Chantez a Dieu (1621) ................................................... Jan Sweelinck

Psalm 96

Sing unto God new songs upraising, Sing thou, O world, His glory praising, Sing thou and bless His holy name. Yea from day to day tell His fame,

Upon His great salvation gazing.

Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal (1967) .............................. Traditional

arr. Alice Parker

Daemon Irrepit Callidus (1997) ................................... György Orbán

The Demon sneaks expertly Tempting the honorable heart; He sets forth trickery amidst praise, song and dance However amiably the Demon acts, It is still worth less than the heart of Jesus.

The Flesh is tempted by sensuality; Gluttony clings to our senses; It overgrows, it encroaches, it stretches. However appealing the Flesh is, It is still worth less than the heart of Jesus.

Though the Universe may confer Thousands upon thousands of praises, They neither fulfill nor put out the desire of the heart. However appealing the whole Universe is, It is still worth less than the heart of Jesus.

The Madrigal Singers Ensemble

The 2015-2016 Madrigal Singers is an extra-curricular group of 22

singers that perform approximately 20 times each season. Many

study private voice, participate in our district solo festival, and

participate in the school musical. The group is the most select vocal

ensemble at the school and performs a wide variety of literature. The

Madrigal Singers have previously performed at IMEC (2011) and the

Illinois Fall ACDA Convention (2014).

The name “Madrigal Singers” is not truly representative of the group’s

choral literature. Performances include music from many genres and

may include blocking and minimal movement to depict the music.

Literature choices include chamber music, madrigals, world music, ,

and vocal jazz with an emphasis on a cappella singing.

The Choral Program

With over 220 participants, the choral program at South is comprised of 4 curricular choirs, 4 auditioned select choirs that meet daily opposite a lunch-time resource period, and the “Overtones,” a combined curricular all male singing group that rehearses twice each week as a pull-out from the curricular choir. South High School choirs enjoy a longstanding tradition of strong student participation in both ILMEA District and All-State ensembles. Students have the opportunity to study voice privately during the school day. Students that study privately participate in the annual vocal festival, which culminates in a collaborative District Honors Vocal recital with DGN. Students may also elect to participate in the Fine Arts Honors Program, a program which extends typical classroom learning experiences through juries, recitals and other performance opportunities. In addition to annual choral concerts, performance opportunities include a thematic show in the early spring and a Broadway musical produced by the A Cappella Choir. Recent travel destinations for the South High School choirs include Washington DC, New York city, London and Austria. The majority of the select ensembles rehearse daily during lunch resource periods. These intense co-curricular ensembles offer more than 80 students the opportunity to explore vocal performance and musicianship at a deeper level. Numerous performing opportunities in the surrounding communities provide these students with ongoing means to develop performance skills.

The Choral Staff

Laura Coster and Joy Belt-Roselieb team teach each large curricular ensemble and each direct a select ensemble. Dr. Ricardo Pedroza, also the collaborative pianist in the department, conducts a select ensemble and the male singing group the “Overtones.” Jen Rickert, choir director at Lakeview Middle School, conducts the Freshmen Girls Select Ensemble in addition to her duties at LJHS. This collaborative team approach provides students with diverse learning experiences, and, enables a continuing sequence of small group work and sectionals which improves both individual and ensemble vocal performance.

For 50 years, countless numbers of concerts, parades, paintings, drawings and sculptures have delighted supporters of the arts, and creatd a mosaic of memorable performances and awards. She has a bachelor and master’s degree in music education and choral conducting from the University of Illinois in Champaign. In addition,

Laura has a master’s degree in school counseling from Northeastern IL University. She has served as the District 1 ILMEA Choral Chair , and she started the first Illinois 9-10 District Honor Choir in Illinois. She had the privilege of directing the ILMEA 9-10 Honor Choir in 2007 and has also conducted the ASCA (American Association of Christian Schools of America) for three years. She has led the ILMEA All-State Choir sectionals for many years and has also performed with the St. Charles Singers. Laura has presented Treble Reading Sessions for the ACDA Central Division, has written articles for the ACDA State Newsletter, and currently serves as Secretary for IL-ACDA. Most of all, Laura enjoys spending time with her husband, Doug, daughter, Elisabeth, and son, Chris.

Dr. Ricardo Pedroza, Collaborative Pianist

Ricardo Pedroza is the collaborative pianist and director of the Treble Ensemble and Overtones at Downers Grove South High School. He serves as music director at New Hope Lutheran Church in Aurora, IL, and teaches piano in the surrounding communities. Ricardo has a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from

Vicente Emilio Sojo Conservatory of Music in Venezuela and a master’s degree in piano and choral conducting from West Texas A&M University. He also holds a doctoral degree in musical arts from Texas Tech University. Dr. Pedroza has a rich international music background having taught, conducted, and performed in Venezuela, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and across the United States.

Sean Ivory, commissioned composer of “Chanson”

Sean Ivory has been the vocal music instructor at Forest Hills Central High School since 1992. He is the director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus and its select treble ensemble, Mandala. Mr. Ivory is also adjunct professor of music at Calvin College where he serves as the principal conductor of the Calvin Oratorio Society and conductor of the Campus Choir, a mixed choral ensemble with student membership from across all disciplines of the college. Mr. Ivory attended

Northwestern University, Calvin College, and Michigan State University. His choirs have performed at both state and regional conventions for the American Choral Directors Association and have toured Ireland, the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Ghana, and the Czech Republic. Mr. Ivory has arranged and composed several published works (in collaboration with Chicago composer Paul Caldwell) including Go Where I Send Thee, Ani Ma'Amin, John the Revelator, and Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down. Hope for Resolution: A Song for Mandela and DeKlerk continues to be a staple of choirs all over the world and was recently recorded on the CD/DVD A St. Olaf Christmas in Norway. Mr. Ivory’s works are published by Earthsongs, GIA Music ,and Hal Leonard. Downers Grove South Friends of Fine Arts, commissioned Sean Ivory to create Chanson for the 2014-2015 Madrigal Singers in memory of Kelly Fullerton Snyder. Kelly succumbed to a long battle with cancer on May 21, 2014.

Kelly was a French teacher in District 99, a long-term Booster participant, and a life-long musician. Because of her broad participation in the learning community in District 99, Kelly’s impact on those around here was pervasive.

Chanson is based on one of Kelly’s favorite poems by Jacques Prévert. The music and the text combine to create a piece that is simply stunning. For those who knew Kelly, this piece perpetuates her memory in a remarkable way. For those that didn’t know her, this piece gives a glimpse into who she was and the life that she lived.
