Reporting period The Year in Review has been produced to provide members with an outline of our recent performance and activities.

This report covers the period 1st July 2010 to 30th June 2011 unless otherwise stated.

The Division would like to thank the Sponsors, volunteers and members for making 2010-2011 such a successful year.

Opportunities available in 2012,and how to gain recognition for yourself, others and your organisation

Engineers Australia South Australia Division participates in a number of award programmes each year. The most well known of these is the South Australian Engineering Excellence Awards. Dates for the entries and individual nominations will open early 2012, so keep an eye out in the South Australia Division newsletter. Recognition of a member can occur at any time through encouragement to apply for the grade of Fellow. As a Fellow of Engineers Australia an engineer will be recognised as being amongst the true leaders of the industry and profession.

Your organisation can promote itself through: getting involved in events (such as Australian Engineering Week and EngQuest); having your staff volunteer to assist as a school speaker, Chartered Interviewer or at one of the many events Engineers Australia hold. Consider contributing in the annual Graduate and Undergraduate Handbook. The Handbook is published each year and assists undergraduate students with finding work experience as part of their university course requirements or perhaps a Graduate engineer position in the following year.

Getting involved in these events can assist on a personal level as well as exposing you to new experiences and methods and also assisting in maintaining your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). You can get involved with the various College Branches and Special Interest Group committees, or assist them with an event, which is a great way to expand your network and guide the future direction of the Engineers Australia South Australia Division.

President’s Report

During my year of Presidency I have had the privilege of being involved in many wonderful activities including the Year of Humanitarian Engineering. This themed year provided the opportunity to showcase the impact that engineers can and do have on those less fortunate than ourselves, whether these are in Australia or overseas. We also saw the launch of the Make it so campaign aimed at engaging with the wider community about who engineers are and what they do for society. Since it’s launch the community submitted over 7000 ideas to Engineers Australia to ‘Make it so’, and the winning idea pleasingly was from an undergraduate student in South Australia.

The Sir Eric Neal Address was privileged to hear Dr Lynn Arnold AO as the guest speaker. Dr Arnold is currently the Chief Executive of Anglicare SA, following eleven years with World Vision Australia and World Vision International.

Our Division Committee approved an initiative to produce and publish the South Australian Engineering Wonders – Engine Room. The publication was launched in August during Australian Engineering Week and identified the great engineering achievements of our state over the last 10 years, and promoted the engineers and engineering teams who ‘made it so’. The inaugural publication was distributed to South Australians as a major supplement to the Advertiser newspaper and the comprehensive publication publicised and showcased the important contributions that engineers have made to the growth, prosperity and lifestyle of the people of South Australia over the past ten years. I would like to express my gratitude to my Division Committee volunteers who helped in the creation of this publication. We hope that it will inspire our younger generation to consider a career in engineering and educate their parents and schoolteachers with examples of the fascinating and satisfying work that engineers do.

Australian Engineering Week held during August highlighted a number of interesting events including a number of activities

with our National President Merv Lindsay FIEAust CPEng, such as a discussion forum on the importance of Chartered Status and proposed changes to streamline assessment processes, site visits to engineering showcases in South Australia (the Adelaide Desalination Plant and the ASC submarine maintenance facility at Osborne) and a presentation by Colonel Neil Greet FIEAust on the humanitarian engineering activities of the Australian Army. It all culminated in Science Alive! where the Division interacted with thousands of primary and secondary school children, with the assistance of Jacobs Engineering and Team BaCoN from Trinity College.

Engineers Australia made a commitment to ‘closing the gap’, and producing a national Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) – see more on the RAP later in this report. This plan was released in August 2011 and defined what we can do individually and as a profession in the areas of Respect, Relationships and Opportunities. Many organisations are embracing reconciliation as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programs. In support of our RAP a workshop was held during the year attended by senior representatives of 20 major engineering employers to share learnings in the important area of reconciliation, and what engineers in particular can contribute. Two of the key outcomes from this workshop were maintaining ongoing contact with relevant local Indigenous groups to help inform future actions; and influencing government and corporate policies relating to Indigenous issues. I hope you will all seek to contribute to the RAP in whatever way you can.

I also had the privilege of hosting the annual Past Presidents’ luncheon at the Engineers Australia headquarters with 20 past presidents in attendance. I was challenged by this group to consider how Engineers Australia could be more influential in South Australia and I was able to point out that the Immediate Past President Doug Gillott FIEAust EngExec had recently started the Parliamentary Fellows program in response to this challenge. Our venerable past presidents were also strongly of the view that

Australia should have a mature debate on the issue of nuclear energy, as one of the long term solutions to energy sustainability and climate change.

Our Excellence Awards again saw over 350 guests in attendance and showcased the fantastic achievements of engineers in this State and their contribution to the wider community. I would like to personally congratulate the winning engineering teams who made the projects possible.

Engineers Australia has nearly 100,000 members, around 6000 of whom are in South Australia, and we rely on those members who are motivated to volunteer their time to support the small number of Division staff. We are indeed very fortunate to have the commitment and skills of these dedicated people.

I would like to thank my colleagues on the South Australian Division Committee, and the other numerous volunteers who run the various technical committees across the organisation. Their dedication provides the opportunities for all of us to gain valuable professional development and build the relationships essential to our success. Each member has contributed tirelessly and represented their profession admirably.

2011 is the busiest year the South Australia Division has ever seen. Our member engagement is well over 45% busier than 2010, our membership has grown and outstanding results like these are not possible without the efforts of our members, sponsors and staff.

1. Community Engagement

Australian Engineering Week took place during 2nd – 8th August 2010 and throughout the week the Division held 27 site visits and workshops. The South Australia Division also had a booth at Science Alive! from 6th to 8th August 2010 at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Science Alive! reached record attendances with over 40,000 people over the three days. The Australian Engineering Week promotional material was distributed to all South Australian secondary schools.

2. Body of Knowledge and Professional Development

The Sir Eric Neal Address was held in February 2011 with over 160 attendees. The Guest Speaker was Dr Lynn Arnold AO. Dr Arnold’s presentation was titled ‘Slumdog Engineer’ and focused on the opportunities for engineers to contribute to humanitarian work. A Breakfast Briefing was also held with over 80 attendees. The theme for the event was Transit Oriented Developments and the guest speakers were GB Arrington, of PB PlaceMaking and Rod Hook, of DTEI. The Division in conjunction with CELM and YEA hosted the first seminar in the lead up to the 2012 Engineering Leadership Conference. The event titled “Pathways to Leadership” was held over breakfast with over 100 attendees. The guest speakers were Steve Ludlam FREng FIEAust of ASC and Andrew Fletcher FIEAust CPEng of Defence SA.

During the year President David Cruickshanks-Boyd and I met with all Society and Group Chairs and discussed objectives for the coming year. These meetings are an important communicative tool and will continue under President Elect Gerry Doyle in 2012.

The division hosted numerous technical events throughout the year and again the efforts of our volunteers are to be congratulated in organising the continuing professional development on offer to the membership. We give thanks to the vital input of members in delivering this important function. In providing such a comprehensive CPD program to the membership the contributions

of all of our volunteers is greatly appreciated.

3. Leadership and Influence

The Leadership Development Series managed by CELM Executive Committee continued with administration and event support from the Division. The final three sessions were held during the year. The Division also provided support for the 2012 Engineering Leadership Conference Organising Committee.

4. Recognition, Promotion and Membership

The 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards Dinner was held on 10th September 2010 at the National Wine Centre and sold out well in advance with over 360 attendees. The Division held a combined Student and Graduate “Secrets to Networking” event with over 60 registrations. The event provided attendees the opportunity to receive advice from more experienced engineers about the value of networking.

5. Education and Qualification

The South Australia Division continued the successful Campus Coordinator Program with the University of Adelaide and University of South Australia. The Campus Coordinators and YEA Committee held student BBQ’s in late 2010 and the Division participated in a number of visits to the universities during the year.

Nationally Engineers Australia surpassed last year’s EngQuest participation. Great work was performed by all of the many, many volunteers and this was evidenced in the 46,763 students participating nationally in 2011.

6. Internal Structure and Administration

The South Australian Division Committee developed three portfolios: Engineering Wonders, Construction and Year of Humanitarian Engineering. The portfolios developed aims and members of Division Committee worked towards delivering outcomes and events against these initiatives during the year.

Again our communication channels with our members continue to evolve ensuring that all members have access to the most up to date information from Engineers Australia.

On the staffing front the Division welcomed Events Coordinator Sharryn Fensom and Member Programs Coordinator Ashlea Klingberg. Our experienced staff team of Deputy Director Sarah Carey, Member Relationship Coordinator Nathan Jones, Events Coordinator Sharryn Fensom and Customer Service Officer Kirstein Bartlett again performed above expectations in providing member services.

I would like to recognise and thank all members in particular President David Cruickshanks-Boyd for his wisdom and leadership throughout the year.

Qualification: MSc Nuclear Engineering, Royal Navy College, Greenwich, UK

Current position: Managing Director and CEO, ASC, Adelaide As both a trained Mechanical and Nuclear Engineer, I hold a Master of Science from Royal Naval College, Greenwich, am a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers, Fellow of Engineers Australia and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Until December 2009, I was with Rolls Royce in the United Kingdom. During this time I held a variety of roles, including senior positions for the company, holding responsibilities in Europe and the United States. My last role was as President – Submarines, a role in which I had full accountability of the company’s submarine business.

I have managed the design and construction of all kinds of vessels and ship equipment, particularly nuclear submarines, diesel submarines and major surface combatants in the United Kingdom, Europe, America and Australia.

Successive leadership roles also required stakeholder engagement with numerous government and non government organisations. I have been a key stakeholder in a number Defence strategic change programs, having strong relationships with the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Defence, the Defence Materiel Organisation and major industry throughout the United Kingdom, Australia, continental Europe and the United States.

Joining ASC as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in January 2010, I currently manage over 1,700 employees at the Commonwealth owned company that is building three air warfare destroyers and maintaining Australia’s fleet of Collins Class submarines.

This role requires me to lead, collaborate, fight for, and challenge the people of ASC. I am building a vision and a business plan for the company spanning the next 50 years.

Since joining ASC, my focus is on strong leadership and increased efficiency and effectiveness.

The first signs of the success of this approach were evident in the increase of revenue for ASC in the 2009/10 financial year reaching $515.7 million, up almost 47% on the previous year. In the last 12 months we have also seen an increase in labour efficiency of 60 percent.

Leadership My path to becoming a leader has been relatively conventional, working my way up the ranks, seeking ‘counsel’ from a variety of experienced and successful people in my industry, company and customer base. I find that a variety of ideas and views leads to a better balance of approaches and decisions.

My role is about constantly building the confidence of this team and building individual leadership qualities so employees put their hand up when they’ve made a mistake or understand the implications of a poor decision.

I have to prepare the emergence of the new generation of leader in the Australian defence industry. Men and women who have the skills to work in both construction

2010 - 2011 Division Events Overview2010 Australian Engineering WeekMonday 4 th August - Sunday 10 th August 2010Australian Engineering Week 2010 was held 2nd – 8th August 2010 in South Australia. The week included 27 inspiring, innovative and informative site tours and workshops, participation from highly respected public figures, and wonderful community support. In total there were over 350 registrations for events held by the South Australia Division, representing a wide range of people.

A number of the tours held this year booked out. These included the Traffic Management Centre, Coca Cola, the Desalination Plant, Coopers Brewery and the ETSA Utilities Network Operation Centre. Students and overseas professionals also benefitted from three job hunting presentations

Engineers Australia South Australia Division also had a booth at Science Alive! on Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th August 2010 in the Goyder Pavillion at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Science Alive! is one of the premier events for promoting science to students in South Australia.

We would like to thank the numerous organisations, speakers and volunteers who have assisted in making this week the success it was.

2010 South Australian Engineering Excellence AwardsFriday 10 th September 2010The 2010 South Australian Engineering Excellence Awards, hosted on Friday 10th September 2010 by Engineers Australia SA Division President, Doug Gillott, brought together over 350 guests with the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR CompIEAust, to celebrate a year of achievements of South Australia’s professional engineering innovators.

The overall highest recognition for an engineering project, the Malcolm Kinnaird Engineering Excellence Award, was won by the Techport Australia Common User Facility that will play a key role in building the new Air Warfare Destroyers for the Royal Australian Navy.

The evening also featured recognition of the outstanding contribution to the engineering profession of individual South Australians. This included SA Professional Engineer of the Year – Professor Karen Reynolds FIEAust, SA Young Professional Engineer of the Year – Anthony Elder MIEAust CPEng and SA Engineering Technologist of the Year – Patrick Campbell TMIEAust CEngT.

2010 - 2011 Division Events OverviewCELM LDS Session 9 and 10Wednesday 1 st September and Wednesday 27 th October 2010To ensure the success of the South Australian engineering profession into the future, engineering in SA needs a diverse cadre of leaders who are adaptable and able to inspire, motivate and guide others to produce tangible results. These leaders will mentor and challenge the workforce and demonstrate high standards of honesty, integrity, trust, openness and respect.

The Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management SA Chapter (CELM SA) Leadership Development Series (LDS) was a development planning tool aimed at creating the next generation of leaders and managers within the engineering profession.

Session 9, held 1st September 2010, covered the topic of Knowledge Management with guest speaker Tim O’Callaghan, Partner, Piper Alderman. Session 10 was the final session of the series, held 27th October 2011. This session highlighted the fundamentals of “Making the Numbers Work” with guest speaker Mark Coughlin, Partner - Advisory for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Feedback on the all LDS sessions, and the series itself, was extremely positive.

2011 Sir Eric Neal AddressThursday 24 t h February 2011The 2011 Sir Eric Neal Address, hosted Thursday 24th February 2011 by Engineers Australia South Australia Division President, Dr David Cruickshanks-Boyd, brought together over 160 guests with the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR CompIEAust\, to recognise and honour exceptional leadership in engineering.

Guest speaker Dr Lynn Arnold AO delivered the key note address. As 2011 is the Year of Humanitarian Engineering, Dr Arnold’s address, as Chief Executive of Anglicare SA and with eleven years experience with World Vision in various roles, was appropriate given the theme for the year.

The first award of the evening presented was the Craig Gilbert Leadership Award. The winner of the award was Timothy Hensel StudIEAust. Three University Medals were also presented. These medals recognise exceptional performance by engineering students. The Flinders University Medal was presented to Lachlan Eberhard; the Keith Johinke Medal was presented to Mark Argent StudIEAust; and the Arvi Parbo Medal was presented to Kian Kong.

2010 - 2011 Division Events OverviewParliamentary Fellows Program Networking EventThursday 28th April 2011In April 2011 the South Australia Division hosted an evening networking event for the Chartered Professional Fellows in the Parliamentary Fellows Program (PFP). Thirteen of the twenty-five Fellows now involved in the PFP met to hear from retired South Australian Minister, Hon Trish White FIEAust and to exchange their experiences working with South Australian MPs.

The meeting was prompted following an enquiry by Tasmania Division who are in the process of starting their own PFP and wanted up to date feedback. Immediate Past President Doug Gillott FIEAust CPEng visited Hobart after the meeting to pass on the information to Tasmania Division President (and previous South Australia Division Deputy President) Greg Walters FIEAust CPEng EngExec.

The PFP brings senior engineers into contact with the decision makers in our community and exposes them to the workings of the South Australian Parliament.

March Breakfast BriefingThursday 31 st March 2011Covering the topic of Transit Oriented Developments (TODs), a Breakfast Briefing was held on the morning of March 31st at the Adelaide Pavilion. Over 80 guests attended and enjoyed the presentations delivered by GB Arrington, Principal Practice Leader for PB PlaceMaking, and Rod Hook who is the Deputy Chief of DTEI.

Travelling from the United States, guest speaker GB Arrington presented ‘Making Transit Oriented Developments a Reality – An International Perspective’. GB discussed the award-winning direction of Portland Oregon’s transit agency.

Rod Hook shared ‘The 30 Year Plan and how TODs fit into it’. Adelaide is on a road to improvement, with a plan to build a sustainable transport system, one that is integrated, coordinated, affordable, efficient and safe. Those who attended received an insight to the potential projects to be undertaken within the city, including the plan for tramline extensions.

The engineering profession is sure to look forward to the changes ahead.

2010 - 2011 Division Events OverviewConstruction Industry LuncheonWednesday 18th May 2011On Wednesday 18th May 2011, representatives from the construction industry gathered for lunch at Engineers Australia. This provided an opportunity for those involved to discuss Engineers Australia’s role in the construction industry and how this could be strengthened.

The group included senior executives from local and national construction companies as well as representatives from the Civil Contractors Federation. It was clear from discussions that Engineers Australia has an important role to play in the development of Engineers in construction; however the importance of providing relevant development programs was stressed. To this end the South Australia Division, through a local survey, will build on the work of the National Committee for Construction’s recent survey to gain an understanding of what programs local construction companies and their Engineers feel would benefit most. In addition, it was agreed a joint function between Engineers Australia and Civil Contractors Federation at the CCF’s new training centre would be held to promote the benefits of both organisations and facilitate the interaction and involvement of both Design and Construction Engineers.

Past Presidents LuncheonMonday 30th May 2011Division President Dr David Cruickshanks-Boyd FIEAust EngExec met with previous South Australia Division Presidents – one from as early as 1966 (Mr Skip Tonkin AM Hon FIEAust CPEng) - and discussed current issues within the profession at the annual Past Presidents Lunch, which took place on Monday 30th May 2011 at Engineers Australia. This provided a good opportunity for all to gather and have a friendly and professional catch up.

With all the media attention on the carbon tax, the discussion at the Past Presidents’ luncheon inevitably got around to the topic of energy security and climate change, two of the really big issues facing Australia at the present time. Our venerable past presidents were strongly of the view that Australia should have a mature debate on the issue of nuclear energy, as one of the long term solutions to energy sustainability and climate change.

Reconciliation Action Plan WorkshopThursday 26th May 2011On Thursday 26th May 2011, a group of senior representatives from numerous organisations gathered at the Engineers Australia South Australia Division Sir Robert Chapman Theatre. The group were welcomed with a traditional ‘Ninna Marni’ from Aunty Josie for the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Workshop.

The workshop was facilitated by Division President Dr David Cruickshanks-Boyd FIEAust EngExec. The workshop focused on topics which will help Engineers Australia further develop and implement a successful RAP, ‘Respect’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Opportunities’.

Grant Paulson, Group Manager at Reconciliation Australia, gave an insightful presentation as to why developing a RAP is an important step to take and shared valuable information on how to get started.

2010 - 2011 Division Events OverviewPathways To Leadership BreakfastWednesday 22nd June 2011In the lead-up to the 2012 Engineering Leadership Conference in Adelaide, the Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management (CELM) and Young Engineers Australia (YEA) have teamed up to host a series of four thought-provoking seminars in 2011 and early 2012.

These will explore personal and professional leadership topics aligned with the sub-themes of the conference – Pathways to Leadership; Transitions in Leadership; Engineering Leadership in Industry; and Engineering a Better Society.

The first event, Pathways to Leadership, was held over breakfast on Wednesday 22nd June 2011, offering a forum for participants to discuss and reflect on their career paths and progression.

Our speakers for the first breakfast were: Steve Ludlam FREng FIEAust, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, ASC, Andrew Fletcher FIEAust CPEng, Chief Executive, Defence SA and our facilitator for the event was Heath Colebatch, Business and Risk Solutions.

2010 - 2011 Group and Society Annual ReportsRetired Engineers GroupFormed in late 2003 with our first function held in February 2004 the Retired Engineers Group of the South Australian Division of Engineers Australia has now completed its eighth year of operation.

Three luncheon meetings and a site visit were held during the past year. All functions were well attended by both retired and practicing engineers alike. The June meeting was a joint function with the IET Retired Engineers Group as in previous years. The functions for 2010-2011 were: November 2010 - Accelerating Research to Feed the World presented by Anthony Di Marzo with 26 attendees; March 2011 - Efficient Efficiency Testing “An Ingenious Technique for Testing Electric Motors” presented by Professor Andrew Baghurst with 40 attendees; June 2011 - Engineering A City “Looking at Adelaide through an engineering filter” presented by Richard Venus with 85 attendees; July 2011 - Geothermal Power “Sounds good but will it work?” presented by Allan Curtis with 97 attendees.

The November meeting held at Urrbrae House was followed by a visit to The Super Greenhouse at the University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus. Professor Mark Tester hosted the visit to this state of the art facility of world significance. Andrew Baghurst gave an insight into his ingenious and award winning technique for motor testing. At short notice we were fortunate that Richard Venus was able to bring forward his address when geothermal activity prevented Allan Curtis from flying to Adelaide from Brisbane. Richard’s presentation captivated all with his revealing of Adelaide’s hidden engineering heritage and its contribution to the city’s development. We were indeed fortunate to have Allan Curtis back in July

and in a most informative presentation, reveal some of the many issues to be resolved before electric energy from geothermal power is viable.

The Group continues to be self funding, with the charge levied for each meeting on balance meeting or exceeding our costs. Our funds continue to slowly accumulate. The Groups intention remains to apply funds over and above our needs as a donation when an appropriate engineering oriented cause is identified.

Two members achieved 70 years membership of Engineers Australia during the year. Certificates were provided to Alan Sando and Lindsay Taylor in recognition of this milestone. Almost as significant is the 60 year milestone which the Division is now recognising with a backlog of 37 certificates of recognition being issued to date.

The success of the group indicates that it continues to meet a need within the ranks of the more senior members of Engineers Australia while also appealing to practicing engineers and members’ spouses. This success has been due in no small part to the input from two sources. Firstly, the Division Staff who are particularly helpful. Secondly, the members of the group committee, Peter O’Keefe our Group Secretary, Peter Ball, John Underwood, David Linn, Malcolm Langmaid and Peter Crammond who has continued his involvement as a corresponding member. They have all played their part in guiding the Retired Engineers Group. I thank them all for their contributions.

The Group can look forward to another successful year in 2012.

Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management - South Australia Division Executive CommitteeThe Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management in SA focuses on the developing and encouraging Engineers as leaders.

CELM and YEA have continued to prepare for the Engineering Leadership conference to be held in Adelaide in 2012. The conference theme is “Passing the Baton" and conference development is progressing well with strong support from the Committee and Engineers Australia.

In the run up to the event, three of four pre events showcasing the conference themes have been held. The first event covered “Pathways to leadership” with two CEO speakers Steve Ludlam of ASC and Andrew Fletcher of Defence SA in June. In August, Anne Howe former CEO of SA Water presented on Transitions in Leadership . In October, Professor Peter Dowd presented on Engineering a Better Society. The committee thanks Kym Williams from Business Risk Solutions who facilitated the discussions. A further event is planned in late February.

The Craig Gilbert Leadership Award representing outstanding undergraduate leadership continued to be administered. The committee is seeking ways to extend this or similar awards to a greater cross section of engineering undergraduates. A future plan is in preparation to determine how to manage the award after

this year – different ideas are being considered.

In 2011, we established a branding and promotions group looking at opportunities in promoting and raising the profile of EngExec and the level 3 competencies. Recent achievements include placing an EngExec advertisement in EA magazine alongside the article on the top 100 engineers; a questionnaire sent out to all EngExecs to understand value proposition to determine why they chose to apply for the post nominal. This included a workshop to review the value proposition of the EngExec post nominal. The information and experience is being shared with other CELM chapters and the CELM board.

The CELM committee reviewed its membership demographic with the aim of making it more representative of the areas where EA members are employed. Member now include state, education, construction, professional services and manufacturing representatives.

Business planning was undertaken in mid Feb and a meeting was held with the Advisory group in March 2011 to challenge the plan and make any final adjustments. Specific challenges were aimed around making it more compelling. Fixed tenure was incorporated for committee members as part of improvements incorporated from a meeting of chapter chairs from across Australia and the CELM Board.

We look forward to an exciting 2012 and a successful Engineering Leadership Conference.

2010 - 2011 Group and Society Annual Reports (cont)Footings GroupThe Footings Group had a successful and influential year in the advent of the publication of the Code – Residential Slabs and Footings AS2870-2011, by Standards Australia on 17th January 2011.

The Footings Group has also undergone changes to its operations after scrutiny by Engineers Australia, a vote by members have accepted that the committee and members of the Footings Group need to be financial members of Engineers Australia and that subscriptions by Footings Group are to be cancelled and the current account deposit to be depleted within 3 years. The Footings Group sought opinions and presented to the Group for a vote. The group remains under the umbrella of Engineers Australia and abiding to its new rules.

The Group had officially two technical session with attendees of over 40. The 2011 sessions were: 17th February - External Seminar organized by UTS on 15th of February. New Residential Slabs and Footings Standards AS2870-2011, (the meeting on the 17 was postponed due to the external seminar); 19th May - Designing Trees to AS28710-2011 and Background Information leading to the Design Method. Presenters were Dr D Cameron (Uni SA), A O’Malley (Golders) and Tim Johnson (City of Mitcham); 18th August - Problems Associated with Building and EMS soils. Presenters were J Slade (SMEC Aust), Dr M Duthy (Aurecon) and R Gibbs (Factor Consulting Engineers); and 17th November - Annual Group Meeting. The Technical topic will be Using AS2870-2011 – Are you prepared? By Dr P Mitchell (Aurecon) and J Mikucki (FMG Engineering).

Financial Status: (Current Account Deposit) The Closing balance of reserve was $14,708.25 in October, with a financial membership of 40. Committee Members for 2011 were: Don Cameron (Resigned); Peter Mitchelll; Jan Mikucki; Trevor Kakkinakis; Rex Gibbs; Peter Cox; Richard Atkinson; Glen Trebilcock; and Thomas Ha.

South Australian Committee for Women in EngineeringThe South Australian Committee for Women in Engineering (WIE SA) continued its revitalisation in 2011 with 15 committee members (including 3 state technical/group representatives) signing on for another year.

In 2011, WIE SA prepared a business plan outlining the committee’s vision to promote engineering as an inclusive profession which values, supports and celebrates the contribution of women in the engineering team. This vision is reinforced through the National Mission Statement and ensures that WIE SA operates in accordance with general directives set by Engineers Australia (EA) and the National Women in Engineering Committee (NC WIE).

Highlights of the year included: Successfully delivered four exciting and topical events in 2011, with an average attendance of 60 members at each event; Building strong relationships with like minded groups. The majority of events were held jointly with partners such as Young Engineers Australia (YEA),the Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management (CELM), Women in Project Management (WIPM) and Engineers without Borders (EWB); Actively helping the National Committee with the 15th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientist, which was held in July at the Adelaide Convention Centre; Creating a new Attractions Officer role on committee to represent WIE SA at career nights such as EA’s Engineer This night at Mawson Lakes; and Former Vice Chair of WIE Committee (Michelle Thompson) being appointed to Chair of NC WIE.

We look forward to an exciting and eventful upcoming year in 2012.

Engineering Heritage SAThe Adelaide City Council sponsored the second reprint of “Engineering A City” in April: a total of 10,000 copies have now been produced in just 18 months. The interest in this topic continues unabated and I have given talks to a history or community group, such as the North Adelaide Society and the Adelaide Club History Group, at least once a month. The colourful Engineers Australia banner helps reminds people of the contributions of our profession to the building of their City. A prototype itinerary for a walking tour was trialled with National President Merv Lindsay in July and we plan to offer walks in future Engineering and History Weeks. A meeting with the History Teachers Association has identified unfortunate barriers to making this material available to students.

An interpretive sign highlighting the engineering aspects of the former Glenelg Service reservoir was erected in Park 17 by the Adelaide City Council in September.

An ongoing audit of engineering heritage markers found that the plaque at Roseworthy recognising the Ridley Stripper was missing. We are currently working with the Campus Manager to arrange its replacement.

Dr Nigel Ridgway presented a paper at the biennial Engineering Heritage Conference in Hobart in November and attended the meeting of the Engineering Heritage Australia Board. I continue as our representative on the History Council of SA.

There was a pleasing response to our call for new members of the committee and we have started planning for the inaugural Engineering Heritage SA conference in History Month 2012.

Young Engineers Australia - South AustraliaFor Young Engineers - South Australia (YEA-SA) 2011 has seen a reinvigoration with new members and plenty of successful events. In all we held 12 events, plus what the Campus Coordinators ran. The YEA-SA highlights for the year include the Industry Networking Nights, the “Stories from the Field” seminar series and the Leadership Seminars.

The Industry Networking Nights were held at the Elephant Pub of Rundle Street, where we had industry representatives present to our members on their company’s role, what they look for in their employees and potential employment opportunities. This year Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) have presented. Next year we have BHP-Billiton confirmed and plan on running up to 10 Industry Networking Nights, subject to company support.

In support of the Year of Humanitarian Engineering, YEA-SA has ran the “Stories from the Field” seminar series, representing engineering work conducted by RedR, Care Australia, MSF and Engineers Without Borders (EWB). Due to their popularity, and in conjunction with RedR, YEA-SA will arrange for more presentations like this in the future.

In preparation for the 2012 Engineering Leadership Conference here in Adelaide, YEA-SA and CELM-SA have been running breakfast briefings relating to the themes of the conference. Three have been run this year with the final presentation to be held early next year.

As the out-going Chair, I’m thankful for the great work on many on the YEA-SA 2011 committee and I’m more than confident that the incumbent Chair, Sarah Hughes, will lead the group to a very successful 2012.

Biomedical College Branch - South AustraliaThe College had another busy year in 2011, delivering a number of key events for members. Invited speakers included Prof Marcus Pandy (the University of Melbourne) who presented on muscle and joint function in human locomotion and Dr Ben Patritti (the South Australian Movement Analysis Centre and Flinders University) who presented on “rehabilitation robotics” and how this technology can assist the recovery of motor function in humans.

The annual Engineering and Physical Sciences in Medicine (EPSM) / Australian Biomedical Engineering Conference (ABEC) was held in Darwin in August 2011. The conference was convened and organised by the South Australian Chapters of the Society for Medical and Biological Engineering (SMBE), the College, and the Australasian College of Physical Sciences and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM). The conference was a great success and featured a one and a half day workshop on Biomedical Humanitarian Engineering, recognising the work that Biomedical Engineers conduct in this area in keeping with Engineers Australia’s Humanitarian Engineering theme for 2011.

In December the Branch will again join with the ACPSEM to host the 2011 Student Papers Night, an annual event to promote and highlight biomedical engineering student research.

The activities delivered this year would not have been possible without the enormous effort of the whole committee, namely Dr John Costi, Melissa Ryan, Diana Pham, Dr Anacleto Mernone and Adrian Richards. Their willingness to coordinate and organise events and be involved in the delivery made for another successful year.

2010 - 2011 Group and Society Annual Reports (cont)Information, Telecommunication and Electronic Engineering (ITEE) and Electrical Branch - South AustraliaDuring 2011 the Joint Technical Program (JTP) Committee ITEE and Electrical Branch met on monthly basis aiming for a stronger JTP reaching out a wider membership number during 2012.

The JTP Electrical and ITEE members are: Marcelo Botelho – Committee Chair (ITEE Branch Deputy Chair), Anthony Mew – Electrical Branch Chair (Committee secretary), Bruce Haines – ITEE committee member, Martyn Pearce – EESA Committee Member, Eric Yang – Committee Member (YEA & Student Representative), and Bill Malkin – Committee Member (ACS representative).

The Joint Technical Program CPD for 2011 was balanced and shared activities with IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics, the IET - Institute of Engineering & Technology, TSA – Telecommunications Society of Australia. 3 Site Visits, 8 technical presentations including student paper nigh and 3 Eminent Speakers. The ACS – Australia Computer Society provided 9 presentations organised by Bill Malkin. The committee also presented the IREE Prize in Microelectronics at University of Adelaide 7th Annual Ceremony, during May 2011.

Our goal and objective is to establish a wider membership audience during 2012, delivering high level CPD to local and remote membership.

2010 - 2011 Group and Society Annual Reports (cont)Electric Energy Society of Australia (EESA) The EESA Committee had nine meetings during the 2010/11 year. It was pleasing to have younger members David Bosnakis (Treasurer) and Jarrad Rosser as members of this Committee.

There was an active Technical Program with average attendance at the six seminars of 67 which covered topical areas of industrial development and safety-related issues: “Carbon Trading – Preparation and Participation” by Simon Kelley, AGL Energy Manager Energy Policy and Regulation; Site Visit to the Adelaide Desalination Plant construction project at Port Stanvac conducted by Mauro Farinola, Deputy Project Manager, S.A. Water; “Blue Print for Future Energy Sector” by Michael Bielinski, Executive Manager Strategic Marketing of Siemens Ltd. on projections of Australia’s future energy profile to the year 2050; “Nuclear Energy Safety” by Paul Bird of BAE Systems. Paul’s talk emphasised the difficulties of a future involving nuclear power; “Boosting Energy to our City – Adelaide’s Reinforcement Program” delivered by Hamish McCarter, Senior Manger Engineering of ElectraNet. This was a description of the major expansion of the high voltage electricity supply to the Adelaide CBD; “Arc Hazards – IAC Switchgear Developments and other Measures”. The two speakers were David Sweeting of Sweeting Consultants and

Spiro Mitropouls of Schneider Electric; and “SA Future Energy Delivery and Supply” delivered by Rainer Korte of ElectraNet Pty. Ltd.

EESA facilitated two training courses throughout the year, as follows: ”Reliability Standards for Grounding and Lightning Protection” – two seminars by Steve Greenfield, ERICO Northern America Utilities Sales Manager / Engineer; and “Switchgear Technology for Power Systems” delivered by Dr. Leslie Falkingham, Managing Director of U.K. based Vacuum Interrupters Ltd.

EESA continued with student awards at University of Adelaide, Uni SA and Regency TAFE. Frank Crisci, Bill Harrod and Martyn Pearce continued their support of the Australian Power Industry bursary program in the selection process for the bursary recipients and by attending networking events.

EESA gained two corporate members – ElectraNet Pty. Ltd and ETSA Utilities. The membership of the South Australian Chapter stood at 40 on 30 June 2010 and there are now 49 members.

Thanks to Jarrad Rosser, who has maintained the Chapter web page by updating the Technical Program and by loading the latest presentations from the SA seminars on the site.

Mechanical Branch The Mechanical Branch contributed to the Joint Technical Program (JTP) Mechanical with a series of presentations and site visits. The 2011 program included the following: 8th February – Site Visit to Stobie Pole Factory; 8th March – Advanced Composites Technologies for Heavy Lift Vehicles; 4th May – Site Visit to GMH Holden Plant; 10th May – Great Design Engineers – Great Achievers; 14th June – Robotics, Mechatronics and Beyond ( joint with JTP Electrical); 12th July – Site Visit Intercast Forge; 4th August – The New TransAdelaide Rollingstock ( joint with RTSA); 13th September – Site Visit UniSA electrical vehicles; 11th October – Site Visit to Desalination Plant; 8th November – Weapon Flutter Testing on Military Aircraft;

During the Sir Eric Neal Address evening, presentations were made to university student prize winners, as well as the winner of the Mannam Prize for Best Engineering Practice Report by a Mechanical Engineer seeking CPEng status. The winner of the Mannam Prize was Ms Aida Stabile MIEAust CPEng of UniSA.

The Mechanical Branch has been appreciative of input from Mr Ross Milton regarding his representation of South Australia on the Mechanical College Board, and their directions for the future.

The Mechanical Branch Committee ceased activity in October 2011 and South Australia Division Committee has provided support to facilitate the Annual Meeting to be held on 8th November 2011 and for a new committee to be elected. Details of the new Mechanical Branch Committee will be available online at www.engineersaustralia.org.au/sa after 8th November 2011, and keep an eye out for our Mechanical events section at South Australia Division/Events. I encourage you to come along and hear more great speakers in the forthcoming year, and enjoy the interesting site visits.

Structural BranchThe Structural Branch did not have the number of activities that were originally planned in 2011 and were less than 2010. With a call for new members for the committee the branch expects to host more events in 2012 building on the momentum of 2010.

Two presentations have been held to date in 2011.

On the 27th June 2011 a joint event was held with the Institution of Structural Engineers (UK). Professor John Carpenter presented “Lessons from Failure” examining what we can learn from failures to try and ensure that they don’t happen again. This was the second year we have hosted a joint presentation with the Institution of Structural Engineers and we hope to continue to do so.

On the 17 August 2011 the Structural Branch was privileged to host the Engineers Australia Structural College’s 2011 Eminent Speaker Professor Paul Grundy who presented “Disaster Risk Reduction and the Engineer” arguing that a more holistic approach is needed to design to minimise the impact of natural disasters and other extreme events.

Engineers Australia’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)Through our Strategic Plan and Code of Ethics, Engineers Australia has emphasised its commitment to "use our members' knowledge and skills for the benefit of the community to create engineering solutions for a sustainable future."

2011 is the Year of Humanitarian Engineering (YoHE). Our 2011 National President, Merv Lindsay FIEAust CPEng, is personally committed to making the YoHE meaningful and sustaining. We recognise that Indigenous Australians are at a significant disadvantage compared to non-Indigenous Australians and the gap has not decreased over the past decade or more. Australia has a Closing the Gap strategy that aims to reduce Indigenous disadvantage with respect to life expectancy, child mortality, access to early childhood education, educational achievement and employment outcomes.

A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is Engineers Australia's commitment and response to 'closing the gap'.
