ALICE Safety Protocol Training Provided for All SASD Staff

    SOUDERTON TAKES SCHOOL SAFETY SERIOUSLY

The safety and security of our schools is of the utmost importance. We are continuously reviewing our safety plans and procedures and seek to employ the most current recommendations from experts in the field of school safety. In years past, our primary response to a security threat was to implement a school-wide “lockdown.” Today, however, it is the recommendation of the US Department of Education, International Association of Chiefs of Police, FEMA, and the FBI that schools adopt active plans which include decision making and options in the unlikely event of a school intruder situation. As an update to its existing security measures, Souderton Area School District has adopted ALICE, a nationally recognized school safety protocol. ALICE is a proactive set of responses to an active school intruder event, which empowers individuals to make informed decisions.

ALLCE stands for: Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate

Working in conjunction with local police departments, all District employees have attended, and will continue to attend, trainings on the five elements of ALICE. The trainings at our elementary schools as well as all other

schools has been tailored to be developmentally appropriate for the age of the students. This first phase of training for elementary level students will be conducted in their classrooms by their teachers with the goal of explaining ALICE and answering all student questions. Throughout the year, the District will progress through additional trainings with our students to ensure the safest possible environment. One of our many goals is to communicate very clearly with parents as our students progress through the phases of ALICE training.

Souderton Area School District Receives Safety GrantsThe District was the recipient of two recent grants to help improve the safety of our schools. The SASD was awarded $40,000 to add a second School Police Officer and another $25,000 for various school safety improvements. A third application is pending review with the state, and could pave the way for significant communication system improvements if fully funded.

Our ladies soccer team was victorious with an overtime win 1-0. The team was honored by our Board of School Directors in a public meeting and will also be the guest of State Representative Marcey Toepel at the Harrisburg State House in early January. Congratulations to our student athletes!

ENERGIZING MATH PRACTICE WITH FIRST IN MATHSouderton students in grades K-8 are experiencing game-style math practice of important math skills through First in Math. This unique mathematics teaching tool engages students to develop and sustain math skills by promoting permanent skill retention with the bonus of providing immediate feedback. First in Math delivers fluency in basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, while advancing higher-order thinking skills such as mental math, problem-solving, pattern sensing, reasoning and number sense through deep practice.

Souderton students use this program regularly as part of their classroom practice and have the opportunity to continue the practice at home. Research studies have demonstrated that this type of deep practice not only elevates test scores, but creates positive attitudes about math.

The competitive nature of the program provides motivation and sustains a high activity level. Students play games and earn virtual “stickers” that not only accrue personally, but also accrue to develop a classroom score that allows elementary buildings to compete with other elementary schools on both a local and national level. Souderton students have solved nearly 13 million problems and have earned over 4 million stickers. It is with tremendous pride that our elementary schools rank in the top 100 schools of the nation, with several schools ranking in the top 25. Congratulations Souderton students!

IVMS STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE IDEAS FOR INNOVATIVE MAIN STREET PROJECT

Indian Valley Middle School students had a unique opportunity to extend their classroom work to the local community. Students in Librarian Amanda Hahn’s “Innovation” class were challenged to come up with ideas that would enhance the customer experience at Souderton Borough’s planned North End Market. The ideas were presented to the public in a Shark Tank-type fashion on November 28th. Perhaps some of the students’ suggestions will come to life when the market opens! Construction began in December.

    SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE VISITS SAHS

District administrators, staff, and students had the privilege of meeting with Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture, Russell Redding, to describe the Souderton High School Pathway 360 Program and the unique opportunity it provides to our students to develop college and career readiness skills.

High school seniors, Abena Otu-Adum, Devon Kolumber and Serena Chung explained how this program enabled them to explore pathways of interest as well as provided them an opportunity to clearly reflect on their path ahead. Each student discussed their mentorships, courses, and the teachers that helped to guide them through this exploration. Assistant Principal Matt Haines presented highlights of the high school Greenhouse project.

Jane Natali from Souderton’s Food Service Department described how our district provides farm to school menu options for our students. Secretary Redding provided engaging questions and reflections to consider for future opportunities. His department plans to support us through additional connections and conversations which are already underway.

SUSHI IS ON THE MENU AT SOUDERTON

In an effort to create more food diversity and student options, the Food Service department at Souderton has partnered with local supplier, Sushi Tokyo of Lansdale, to provide fresh ala carte choices at Souderton Area High School during Monday lunch periods.

According to SAHS Food Service Manager, Pam Forster, the student reaction to the new sushi offerings has been incredible. “I had no idea how many kids eat sushi!” Quantities will be checked and menus changed to keep the sushi lovers happy.

Sushi Tokyo is also providing sushi options at both Indian Crest and Indian Valley Middle Schools one day a week.

SOUDERTON AREA HIGH SCHOOL’S WINTER WORKSHOP

Each year in late December, Souderton Area High School’s Technology Education Department hosts a Winter Workshop at the high school for all of the District’s first grade students. The high school students plan and mass produce the parts for a toy that they then help the first graders construct. The first grade students also engage in holiday-themed interactive activities with the high school students and teachers.

    E.M.CROUTHAMEL SETTLEDINTO NEW SPACES

With the opening of the new library at EMC Elementary School on November 26, the final interior spaces became ready for use by students and staff.

The facility opened two days after the rest of the District started classes in August, but the wait for the new facilities was well worth it for students and staff.

The new addition includes:- Second grade rooms (3)- ESL room- Library- Music/ band room- Reading offices and speech and language room- All-Purpose Room (APR includes Gym/ Cafeteria)

Exterior work on landscaping and playground will continue as weather permits.

FRANCONIA ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES HOLIDAYS -“A TIME TO GIVE THANKS!”

Franconia Elementary had much to be thankful for this holiday season. It is a special time to celebrate our friends, family, and our giving community, but the holidays cause a feeling of angst and uncertainty for some of families. Therefore, the Souderton community has rallied around our families in need. The Franconia student council’s mission is “together we can make a difference!” This mission emulates the partnership that has been built with our students, families, and local businesses.

Here are few examples of our generous and thoughtful community. This season Franconia’s student council collected almost 500 pounds of canned goods and supplies for the Keystone Opportunity Center. Franconia families collected hundreds of toys for an elementary school in Philadelphia.

Franconia families also received wonderful gifts. The Firely Foundation

and director Carla Allen provided 11 holiday meals to Franconia families. Over 25 families received holiday gifts donated by our parents, community members, the Franconia Police Department, staff members and district office. Each week during the school year, Zion Mennonite Church donates twenty plus “Bean Bags” which contain weekend meals for our students.

Souderton Area School District’s mission emphasizes the importance of cultivating a partnership with family and community, and by assuring a quality education for all students in a safe and nurturing environment.” This mission is evident in the hearts and actions of our students and families! It truly takes a village to raise a child!
