We meet the second Thursday of each month at 1:00 - either in the conference room or in a member's

The first meeting of the New Year brought 16 Circle members to the table to

critique Bazaar 2017. New ideas and ways to make the Big Day go smoother were

discussed. Then the fun part came, where members engaged in a "show and

tell" presentation of new craft projects. After lunch, decisions were made about

specific items to make; many new, some repeats, and the large hanging projects

sheets for Bazaar 2018 were begun.

We continue to ask your help in donations of specific items. This month and

continuing throughout the year, we would be most appreciative for books. Yes, we

always have tons of books to sell, however, it was noted in our start-up session

that we are lacking in certain categories. Here is our want list.

2. History, especially Local History Books

3. Fix-It-Books and Do-It-Yourself Books

4. Sports Books

5. Gardening Books

6. Nature Books

7. Seashell Books

8. Bird Guides (Backyard or Seashore)

Donations may be left on the back pew of the Chapel at any time. Our next

scheduled meetings are Wednesday, February 14 and Thursday, February 15 from

9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Consider dropping in at any time during these crafting ses-

sions.

On Monday January 8th, 31 men came out for our monthly meeting/dinner. There were some

very concerned men hoping they would be home in time for kickoff but they should know the action is

at the end which it was. We were treated to another fine meal of beef bourgeon, noodles, salad, rolls

and desert prepared by Jerome Pinckney and Ken Barnes. Thank you also to Larry Matthews an James

Hodges for helping with clean up again.

Our speaker for the evening was Chris Pinckney, yep you guessed it, Jerome’s son. Chris is a

retired Marine pilot who flew Marine One for four years for President's Clinton and Bush. Chris shared a

video, stories and experiences of his years of service. Thank you Chris.

We will meet next on Monday, February 5th and on Saturday February 10th at 7pm. We will have

our Valentines Dinner. Please look for the RSVP form in the Sunday bulletins.

My name is Tasha Ecklund and I am excited to accept the position of Director of Children’s Ministries. I have already begun meeting the children and parents in the con-gregation and look forward to meeting more of you. As a parent and a concerned member of the congregation, I would want to know a little about the person responsi-ble for Children’s Ministries, so I thought I would share just a bit. My family and I joined the church about a year and a half ago after moving from Georgia in January of 2016. At our Methodist church in Georgia, I was the Children’s Education Director for approximately 10 years. Last Fall I encouraged the youth group to sponsor a Trunk or Treat for the children and it was so much fun. While passing out treats and talking to the parents and children, I realized God was putting it on my heart to go back to work-ing with children.

I look forward to continuing the ministries in place and, hopefully, bringing some new ideas to the ministries. The first thing I am going to start is a Children’s Council where I can share ideas and concerns with parents and others in the congregation.

Dear WCUMC members,

Thank you for a faithful and Christ focused year. We have witnessed a year of

strong service and missions outreach. We have witnessed growth and new Baptisms.

We closed the year with celebration and worship.

Your Council has already met and begun 2018, actively drawing from what we

did last year and stepping out with big new plans for the upcoming year. Your gener-

ous tithes and offerings last year were very encouraging to us. With much prayer and

consideration, we decided to move forward on faith with perhaps the largest budget in

recent years, something over $700,000.

Let me tell you what we believe God is calling us to do. The most exciting item in

the budget is the hiring of an Associate Pastor. SPR Committee has developed a job

description and begun the search. You will be kept informed as we move ahead.

We approved a second-mile giving plan to raise approximately $50,000 to aug-

ment programs and further engage our Mission Statement. We will acquire an audio

and video system.

While there are some concerns about developer’s plans for nearby housing and

shopping being cancelled and about how the charitable giving tax changes will affect

us, your Council is excited about what is taking place at Wesleyan Chapel, and how

many of you are responding. It is showing!

Council, Finance, Staff Parish Relations, or Trustees committees.

STEPHEN MINISTRY NEWS

Since our Introductory presentations at our October worship services, Diane and I have been

working to make our first training class for Stephen Ministers a reality. Now, it is. We will begin this

first training course on Thursday, Jan 25, at 6:30 in the Youth Room of Lee Hall.

The course is 16 weeks long and will be completed on May 3. We hope and plan to Commission

these new Stephen Ministers at the end of May.

We are very excited to welcome our wonderful trainees, all of whom are active in our

church. Each has completed an application and an interview with Diane and me, so each understands

what this course entails. I think I can safely say that each person is very excited to begin this new jour-

ney with us. There are seven people who will become our newest Stephen Ministers in May. Each is a

person of faith and has a spirit of caring for others.

In the meantime, we ALREADY have 7 prepared Stephen Ministers in our congregation who are

ready to welcome a person who would like a caring person to talk with. Some of these Stephen Minis-

ters are active with Care-Receivers of their own, but we still have the capability of serving others.

The Stephen Ministers we currently have in our church are: Diane Croom, Stephen Leader Miriam Shipp, Stephen Leader Judy Jolly, Stephen Minister Sonya Spivey, Stephen Minister Kathy Daniels, Stephen Minister David Corley, Stephen Minister Jerome Pinckney, Stephen Minister

Thank you to each person above and to you, our caring congregation, for working with us to

make Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church a Stephen Ministry Congregation which supports and

encourages care for its people.

BRONZA KIGER PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

For many years, Bronza Kiger crocheted prayer shawls for Wesleyan Chapel’s Membership Care

group to deliver to church members. Some went to members and friends who were grieving.

Shawls were taken to people who were anticipating surgery or were recovering from surgery.

Shawls were also given to people who were just at a difficult place in their life’s journey.

After Bronza’s death, several ladies wanted to continue this ministry in Bronza’s memory.

The group meets at 10:00 on the 3rd Thursday of the month in the Prayer Room of the Chapel.

The group knits and/or crochets prayer shawls for about an hour to an hour and a half. There is

no program. The ladies use whatever pattern they enjoy.

If you knit or crochet, please join us. In February, our gathering will be on Thursday,

February 15.

PENNIES FOR HUNGER

2017 Final results are in, we collected 196,478 pennies or $1,964.78 which puts us over our goal of 2 1/4

miles by $64.70. Thank you to all who contributed to this ministry this year and to those who heeded my plea in

December and contributed so generously, our total collection for December was a whopping $364.16. Throughout

the year we were able to help the following organizations that help feed others; Community Holiday Assistance

Thanksgiving Food Boxes, Four C's Food Pantry, Mother Hubbard Cupboard, Pender County Cooks, Pender

County Meals on Wheels, and Rise Against Hunger. Thank you to all who contributed to this ministry for your gen-

erosity. Each received a donation of $400.00 except Pender County Cooks which received $300.00. We hope

you will continue to support us next year as we strive to reach the 2 1/2 mile mark.

2018 Goal: 2 1/2 miles of pennies, 211,200 pennies, $2,112.00 or $176..00 per month.

Next Collection Sunday February 25th

Penny Fact: Last year, each penny cost 1.5 cents to make -- about 50 percent more than its face

value -- and all the pennies the U.S. Mint issued last year cost it $46 million. It’s the 11th year the

cost to make a penny has been higher than its face value.

JOY Group (Just Older Youth)

Even the cold weather in January can't keep those "Just Older Youth" down, as we had

of our participants attend our first gathering of 2018. Thank you Becky Lewis for your interest-

ing and funny devotional on being old which included an excerpt from Raney by Clyde Edger-

ton. We played a variety of games and ended our time together with11 traveling to the Boat-

house Restaurant to enjoy some fellowship and a great meal.

If you are looking for a small group to participate in to become better acquainted with

fellow members then please join us on February 20th at 10:00 in Lee Hall for some fun and fel-

lowship as we play games and head to Highway 55 for a meal.

2017 WCUMC Holiday Assistance Program

We headed into this years Holiday Assistance Program with a bit of trepidation as we were unsure of

things due to all the changes but I think things went well. Thank you to all who volunteered to help this year

whether it was shopping, donating food and toys, packing toys, moving food and toys, making cookies, pack-

ing family food boxes, setting up the toy shop, or helping on the day of the Holiday Mart. I don't have a report

from All Saints yet on how things went, but here is what I know from our end. Assistance at Thanksgiving saw no changes to the program, we provided 26 families with a Thanksgiv-

ing meal food box and gift card for perishable items and a turkey.

Christmas is where we saw changes to how the program would operate, but some things stayed the

same as we continued to work with the Methodist Home for Children to provide clothing and toys for 20 chil-

dren and we continued to work with our Visiting Disciples to provide 35 gift bags to residents at the Davis Com-

munity. The Community Holiday Assistance Program is where we saw changes in order to better meet the

needs of all those who need assistance, but even then some things stayed the same. We still collected food for

the Christmas food boxes, and we still brought in toys/gifts for the children in our community. We contributed

388 items for the Holiday Mart distribution including 280 various toys/gifts, 13 bicycles and helmets, 6 skate-

boards and helmets, 4 laptops, 4 soccer goals, 2 fishing poles and tackle boxes, and 25 gift cards as well as

another 35 grocery store gift cards for the food boxes. All of the families I helped were very appreciative of the

help and enjoyed shopping for the gifts for their children. They were able to select three gifts for each child in

their family unless they got a higher priced item which then counted as two gifts.

This ministry is one that takes the participation of our entire church to accomplish. Thank you again to

all for your contributions in so many ways, which enabled us to touch the lives of many in our community and

make their holidays a little brighter. May God continue to bless you as you continue to be a blessing to others.

Good Samaritan House

Thank you again to all who held your donations. We are now receiving donations again, but are asking

for your help. In an effort to prevent another overload of donations we have developed some donation guide-

lines. Please review the guidelines listed below.

Donation Guidelines

THANK YOU for choosing the Good Samaritan House to receive your donations. We greatly appreciate

your donations to our ministry. We ask for your help by following these guidelines.

Please bring donations during normal hours of operation, Friday from 9am -12 noon and Saturday 9am-

3pm.

We accept gently used clothing and accessories, toys, books, linens, household items, etc. Please check

that items you are donating do not have stains, rips, holes, missing buttons or excessive wear, that all

items work and are not missing parts and have no cracks, chips, etc.

We do not accept most furniture items due to a lack of space, we can accommodate some small items if

space is available.

We do not accept the following items; TV's, computers, VCR tapes, cassette tapes and mattresses.

We do ask that if you are going to have a large amount of items to donate, more than 3 bags or boxes, that

you check with us prior to bringing the items to be sure that we have room to receive them.
