SHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to: • Organize, develop and build a dynamic group of Alumni. • Promote the success of SHS, its students and faculty through a variety of events, projects and scholarships.

The 2010 Hall of Fame and the Packer Sports Greats Hall of Fame last fall were outstanding events which honored our inspiring alumni. Nominate candidates using forms in this issue for these honors in the future.

The “Jewels & Tools” Scholarship Fund-raiser was full of surprises and fun this year. We were thrilled that George Dare, an award-winning Las Vegas entertainer, sing-er, song writer and music producer--as well as a 1971 SHS grad--agreed to be our Mas-ter of Ceremonies for the event. He kept the place hopping and engaged our guests in the show. Also, at the eleventh hour we received word from NASA that Nebraska’s astronaut, Clayton Anderson, would be our guest speaker! His film and narrative were fascinating and very entertaining. His mother, Alice Joaness Anderson-1947 died last year and he said he was so glad to finally meet the SHS people who meant so much to her. What a star-filled night it was and what a great cause.

Upcoming events include our 16th Annual Bowling Tournament and Spaghetti Din-ner both on Saturday, March 26. The 2011 Poker Run will be held on Saturday, May 14 with a party after the Run. The inaugural All-School Dance date is Friday, July 22. (Order your tickets early as we ex-pect a sell-out!) Also, sign up for our Golf Tournament on Sunday, July 24. Details of these fun events are on flyers and reser-vation forms which are in this TOOTER. We need workers for each of these events to help with registration, set up, serving, prize awards, selling tickets for prizes and many other duties. If you have time to volunteer for any of these events, or want to buy tickets or sign up to participate, please let us know. We need your attendance and support and want you to enjoy these events as much as we do.

Remember that we have an adjacent bay next to our office to rent for showers, family reunions, card parties, birthday and holiday parties, etc. Call the office to book your party early. Stop in to see the space when

you are in the neighborhood, but call first to be sure the office is open.

We always need your help to mail TOOT-ERS to our 20,000 plus alumni list. Volunteers tab and label each issue before mailing while reconnecting with classmates and meeting new alumni. Please call the office to offer any time you can spare. Also, please contact the office if you would like to establish scholarship memorials for your classmates, family or friends; help us fund teacher grants, or provide other financial assistance needed by your school. Most of all send in your membership dues! We are very thankful for your help, as are the students and teachers of SHS.

Please drop us a line or two with informa-tion we can share with your classmates and friends about you and your family so we can publish your news in our AlumNotes section. Send us items for our Sports Corner also. Please continue to share your ideas and encouragement with us as we can’t do it without you. Thank you for your continued support.

Respectfully submitted,Judi (Clark) Koubsky, Secretary

A very proud and dedicated South High grad and our current Alumni Association president, Paul Kracher, is constantly mindful of the accomplishments and need for continuing success of our organization. Paul was instrumental in the founding of the Alumni Association with Dr. Richard Gu-lizia and others. He cites the numerous ac-complishments of this strong alumni group but comments that “we count on our alumni and friends for their donations to keep the Association going.” He adds, “It is not just about one person, but it is team work from all. I am appreciative of the many good-hearted people involved as their hard work and contributions are what make all of our projects a huge success.” Paul emphasizes, “We need involvement from our younger alumni to make sure our organization con-tinues to thrive in the coming years.” Paul’s affiliation with South began as a student, graduating with the Class of 1961. He recalls “having a blast” as a student and fondly remembers his teachers, all the friends he made, the noon lunches and the dances in the gymnasium. After gradua-tion, he said he tried his hand at several jobs and eventually went to work for the Omaha World-Herald. He started at the newspaper in 1964, and 45 years later he is the ma-chine shop supervisor. He married Sharon (Corey) Kracher 38 years ago, and they have three daughters and a grandson.

Paul’s involvement with the Alumni As-sociation started in 1986 at his 25-year class reunion. He agreed to serve on the 30-year reunion committee as chairman. He jokes that he hoped “in five years they would forget, but no such luck!” In planning for the 30th reunion, Paul realized South didn’t have an alumni association and was concerned that alumni were being left out of crucial events like the Partners for South High banquet. He then partnered with Dr. Richard Gulizia (the Association’s Execu-tive Director) to create the Omaha South High School Alumni Association. The group has two original “lofty” goals: raise a $1 million fund to help South students attend college, and create a $2 million fund for an Alumni Foundation to ensure the Association will continue. Paul recalls that those founding members felt that “if the organization could help get South grads into college or trade schools, we would be suc-cessful.” What started as one $500

scholarship has now grown into multiple scholarships totaling upwards of $15,000 a year. Paul states, “We will continue to pursue our goals to assist our SHS students by our efforts and support.” He said the group’s leaders will continue asking alumni and friends for donations, continue applying for grants and continue having fundraising events – all to invest in students’ futures. He cites the following as some of the Alumni Association’s accomplishments:

• The H.P. Smith Sports Complex, which would later become the home field for the Omaha South High girls’ softball team.

• Brown Park and John Stella Field, the old ball field which now sits as a gleaming light in South “O” and is used for boys’ baseball.

• Collin Stadium and Collin Field, the “Gem.” The HOLE is gone and in its place is the pride of all South Omaha. The Collin Stadium is truly a master-piece. This facility is unlike any in the Omaha Public School system. Even though it sits in a HOLE, it stands high in the heart of every person in South Omaha and students of South High School and its alumni.

• Yearly teacher grants which have helped send different clubs to nation-wide learning events, buy shoes for the track team, uniforms, band uni-forms/instruments, and scholarships.

Paul states, “We have accomplished a lot, and as we move forward I feel our goals need to shift from athletics to focus more on academics. We need to help students set their sights high and achieve their goals. We need to provide more assistance to the teachers and students through mentor-

ing programs, programs for which our tax dollars no longer pay. This is where we can make the difference.”

He adds, “The Alumni Association has a significant role in keeping South’s alumni informed through the Alumni TOOTER newsletter as well as with our fundrais-ing events. We will have articles in the TOOTER from students currently in school to inform alumni about what is happening in classrooms. We assist reunion commit-tees by providing class lists and labels to help them plan their reunions and contact their class members. We also continue to honor our alumni with both the Hall of Fame and Packer Greats Sports Hall of Fame banquets. We have events such as golf, bowling, and, this July we will have an entire school dance reunion at the Holiday Inn Central. All alumni and friends are welcome to attend.” Paul cites some of the following projects for this coming year:

• Completing the Sports Greats trophy case expansion;

• Repairing and organizing of all sports trophies;

• Continuing to raise funds for the three “Vizio” kiosk units to be installed in the school and networked together, providing information about alumni inducted into the Halls of Fame and the school’s Buffett Foundation winners.

ALUMNotes1933-Georgina (Kozel) Kiscoan celebrated her 95th birthday on 12-10-10 by attending her church and later enjoying a family din-ner at the Bohemian Café. Happy Birthday to you!

1938-Marie (Nemecek) Vacek is pictured with her husband, Henry-1936, at her 90th birthday celebration at Venice Inn on Saturday, 1-29-11 with family and friends. Happy Birthday!

1944-Ted Golka was a member of the US Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1947 working in the engine room as a member of the “Black Gang” and a lifeboatsman. He married a SHS girl Christine (Harmon) Golka-1947 and they were married almost 60 years before she died of cancer. Thank you for your service to our country and we are sorry for your loss!

1950-Chris Saklar was featured in the OW-H on 1-23-11 as he celebrated his 80th birthday on 1-25. He is a retired Douglas County Deputy Sheriff and Sweet 98 Traf-fic Reporter. Chris is also co-chair of our Bowling Tournament. Happy Birthday, Chris!

1952-Bob and Jan (Willenburg) Urban were married on 10-1-60 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year with their entire family in Branson, Mis-souri. I have four children, six grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.”

1953-Joe and Mary Ann (Straley) Wein-ert were kind enough to buy and donate 1963 and 1965 South High Yearbooks that

they found on E-Bay. Coincidentally, after Mary Ann dropped off the yearbook at the Alumni Office, a 1965 alumni called to see if we knew of anyone who had an extra yearbook or if he could purchase one. All his possessions, including his senior year-book, were lost in the Hurricane Katrina disaster. He wrestled, played football and was part of the Science Club all four years in high school and was so appreciative and choked up when the office called to tell him of Joe and Mary’s yearbook donation. He could not believe it.Editor’s Note: Over the past several years, the Alumni Association has established a waiting list of people who are in need of yearbooks. Some have lost yearbooks through divorce, fires, natural disasters, or simply were not able to afford a yearbook in high school. The Alumni Association would appreciate any yearbook donations. Thank you, Joe and Mary Ann for your generous act of kindness - you made such a difference in the life of a fellow alumnus!

1958-Linda (Strnad) Jensen will appear on the Morning Blend Talk show on KMTV at 9 a.m. on April 25. She will discuss her memoir, THE BOW WOW CHRONICLES, which tells of growing up in Omaha in the 1940s and 1950s with three rough and tum-ble brothers. In a recent visit to Omaha from her home in Pennsylvania, she appeared at bookstores and retirement residences, and spoke to the journalism class at SHS.

1958-Roger and Laurolee “Lori” (Chadonich) Tallman met at SHS and were married on 9-12-60. They celebrated their 50th anniversary last year and reported that they are both retired and love to travel. They both enjoy reading, gardening and researching genealogy. Congratulations!

1960-M. Jean (Hahne) Johnson- A special thank you to the Johnson family for donat-ing a South High beanie, pep rally picture and song sheets. We appreciate donated memorabilia for our archives.

1960-Jeannie (Johnson) Mill writes, “To all those who attended the South High Class of 1960 Fifty Year Reunion the weekend of August 27 and 28, THANK YOU!! DO YOU REMEMBER THE MILITARY BALLS?

This photo is courtesy of Jeanette (Kubin) Fredericks-1956. She very kindly donated to the Alumni Association the military cape and cap that she wore in this photo at the 1956 Military Ball with this explanation.

Her classmate, Jim Melsa-1956, was named Cadet Lieutenant Colonel at the ROTC Military Ball on 2-17-56, serv-ing thereafter as Battalion Commander. Jeanette then became the corps Honorary Colonel. Since the military cape and cap that she wore during the Grand March that evening were going to be replaced the next year, the Army Master Sergeant asked Jea-nette if she would like to keep them. She, of course, did. However, the Army asked her to loan them back to SHS for the 1967 Military Ball. That was the cape and cap’s last usage and they were returned to her promptly after that event.

Jeanette married Dr. Robert Fredericks, a New Yorker, years later and has lived in Morristown, NJ almost 30 years, complet-ing her college courses there. She said that as she looks to her 55-year reunion, she feels it is time “to send this great piece of memorabilia back home where it can evince nostalgia for others.”

Thank you so much for donating your cape and cap to the Alumni Association and sharing its history with us.

1961-Denny Koubsky ended 2010 in style by bowling a 300 game on 12-31-10. He continued the trend into the new year with another perfect game on 1-7-11 in the Fri-day morning men’s league at Mocking-bird Lanes. Congratulations!

1995-Chris Bober wrote that the allure of the Nebraska sand-hills, and the rich outdoor tradition caused him to ac-cept an invitation to be a part of the 2010 Nebraska One Box Pheasant Hunt in Broken Bow, Nebraska. This event raises money for recreational property preservation and youth shooting sports programs and Chris said he is deeply involved in these causes both professionally and philanthropically. His Team Powershots consisted of Team Captain Roger Seefeld, Chad Seefeld, Greg Hellbusch, Mark Olsen, and Chris. On Thursday, November 4, they started with pheasant hunting at Pressey State Wildlife Management Area. The next morning they arose early for a Trap Shoot and Sporting Clay Competition. The following day the hunt began at sunrise. The Powershots had one box (25 shells) to get as many birds as possible by 4 p.m. sharp. The Hunt began as pheasant after pheasant flushed within range so they didn’t have to move to a new loca-tion before exhausting their shells. The team bagged 10 pheasants, taking Third Place in the competition and raising a great deal of money for charity.

Chris said “the event, in its 50th year, was an unbelievable experience for me. The Hunt itself is dedicated to improving the quality of life in Central Nebraska and supporting the creation of wildlife habitats in the area for preservation and recreational hunting/fishing opportunities…”

Chris, congratulations on your team show-ing and thank you for raising money for this worthwhile event!

The two photos above are compliments of Jack Philby/Paul Kracher. Thanks fellows!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE LOTTERY The South High Alumni Association would like to thank everyone who participated in selling the 2010 lottery tickets. Your contributions from the lottery will help provide scholarships to graduating South High seniors. Last year, with your financial help, your Alumni Association awarded over $15,000 in scholarships. We know the economy has brought hard times to many, but we thank you for your gener-ous support.

LETTER FROM A LOTTERY WINNER

Dear Dr. Gulizia and South High Alumni As-sociation Officers,“Thanks very much for pulling my lottery number, which I have to admit was purchased by my wife Pat Roberts-1965. I offered to split the $500 with her, but she declined and I immediately deposited the money in my checking account!

I was a teacher, coach, and administrator in OPS for 29 years until I retired in 2002. The very best years of my career in OPS were spent teaching journalism and English and coaching baseball and football at SHS from 1972-1979. Spending a day at South never felt like a job. Believe it or not, I really looked forward to Christmas break ending so that I could get back to South. The faculty was first-class and the students were, by and large, eager to learn and move ahead. I consider myself fortunate to have taught at South dur-ing what I call “The Glory Years.” (My wife considers the “Glory Years” to have been the 1960s.) Thanks again for making my lottery ticket a winner.”

Friends of SHS

In MemoriamRoy A. Smith of Omaha died 9-27-10. Roy served two years in the US Marine Corps and returned to Omaha to help his father run the automotive business. For many years his family owned H.P. Smith Ford, and later Old Mill Toyota. In 1991, Roy was chair-man of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. As an Omaha business-man and community leader, Roy Smith stood for ethical business practices and a social environment where everyone could succeed regardless of race. Roy advocated for better schools as an antidote to racial problems and worked for better housing and job opportuni-ties. He condemned public slights and gestures of bigotry.

In 1995, Roy was a major contribu-tor for the construction of the H.P. Smith Girls Softball Sports Training Facility, named in honor of his father and intended to serve youths of South Omaha. Roy Smith was also an Adopt-a-School Partner for SHS for many years. Among his many honors were the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award given in 1973; the Whitney Young Award in 1993; Mad Dad’s Brothers Award in 1994; the United Way of the Midlands in 1996; Business Hall of Fame in 1998; and the Free Enterprise Award in 1999; and most recently, the Community Supporter Award given by the SHS Hall of Fame.

We, at the Alumni Association, would like to thank Roy Smith and his family for their generous donations and acts of kindness. Their gracious contributions have truly made a dif-ference in the lives of our youth at South High School and in our South Omaha community.

Marian and Ken Hightower are pictured above in a recent photograph.

KENNETH HIGHTOWER (RETIRED SHS TEACHER) EMPOWERS SOUTH SHOP STUDENTS Numerous shop students at South High owe their acquired skills to Kenneth Hightower who taught there for 37 years. Ken began his teaching career at Tech High in 1946 before transferring to the South O campus in 1948 where he “inherited the blacksmith shop with hot metal and coal fired forges” and recalls it was the only blacksmith shop in town. He taught beginning wood shop students to use hand tools of that time. Eventually he taught all advanced wood-working classes including the safe use of all power tools, furniture construction and fin-ishing. Ken introduced a carpentry course for seniors who built scale model houses. He remembered the carpenters’ union gave credit for these classes to some of his students who were entering the carpentry apprentice program. South Principal Leonard Hansen asked him to be department head of Industrial Arts and Vocational Shops with the directive: “Ken, I know very little about your department. It is yours. All you have to do is keep me in-formed of what is going on.” Ken headed the department for 12 years and said he felt appreciated. He said “while Mr. Hansen and I didn’t always agree, we always knew where we stood.” In the 1970s, the large department had 13 faculty members who taught 1,300 students. Ken says South was “a good place to teach because the families wanted their kids educated. I never had a confrontation with a parent and enjoyed a great working relationship with the students

and their families.” Last year a former carpentry student found Ken and visited the Hightower home. The man had been a student 26 years ago, and wanted pictures of Mr. Hightower with the scale model house he had made in Ken’s class. The student took the scale model house to a class reunion, and it created such a stir that this former student decided to see if he could locate Mr. Hightower who had moved from Benson to Elkhorn. Ken and wife Mar-ian, who will be married 64 years on May 31st, had lived in Benson for 59 years but relocated to Elkhorn four years ago to live next door to their youngest son. Their other children also lived in the Elkhorn area.

Born in 1921, Ken was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served 3-1/2 years in the South Pacific as a combat engineer and returned to the U.S. at Christmas time in 1945. He took advantage of the GI bill to complete classes to receive both his Bachelor’s in 1946 and his Masters in Administration and Psychology degrees in 1950 at Omaha University (now the University of Nebraska at Omaha). His professional memberships have included the Omaha Education Association, Retired Teachers Association and National Educa-tion Association.

They have three children: Jim who is a retired engineer with Omaha Public Power District, Janet who is a math/science teacher with Omaha Public Schools, and Steven who is an engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers. All three followed their fa-ther’s lead by earning degrees from UNO.

The Hightowers have eight adult grandchil-dren including two nurses, a college profes-sor, an engineer, a utility lineman, a sur-veyor, a pilot, and a medical student. They also boast of having 12 great-grandchildren. Upon retirement from South, Ken and his wife traveled extensively on bus tours around the United States and Europe. Ken also enjoyed golf, bowling, hunting, fishing, and spending time with their grandkids and “seeing them grow up and attending their activities.”

Currently he attends retired teachers’ luncheons and lots of church activities. He has served on numerous church boards and spearheaded volunteer groups who main-

tained the Baptist churches he attended. He said a favorite daily activity, in addition to church and family gatherings, is going to get his son’s dog so she can visit with Ken and Marian every afternoon. When asked, Ken gives an emphatic YES that he would choose the same career. He said he feels he was chosen as he did not truly apply for the job. He recalls how the Dean of the College of Education at UNO told him he knew a man who wanted to hire Ken to work for Omaha Public Schools. Ken then went to see Ed Parrish at OPS and was told that shop teachers were scarce and Parrish wanted Hightower to come on board. He summed up his special memo-ries by saying, “I have been very fortunate in my career and in all my associations. My wife and family have been such a fantastic part of my life.”

We salute and thank you for your dedica-tion to teaching generations of South High students such useful skills!

IN MEMORIAM TEACHERS OF SHS

Margaret E. Gearing died 10-10. She was a counselor and taught math at SHS and received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Pittsburgh University.

Stacie Klinger of Omaha, NE died 11-4-10. It was a very sad day for students, staff and faculty at SHS. The headlines read, “Teacher’s death devastates school”. Stacie Klinger, a SHS teacher, was struck by a sports utility vehicle as she walked to a parking lot near SHS. For thirteen years, Stacie taught social studies, American gov-ernment, psychology and sociology. She graduated from UNO with a bachelor’s de-gree in psychology and education and later received her master’s degree in education.

The students at South dedicated a solemn memorial that was centered around a poster of Stacie that read, “You made an amaz-ing difference in our lives.” Many somber students signed the poster and left letters and notes of thanks and appreciation for a teacher who provided caring and compas-sionate support and loving direction to so many students. To honor Stacie, some

students paid tribute by making black and red ribbons. Another student brought a T-shirt for students to sign. Dimly lit candles, flowers, and balloons filled the memorial area and comments and tributes appeared on Facebook. One student wrote a letter stat-ing, Stacie Klinger “will always be a part of the Packer Family.” We thank Stacie for touching so many students’ hearts and lives. Her legacy will live on in the many students that were influenced by her warm presence and generous spirit.

Mary Waugh-Taylor taught dance at SHS and was a beloved choreographer. Sadly, she lost her battle with cancer on 6-25-10.

SHS ARTS & INFORMA-TION TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS STORM THE BIG APPLE

By Dave Weisser

On 5-27-10, a group of 23 South High Magnet School students and five chaperones departed for New York City. The trip was part of the unique magnet offerings for Arts and Information Technology students who are involved in dance, visual arts, theatre, vocal and instrumental music, film, and in-formation technology. While in New York, the students experienced all the city had to offer. This included its many museums, landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, and Broadway performances. As a special treat, the group from SHS was joined by South High alum Betty Volenec-1965, who gave them a per-sonal tour of southern Manhattan. Everyone had a wonderful time, and it was truly one of the many opportunities unique to students at South High Magnet School. This trip

was supported in part by the Alumni Asso-ciation, and all the students and staff who attended send a heartfelt “thank you” for your support of the magnet programs, their students, and staff at South High!

TO INFINITY ANDBEYOND!!!

By Jennifer Cifuentes andStephanie Zambrano - 2012

Omaha South High had the opportunity to have Clayton Anderson, an astronaut, who talked with students about his life and trips to space. Anderson has several ties to OPS. His mom was a student at Omaha South High School. He also has nieces that go to Benson. He had a cool personality and was joking around. He has been in space twice. The first time was in the year 2007, and he lived in a space station for five months and survived. The second time he went to space was this year in April. His crew launched a day after Easter. He said that every second they traveled five miles, and they go around the earth every 90 minutes.

His flight was the first to have two Japanese astronauts go into space. The astronauts had to do specific jobs before moving to the next station, because there were specific stations where they had to be. For example, one of the female astronauts had to move 1,800 pounds of equipment to certain areas of the space shuttle. Once they had to go out and fix machinery, and they had to stay in their suits for six hours because they had to be very cautious when they’re fixing the heavy equipment. That meant the astro-nauts couldn’t go to the bathroom the whole time!

But it wasn’t all work; it was also having fun and enjoying the atmosphere. Anderson showed video of the astronauts blowing M&Ms into water bubbles. The ladies in space can’t control their hair, and you grow about two inches taller in space. The astro-nauts have to wear masks that cover their eyes because the sun comes out every orbit.

You are probably wondering where astro-nauts go to the bathroom. They go to the bathroom by aiming into a vacuum like tube. That actually sounds really hard. So hold it in if you don’t want to have an ac-cident.

The total days Anderson spent in space were 167. It looked like they had a lot of fun. Anderson said you too can be an astronaut. It will take a lot of determination and listen-ing. All you have to do is reach for your dreams and reach for the stars.

This article reprinted with permission from the November 2010 South High Tooter newspaper.

Editor’s Note: Clayton Anderson was the keynote speaker at our 2010 Packer Power for Education Scholarship Fundraiser “Jewels & Tools, Etc.” on 10-22-10 and your Alumni Association arranged his visit to SHS to address the students earlier that day. We were proud to observe that the students listened intently and watched his videos with their full attention.

“Drill provides a means, through ceremo-nies, of enhancing morale, developing the spirit of cohesion, and presenting tradition-al, interesting and well executed parades. The objectives accomplished by drill are teamwork, confidence, discipline, alertness, and attention to detail, espirit de corps, and pride. It instills habits of precision and response to leader’s orders and provides the participant the opportunity to practice com-manding and directing.”

JROTC Drill at South High School offers many teams and provides an opportunity for students to choose activities of their choice. These teams are open to all students enrolled in JROTC at South High. In addi-tion, students gain an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, and visit with students from other schools during the competitions and while participating in community events.

Color Guard consists of five members. They carry the National Flag, State Flag, and School Flag, with two Guards that carry Standard Military Drill Rifles that are detailed and chromed. The Color Guard performs opening ceremonies at school sporting events, community organizations, musical activities, honor organizations, and participate in local parades. They also compete in the annual Invitational Drill Meets hosted by OPS, UNO, Bellevue, and in the Tri-City Meet. Team categories are Varsity, Junior Varsity, and an all Female Team. Members of the Color Guard begin practice early in the school year and con-tinue through the spring.
