Creating your Note Cards

Source 1This is a direct quote card. It contains quotation marks to denote the fact that it is directly copied from the text and is, in fact, another persons words. These quotes do not mean that they are already in quotes from the article. This also means that you do not need to note anywhere else on the card that it is a quote card. If it is a quote card, it has quotes around the portion of the information you are using.Pg. 125Sara SpencerThis remains the same number for every piece of information that you pull from that source (i.e. book, website, magazine, newspaper, etc.) This needs to be on every card that you write down information on that comes from that source. New source, new number.

Source 1This would be a paraphrase card. There are no around anything. This is because these are your own words. This is the portion of the program where you take another persons ideas and information and put them into words and phrasing that you understand.Pg. 125

On the Back

Source 1This would be a paraphrase card. There are no around anything. This is because these are your own words. This is the portion of the program where you take another persons ideas and information and put them into words and phrasing that you understand.Pg. 125Sara Spencer

To ReviewEach new book, website, newspaper article, magazine article, interview, or other source of information gets a new source number. Each piece of information from that source gets labeled in the upper right hand corner with that sources number.Quote cards dont need to be labeled as quotes, the quotation marks label it as such.Dont forget the page numbers and the authors name, when appropriate.Use your resources to get the proper MLA citation of your source to place on your source card.Your name must be on the back of ALL your index cards.
