Although David has performed many roles in musical theatre,he also has appeared in a number of plays including Run For Your Wife, Noises Off, Shadowlands, On Golden Pond and Mixed Salad’s criticallyacclaimed production Love Valour Compassion, where he performed the dual roles of brothers John and James.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Annie and Thoroughly Modern Millie. His productions of Pippin, Crazy For You and The Drowsy Chaperone won The Adelaide Theatre Guide’s Curtain Call Award for Best Musical in 2009, 2012 and 2013 respectively and his production of Legally Blonde received a best musical nominationin 2015. In addition to musicals he has also directed plays for The Adelaide Rep including Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and the highly acclaimed production of August: Osage County, which won best drama in the Curtain Call Awards in 2015.

The 1967 movie starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, Beatrice Lillie and Carol Channing has always been a long time favourite of mine. I was very fortunate to be in New York soon after the Broadway production opened in 2002 which starred Sutton Foster as Millie in her first Broadway lead role. There was a lot of hype about the discovery of a new star for Broadway musical theatre.

During production rehearsals, shortly before Thoroughly Modern Millie opened on Broadway,Sutton Foster was thrust “front and centre” into the spotlight replacing the actor who wasoriginally cast in the lead role of Millie Dillmount. Foster was an instant hit with critics andaudiences, as was the show.

I had such a great time watching that wonderful production not just because the show is soentertaining, but also you could tell Broadway had discovered another hugely talented leadperformer. You could feel it from the stage and from the audience. I remember the buzz in the foyer at interval and from the well-deserved standing ovation the audience gave the entire cast.Thoroughly Modern Millie is pure entertainment. It has it all - great music, great dancing andgreat comedy. It has heroes, heroines and villains and at its centre a story of love and romance and that love, the most precious of human emotions, will always find its way.

I was honoured to direct the South Australian premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2007 and feel privileged to be able to reconnect with this wonderful show and characters again for newaudiences with the Society.

Live theatre in Adelaide has never been more exciting or been of such high standard, particularly those productions mounted by amateur, non-professional organisations and community groups. Amateur companies have launched the careers of many talented professional performers andtheatre technicians. They employ, educate, entertain and provide a means of artistic expression and social comment, all of which contribute to a healthy vibrant society. It is so important for these companies to continue to exist and grow, which can only happen if they are supported byan audience. If you’re reading this, then you have probably bought this program and come to see this production. Thank you for supporting Adelaide theatre and the Performing Arts and helping this community and industry thrive. Come to the theatre and feed your soul!

I would like to dedicate this production to all those very special people who over the years have helped me along my musical theatre journey, I have been blessed to have known such wonderful people.

It’s 1922 and Kansas born Millie Dillmount has just arrived in New York City to start a new life.

Turn of the century conservative America is giving way to a new breed called “Moderns”. Society is changing and Millie wants to lead that change with her self-devised plan which is “so far ahead of its time it’s almost too bold, too daring, too new woman”.

Millie plans to find a job as the world’s fastest stenographer working for a wealthy boss and marry him. “Love has nothing to do with marriage for the modern woman!” Millie’s plan goes askew when she finds herself caught in the middle of a white slave trade scheme run by the nasty and sinister Mrs Meers.

With a little help from her new friends, Millie foils Meersie’s wicked plot to sell the beautiful Miss Dorothy into a life of slavery and at the same time discovers the true meaning of love.

This Tony Award winning musical, is based on the 1967 movie of the same name, which starred Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler-Moore, Carol Channing and Beatrice Lilly and which was also based on the 1956 British musical Chrysanthemum.

About the G&S Society

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of South Australia, has a long standing history in the theatrecommunity of Adelaide. Established in 1937, the Society has grown from very humble beginnings to be currently one of the most successful amateur theatre companies in Adelaide.

Although dedicated to promoting the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, the Society also regularly stages non-G&S operettas and musicals ranging from the time honoured standard of DieFledermaus, to Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. In 2008, the Society staged Les Misérables. The season was so successful that it lead to an encore season in January 2009. Similarly, the 2013 season of Oliver! lead to its return in 2014. The Society’s most ambitious production to date was Jesus Christ Superstar, staged at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 2010.

Over the years, the Society has been very lucky to have the support of gifted international professional performers, starting with Vincent McMurray (singing with both Australian and UK opera companies and JC Williamson), Richard Watson, who appeared with the D’Oyly Carte Company (the Operetta Company established by Gilbert & Sullivan in 1879), Kevin Miller (ex-Sadlers Wells/English National Opera), June Bronhill (also Sadlers Wells and International Opera Star), Kevin Mills (Sadlers Wells), Ghillian Sullivan, Guila Tiver, John Greene and most recently, Dennis Olsen – THE consummate G&S performer, Carolyn Ferrie, Peter Deane andJoanna McWaters.

Based in the suburb of Hindmarsh since 1983, the Society’s home is The Shed, a property lovingly developed by Society members. The Society has been the training ground of numerous young performers who have gone on to successful musical/operatic careers and has as one of its goals to support and nurture young performers as they start their performing lives. In contrast, the Society also has many long standing members, some involved in productions for well over 50 years. It is proud that the late Jack Higgs, a founding member, was continuously involved in the Society’s life for 76 years.

In 2016, the Society was excited to be involved in a joint venture with Co-Opera, staging The Mikado both in Adelaide and as a touring production. Further details of the 2017 season will be announced shortly.

When two down-on-their-luck Shakespearean actors touring the USA hear that an old lady is about to die leaving her fortune to two long-lost English nephews, they

resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and snaffle the cash.Problem: the nephews are actually nieces.

Don’t miss Therry’s final 2016 production, a hilarious story from the master of comedy and writer of Crazy for You, Fox on the Fairway, Lend Me a Tenor, The Beaux' Stratagem and Moon Over Buffalo …
