it is damaged, get rid of it.

• Take special care if you are storing your items in a

damp area like your basement. Don’t store boxes near

sources of heat and moisture.

• The most important tip is to label every box. The more

detailed the description, the easier it will be to fi nd

things. Use di� erent colors to distinguish di� erent

holidays. For example, use orange for Halloween,

brown for Thanksgiving, and red or green for

Christmas.

• Take a digital photo of special care items like snow

globes or wreaths, print them o� on regular paper and

tape the photo to the outside of the box as an easy

description of what’s inside.
