General Tips for Success!Make sure to read all instructions for each assignment and task! Just like in school, we want our students to be self learners and engage in topics that will excel them to new knowledge, this only happens if we encourage our students to read all of the instructions prior to starting a task or assignment. We notice, as educators that once this happens, there are less questions. Teachers are expert scaffolders, their instructions are detailed and explicit to ensure student success. Push your child to read all the instructions prior to starting a task!
When in doubt, encourage your student to ask their teacher. When we all work together, the children will benefit.
Helpful Tips for Parents and Guardians - Social StudiesBelieve that your child can be successful in SS:
● Most of previous suggestions from other content areas also apply to Social Studies.● Make your Social Studies classwork a routine.● Contact your Teacher!● Ensure that you are completing tasks that will be put into Skyward.● Be Flexible● We are living in a historic moment in World/US History, with major civic implications. Talk with
your children about the current events going on and how this may be impactful to the future!
Helpful Tips for Parents and Guardians - MathBelieve that your child can be successful in math because they can!
● Establish a routine/schedule. ○ 20 minutes a day for practice is better than nothing.
● Talk about math in a positive way!○ Encourage persistence. Some problems take time to solve.○ Encourage your child to experiment with different approaches that make sense to them. Often
times, there’s more than one way to solve a math problem (drawing a picture, making lists, etc.)● Ask questions:
○ Why did you…?○ What can you do next?○ Do you see any patterns?○ Does the answer make sense?○ How do you know…?○ These questions help encourage thinking about math.
● Communicate with teachers. We are here to help.
Helpful Tips for Parents and Guardians - ScienceBelieve that your child can be successful in Science:
● Establish a Routine/Schedule○ Do Science 1st... just kidding, try to work on certain subjects on certain days/certain times each day,
if possible.● Create a Checklist
○ List “Must Do” assignments/tasks by due date. Cross off completed tasks. Double-check for incomplete tasks.
● Encourage Appropriate Pacing○ Prioritize checklist tasks (most difficult tasks/subjects first, due soon vs due later, etc.), but don’t rush
thru assignments. Take breaks as needed (20-20-20 Rule) or work ahead, if possible.● Be Proactive
○ Contact teachers during office hours with any questions or concerns. Communication is essential!● Celebrate Success!
○ Reward students for timeliness/completion of assignments, sharing resources appropriately with siblings, etc. (Tangible Rewards, Verbal & Non-Verbal Praise)
Helpful Tips for Parents and Guardians - ELABelieve that your child can be successful in ELA:
● Encourage your child to dedicate 20 - 30 minutes a day for our English Language Arts class.● Students should continue to use the Four Core Reading Strategies - predicting, questioning,
clarifying, summarizing - that good readers use together to comprehend text. ● Have students check their school email, Skyward, and eCampus (All, which is a button on
your portal) weekly for directions, information, assignments, and important updates from your ELA teacher.
● Reach out to your teachers if you have any questions, concerns, or clarifications. ● Focus on the graded, “must do” assignments first every week.● Encourage him/her to create a checklist or schedule for the day and check off completed
assignments. ● I know this sounds simple, but don’t forget to breathe.
Helpful Tips for Parents and Guardians - ElectivesBelieve that your child can be successful in all subjects:
● Ask your child what fun activities he/she is doing for Elective Classes!● Ensure that your child is completing the one graded assignment per week for each Elective.● Encourage your child to share during dinner time the articles they are reading in Elective
Classes.● Encourage your child to stay physically active every day and practice some activities from their
PE, JROTC and Dance classes.● Encourage your child to practice new skills like painting, writing, drawing, puzzles, or even
making music! Why not?● Challenge your child to practice a foreign language! make fun games at home and memorize
new words and useful phrases in a language they are learning at school.● Encourage your child to practice the 7 Habits at home.● Encourage your child to keep learning from all content areas and practice balance! ● Soul-Mind and Body
