From the EditorYou will be amazed and delighted at the colourful displays of tulip bulbs blooming, for the annual Tulip Time Festival. The Southern Highlands celebrates Tulip Time with a host of activities and there is so much to do that your feet will barely touch the ground.

Look forward to the following events; Camden will hold its annual, two-week festival of family fun and entertainment and as well, Campbelltown City will hold the annual Fisher’s Ghost Street Parade as part of the Fisher’s Ghost Festival. Highlights include, fun for kids, carnival rides, fireworks and more!

During the annual Food and Wine Festival you can enjoy not only wines, but also local produce and culinary demonstrations from local chefs. There will be art and craft displays as well as live entertainment. Bowral will also host the inaugural Home and Garden Show early in September, showcasing all you fancy for your home and garden in the one venue

and in October enjoy local culinary delights during the Bowral Long Lunch.

More for the garden enthusiast; Bundanoon will hold its annual Garden Ramble and the annual Goulburn Lilac Festival is one for the diary; lots of fun, music, dance, food and activities will make this a must attend festival.

In the midst of this festival season in the Highlands, Robertson will offer its Open Gardens event in October. These events will surely please garden lovers and those of you who enjoy a country fair.

To top off this eclectic mix of cultural, floral and food and wine events, the Southern Highlands and surrounds will offer art displays in Goulburn, Wollongong and throughout the Highlands and a Gala concert in Bundanoon.

Festival highlights -30 year relationship Each November, the legendary Festival of Fisher’s Ghost comes alive in Campbelltown, showcasing the city’s community spirit and vibrancy.

Held over 10 days, from 30 October to 9 November, this year will see the return of the festival’s trademark events, together with the giant carnival and Saturday fireworks spectaculars at Bradbury Oval.

There will be a distinct Japanese flavour to this year’s festival, in celebration of the 30 year anniversary of the Campbelltown-Koshigaya Sister City relationship – one of the longest running in Australia.

The annual Street Parade will reflect this important milestone by encouraging participants and spectators to embrace the Japanese theme, as we welcome a delegation of visitors from Koshigaya to enjoy the

festivities that our city has come to know and love.

This year’s Street Fair will be a hive of activity, with a host of street stalls boasting everything from tasty treats to must-have homewares, as well as a fun kids zone in Mawson Park featuring the GymBus, a petting zoo and stage entertainment for the whole family.

The festival also features the ever-popular Craft Exhibition, Fun Run, Art Award, Fisher’s Kids and the award-winning Fisher’s Gig – making it one of Australia’s most diverse and longest running community celebrations for people of all ages.

Steeped in tradition, the festival dates back to 1956, and is named after Frederick Fisher – a local farmer who disappeared under suspicious circumstances and whose ghost became a local legend.

The Illawarra Porcelain Artist Society- NSW will hold its annual Exhibition and Sale on 15 & 16 November at The Old CourtHouse, Belmore Basin, Wollongong. Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 9am-4pm. Entry is free.

The Illawarra Society, being only small in number with around 30 active members, is working towards a magnificent display of works for this 25th annual Exhibition.

The aim of the society is to promote excellence in porcelain art through the developement of skills and processes with the spirit of common purpose and friendship. This is achieved through bi-monthly meetings, workshops and art weekends, giving our members the knowledge to develop their skills and enhance their painting. We are fortunate in the Illawarra to have teachers who are recognised at State, Australia and world wide levels.

The exhibition will see a cross section of members artwork, in both traditional and

contemporary styles. This will be a display of radiant, colourful individual designs to whet the appetite of the observer and will be an ideal time to collect that one-off Christmas gift for loved ones.

Hand painted porcelain today reflects traditional and contemporary creations, often of themes inspired by nature, cultures and the artists own interpretation.

As well as a wide range of subjects within the exhibition of artists work, a special section “Orientalism” has inspired many artists to create works from Islamic designs, ancient Chinese blue & white ware and much more. This section has given the artists a range of countries and styles to gather inspiration from such as Japan, Russia, Morocco, Turkey, China, India and Malaysia.

Don’t miss a jam packed Camden Festival Saturday 13 to Sunday 28 September 2014 showcasing the historic Camden region with a two-week program of fun and entertainment for residents and visitors.

Highlights of this fortnight-long extravaganza include the ultimate outdoor movie event ‘Cinema Under the Stars’ at the Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan on Saturday 13 September. Frozen will start at 6.15pm with Saving Mr Banks following at 8pm. On the night popcorn, fairy floss, BBQ, gozleme, coffee and ice cream will all be available for purchase to help create the perfect movie experience.

Picnic in the Park – High Tea and Garden Showcase will return for its second year set in the iconic Macarthur Park on Sunday 14 September. Enjoy a variety of high tea and picnic themed stalls, children’s activities such as floral crown making, pot plant painting as well as a jumping castle, face painting and an animal farm. Camden Council will also be conducting their annual native plant giveaway with live entertainment and roving performers also present.

Curry Reserve will be transformed into a children’s wonderland on Wednesday 17 September as Kids Fun Day takes centre-stage with roving entertainment, performers, face painting, clowns, animal farm and so much more!

‘Taste’ – Food, Wine & Music Festival, held at the beautiful and unique Camden Town Farm on Sunday 28 September is the perfect way to end Camden Festival. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample some of the finest food and wine in NSW as well as cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, jumping castles, face painting and more!

2014 will also see the introduction of a new event, a Youth Movie Night at United Cinemas, Narellan with subsidised tickets on offer. The movie is still to be confirmed but will take place on Thursday 25 September.

The annual Camden Festival kicks off on Saturday 13 September and continues for two fun filled weeks. Some of the highlights include the Cinema under the Stars, Kids Fun Day, Twilight Festival and more. With such a variety of events, the Festival has something for everyone.

On Sunday 14 September head over to Macarthur Park for the annual Picnic in the Park – High Tea and Garden Showcase. Now celebrating its second anniversary, this event will feature a variety of children’s activities, live entertainment, garden workshops and displays, as well as picnic themed food stalls.

The annual Twilight Markets are being held at the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living on Friday 19 September. Come along and pick up fresh local produce, browse the food stalls and sit back and enjoy the entertainment.

Your GardenAt 416 hectares, there is so much to discover at Australia’s largest Botanic Garden. Enjoy stunning Australian plant displays, rolling hills, ornamental lakes and the amazing views from Sundial Hill. The new scientific research facility, the Australian PlantBank, is open weekdays from 10 am until 4 pm.

Free guided tours of the Garden leave most days from the Visitor Centre.

Gledswood Family Fun Day is on at Gledswood Homestead and Winery on Sunday 12 October. There will be plenty of kid’s activities including pony rides, jumping castles, fairy floss, face painting and more. Adults can enjoy boutique Australian wine and signature craft beer as well as the 73rd Regiment on parade.

Also on Sunday 12 October is the Macarthur Progressive Wine Luncheon. Three of Macarthur’s wineries – Fussy Grape, Trattoria La Vigna and Razorback Ridge – have grouped together to offer a new self-drive, three-course, progressive lunch. The day will begin at 11.30 with canapés at Fussy Grape, followed by the main course at Trattoria La Vigna and dessert at Razorback Ridge. Wine tasting and an address

by the winemakers will also be offered at each vineyard. Book early to avoid disappointment.

On again is the popular Bi-Annual Oil, Steam and Kerosene Field Weekend at the Campbelltown Steam and Machinery Museum. Held over the weekend of 18 and 19 October, the event features wagon rides, 2td gauge railway rides, tractor plowing, antique earthmovers, military vehicles, steam threshing, engine displays, vintage cars, food stalls and much more.

Concluding the month is the Annual Festival of Fisher’s Ghost. The Festival begins on Friday 31 October and continues until Sunday 9 November. Highlights include the prestigious Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, annual street parade, a street fair, carnival rides, fireworks, Fisher’s Kids, Fisher’s Gig, fun runs and more!

Wollondilly

Wollondilly, is situated on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures in an area that relies on dairying and mixed farming. It takes in Bargo in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north, Yerranderie Ghost Town and the Burragorang Valley to the west.

Historic Picton was originally called Stonequarry and was in fact a private town in the early 19C. It has a number of notable historic sites; Vault Hill, owned by an early settler Henry Antill, the old courthouse, built in 1864, a Victorian classical stone post office with an impressive clock tower, dating from 1892, the CBC Bank (now the National Australia Bank) built in 1885, St Mark’s Anglican Church, and Larkin Cottage, one of the oldest surviving buildings in town.

Take in the breathtaking views of the Burragorang Valley, the waters of which are

dammed by Warragamba Dam or picnic and BBQ at the Avon, Cordeaux or Nepean Dams.

Among the attractions in Wollondilly are Wirrimbirra, a local wildlife sanctuary and Trainworks, home of Australia’s oldest and largest railway museum.

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, which is set in 200 acres of bushland, is a National Trust (NSW) property and is located between Bargo and Tahmoor. There are native animals, a native plant nursery, picnic tables and a Gift Shop.

Trainworks in Thirlmere is a magical place to visit for the enthusiast and the young at heart. Step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865. As well, there is an exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

The eight private gardens will showcase their diversity, ranging from small acreages to small town blocks.

Not only are the gardens superb, but the garden owners themselves are very interesting people, so it will be a pleasure to engage them in conversation about their many interests which encompass travelling, painting, collecting classic cars and running and participating in voluntary organisations. In one garden there will be a display of Austin Healey cars including a 1963 Sebring works car.

In a separate garden from the ramble, Arts Bundanoon will present an afternoon concert featuring the Tecchler String Quartet. the concert there will be a Garden Market in the Bundanoon Hall and a working display of old farm equipment. A Night in Buenos Aires

On September the 20th, for the annual Arts Bundanoon Gala Concert, the group “Tangalo” will perform at this year’s Gala Concert, transporting the audience to another place, another culture – eastern South America: Uruguay and Argentina. In the nineteenth century, both had major seaboard cities on the Rio de la Plata, large immigrant populations and both make claim to the tango. Buenos Aires is unimaginable without it.

The tango was not at first a “nice” dance. Time engenders acceptance. As with the salacious sarabande and then the shameless waltz, so the alarming and caressingly close contact tango insinuated itself into European society. Did they tango in the boarding houses of

Bundanoon? Gradually the dance finally reached “high society” and popular culture. Piazzolla, now accepted

as a classical composer, took the tango from there and gave it new partners, from jazz and the Baroque.

Many will know that the artists from the popular Bundanoon Tango Weekend or from Bundanoon’s Piano at 10 series. The members of Tangalo - three women and two men - have received a grant from the Argentinian Government to study there next year. They are young artists, classically trained musicians of exceptional standard.

Corbett Gardens 16 – 28 September 2014 Tulip Time celebrates its 54th year as one of Australia’s leading flora events, and one of the only remaining charity based flora festivals in NSW. Spanning over 2 weeks the Festival has something for everyone no matter what the age. This year will also see Corbett Gardens celebrating its official opening 100 years ago, with a number of garden beds specifically planted to celebrate this centenary milestone.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT are this year’s official Tulip Time charity partner, together with well known and loved comedian (and local Southern Highlands resident), Anthony Ackroyd as the 2014 Tulip Time Ambassador. Anthony said “I am very excited to be supporting Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and Tulip Time. The charity relies on the public’s support

to provide its services free of charge so I’m very eager to reach that $30,000 target if not more, to help train even more guide dogs.”

This charity partnership will allow Guide Dogs NSW/ACT to broaden their reach and message, whilst also being a valuable fundraising event. Funds raised by the Guide Dogs NSW/ACT during Tulip Time will be apportioned back to the local Wingecarribee community to fund much needed initiatives and programs.

The Festival in Corbett Gardens runs across 13 days with an exciting program of events and activities planned, all underpinned with the key messaging of “A Colourful Life” coupled with the central color theme of yellow which will adorn the streets, businesses and gardens during this year’s festival.

The Arts Festival is an annual month long event held each November which celebrates the work of our local community of artists and makers alongside internationally acclaimed talent.

The Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail, a once a year opportunity to see beyond the studio door of some of our local artists, is on again over the first two weekends of November. The Art Studio Trail is the feature event of the Southern Highlands Arts Festival, a time to celebrate and enjoy all of the creative opportunities in the region – galleries, exhibitions, music, theatre, arts shopping and workshops.

Moss Vale & BerrimaMoss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions and only a short drive away.

The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes.

Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture.

The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers.

Moss Vale holds a large part of the Southern Highlands Industry - as well as being a minor centre for agriculture, many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.

Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is a ‘must visit’ with displays of flowers and shrubs in Spring and Autumn.

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it.

Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas.

You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town.

Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW.

By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust.

The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are still two impressive sandstone buildings which every visitor must see. Until a few years ago the gaol was still used as a prison.

Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.

'MUST SEE' ATTRACTIONS in and around the Southern Highlands


BDCU Childrens Foundation was established in 2005 to support the health and wellbeing of local children at Bowral Hospital. Its focus was on refurbishing the Childrens Ward at the Hospital that was in a poor state of repair and with large support from the community the Foundation raised $500,000 to provide equipment.

The Foundation has more recently embarked on raising funds for local youth mental health and more specifically the employment of a mental health nurse who works from Bowral Hospital but is a conduit between the community and local health professionals. That role has now been filled on a 12 month contract with the incumbent commencing duties a month ago.

It is our intention to continue our fundraising efforts to ensure the long term viability of the position and to be able to sustain the position financially. Following the success of last year’s Cook Off Competition and Bowral Long Lunch we have launched another series of events to support our fundraising.

This year’s Long Lunch is part of the Sydney Morning Herald’s GOOD FOOD MONTH, with locals donating time and effort to ensure another event full of energy and goodwill.

RobertsonRobertson is the lushest of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market.

Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background.

Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies.

Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside.

The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular

hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe.

The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

Robertson is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. The town is within easy reach of the surrounding towns of Berrima, Bowral, Bundanoon, Fitzroy Falls, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Sutton Forest, all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through the unique little shops and galleries.

Robertson Springtime Open Gardens will be held on the weekend of October 11th and 12th with eight beautiful gardens open to the public, six large gardens in the village and two large country gardens with amazing views of the beautiful Robertson countryside.

Four of the gardens are new this year, all with great features on gardening in a cold climate, including wonderful deciduous trees, shrubs and hedging, with one garden featuring some outstanding features of Yarrawa remnant rainforest. One of the gardens from last year demonstrates the amazing use of large pots in the design of the garden.

The gardens will open from 9.30am to 4.00pm on both days. Maps and tickets will be available at the CTC (Community Technology Centre), in

the main street opposite Murray Tractors, Robertson. Tickets, valid for both days, cost $5 per garden, $20 for all gardens, and $15 concession. Tickets can also be purchased at each garden.

Picnic in the Robertson Heritage Railway grounds where there will be Waratah plants and blooms for sale and the Fettler’s Shed Gallery and Museum will be open.

The Robertson Garden Club will also hold a monster plant stall where people can buy many of the plants seen in the gardens. Other attractions will include a botanical art display at the Light Horse Gallery, a craft exhibition at the Robertson Village Woodworks and the local market on Sunday. The CTC will be holding an exhibition of a local artist’s work. Shop at the collectables stalls at the Cheese factory and have lunch and morning tea at Robertson’s great cafes. Proceeds from the open gardens will go to the Robertson Show Society, Robertson CTC and the Robertson Volunteer Fire Brigade

Fitzroy Falls, in Morton National Park, offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, wildflowers, native animals, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are all good reasons for visitors to include this area in a tour of the Southern Highlands.

There are several walks to choose from: a timber boardwalk to the falls or a 7km walk into a rainforest gully.

It’s Lilac time in Goulburn

On Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend on the 4 October and 5 October, Goulburn, Australia’s oldest inland city, celebrates its 63rd Lilac City Festival. The Festival is the longest continuous running Festival in New South Wales.

As Goulburn welcomes Spring, most of the events are based around Belmore Park, in the centre of town.

For two days there is an abundance of events and entertainment for adults and children. The official opening at Belmore Park is on Saturday 4 October at 1.30pm where presentation of the citizen and achiever awards and festival baby will be announced and the prizes for the garden competition will be awarded followed by an auction.
