REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! New York February Workshop and Showcase/Open Mic – The New York chapter of Songsalive! has a consistent following for open mic every Tuesday at American Trash, deemed as one of the best in the city! Workshops are also held to form a communal environment for songwriters, where ideas can be heard, admired, and improved! Songsalive! Las Vegas February Workshop – At the Songsalive! Las Vegas Workshop on February 14th, we had a lovely turnout and deep conversation with 7 in attendance. We discussed many musical elements that make a song successful, and two attendees shared songs. We are excited to have Matt Moran coming next month to talk about marketing and promotion on March 13th at 6:30pm. Songsalive! Los Angeles February Workshop – The February Songsalive! Workshop bypassed Winter and went right to a sizzling hot event! We had an enthusiastic group in attendance and had some great songs presented for the Song Critique session. Guest Speakers Christiane Cargill Kinney and Gary Simonian, Entertainment lawyers with had a very informative talk on, "The Do's and Don'ts of Artistic Collaborations: A Legal Overview and Real-World Perspective". They were excellent speakers and brought handouts which were snapped up in no time. There was a big buzz in the room after we concluded. I think the groundhog was happy too! Songsalive! San Francisco March Showcase – Songalive! is running a San Francisco showcase series every first Thursday of the month, currently held at Velo Rouge Cafe in San Francisco, CA hosted by local artist Katie Garibaldi, which features Songsalive! members performing outstanding original acoustic music. The most recent showcase took place on March 1st where singer/songwriter Michael Gregory was the featured performer. Michael, who is also the coordinator for the Songsalive! Grass Valley chapter, played a full set of original tunes to a packed house.

CHAPTER NEWS

Songsalive! Orange County February Showcase – Songsalive Orange County celebrated 3 years of monthly singer-songwriter showcases by welcoming back two great performers, Travis King and Michael Vanags. They showed their talents to a small but eager crowd that ate it all up -- along with lots of cookies and coffee of course! Travis played a beautiful Martin guitar and offered a good selection of songs from his long and varied career, gigging all over Orange Country quite regularly. Michael followed up playing a gorgeous Taylor guitar. He said that every song he writes has a story -- and he told them to us between songs, making us laugh and often touching our hearts. Songsalive! Orange County February Workshop – For the first time in a while, Songsalive Orange County welcomed a guest speaker to our monthly Songwriting Workshop. The producer Joe Solo, who had originally discovered Macy Gray and has since worked with artists as diverse as the Black Eyed Peas, Cradle of Filth, and Michael Jackson came to speak. The audience was thrilled! Joe brought along a collection of songs he has worked on as a "producer for hire", and showed us "before and after" examples of what he actually did working on peoples' demo songs to spice them up to professional levels. But before all that, he took a listen to OUR demo songs and imparted his wisdom. Doug Hansen and Craig Smetana brought out the latest version of their patriotic anthem. Taking sort of the opposite tack, Rod O'Riley presented an acoustic punk song making fun of ambitious politicians. Peggy Glenn showed us the latest version of her song in celebration of grandpas everywhere, which she has been "workshopping" for a while now. Rick Willingham brought back a song that we had previously told him needed to be faster, harder, and in a country style -- and this time it was faster, harder, and in a country style! Dina Seymour was a first-time presenter, whose song was put together by a song-for-hire unit in Nashville. And our friend Kip Korley with a fun and friendly song. It was a terrific workshop all around.

REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! at the Durango Songwriters Expo – Songalive! was out in force at the Durango Songwriters Expo, in the Santa Ynez Valley CA. We had a table full of Songalive! info, our CD samplers, T-Shirts, and other merchandise. Durango is one of the premier songwriter conferences in the USA. It is limited to 200 attendees and is full of great songwriters, industry panels, listening sessions, hit songwriters, and amazing showcases. There is a great history of songwriters landing publishing deals or placing songs with labels / tv and film here. Each year several songwriters also get asked to co-write with top songwriters working in the industry. We were proud to be a sponsor of the event again and saw old friends and made many new ones. Songsalive! Long Island March Workshop – The Songsalive! Long Island chapter hosted a workshop on March 7th. There were 7 people who attended this workshop, and it was honestly the BEST workshop to date! Everyone got to present a song or poem that they’ve written and none of us wanted the night to end. This one new person, Josh, came out and presented a song and even played with a hand cast as he hurt himself snowboarding. He was a very talented songwriter, great voice, and a very nice person too. We all respected each others' songs and creativity and just had a great discussion about writing. This one girl, Olga, came out, and she presented a song in Russian. It was interesting hearing music spoken in Russian, but we all got the vibe of the song, and she was also very talented. Songsalive! Los Angeles March Workshop – The March Los Angeles Songsalive! Workshop rocked with Guest Speaker Elisabeth Howard - one of the top vocal coaches and teachers in the USA. We had a great turnout for her workshop on Vocals for Songwriters. Every songwriter had their voices open up and become more dynamic with just a few minutes of coaching from Elisabeth. Everyone left inspired and excited!

CHAPTER NEWS Songsalive! Chicago March Workshop – On March 10th, Songsalive! Chicago hosted a workshop. Two people shared two songs each, and we had an interesting discussion about each song and how the songwriters were inspired to write them. In the second half, Mary Lemanski talked about "Songwriting 101." She talked about basic musical theory terms, including intervals, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, and form. Next, she discussed the three different types of songs and how to approach songwriting. Finally, Mary gave tips on how to generate songwriting ideas and overcome writers block. Fun and informative workshop! Songsalive! Orange County March Showcase – Songsalive Orange County welcomed two very special guests direct from the UK -- and fresh off a premier engagement at the South by Southwest festival in Texas -- to our stage this month. Tony Moore is a seasoned musician who has worked tirelessly in the business since the 1970's (as he blushingly admitted), starting off in the band Iron Maiden and working his way through several other bands and several other hats: Venue manager, TV host, producer and more. And, of course, talented singer-songwriter. The amount of sound he coaxed out of a tiny Martin guitar blew everyone away, and he proved to be just as talented on keyboard. Ilona, meanwhile, is a brand new singing sensation that Tony only met last year -- but who has already drawn comparisons to Adele, Sheryl Crow, and many others. On our stage she proved to be worthy of every bit of hyperbole. We hope you didn't miss this one! Songsalive! Chicago March Showcase – On March 22nd, the Chicago chapter of Songsalive! held their bi-monthly showcase at the Heartland Cafe. We had three amazing songwriters perform. Sandy Andina played a fantastic set on acoustic guitar and dulcimer. She told wonderful stories with her original folk songs. Herbie Gaines played a lively set of funny, yet thought-provoking tunes. Everyone interacted with him and really seemed to enjoy his set. Last to perform was Dan Gillogly. He performed a set of blues/jazz/ rock songs, and people were blown away by his impressive keyboard skills. It was a highly entertaining showcase for all!

REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! Orange County March Showcase – Songsalive Orange County welcomed Jennifer Yeko from True Talent Management to our monthly songwriting workshop for March 2012. She and no less than 13 workshop participants brave a particularly nasty storm to come together at the Spires Restaurant in Westminster California. The participants were glad they did, as Jennifer turned out to have plenty to talk about, both on the functions of a manager for a performing artist, and also about the placement of music in TV shows and commercials. No less than four new faces were in the crowd, and a few of them even brought songs for review! Doug Hansen and Craig Smetana started things off with their bouncy collaboration which Doug both sang and performed -- on ukulele no less. Lucius Austin (whom we've not seen down this way in a while) followed up next with an electronic soul ballad. Kip Corley presented a slow and heart-felt acoustic country song. Kate Albright, whom again we haven't seen for a while, blew everyone away with a harrowing piano ballad about the plight of women under human trafficking. Peggy Glenn presented a pretty song about the fear of love, one that she had had recorded for her. Then new face Jack Ehlers presented an "Americana"-style song that he had co-written with Sam Morrison, who was also new. Finally, Sam presented his own song about how we treat (and how we think about) the homeless. The whole workshop ran way over schedule, and nobody complained -- we were all having a great time.

CHAPTER NEWS

Songsalive! Las Vegas March Workshop – Las Vegas had a wonderful treat. Matt Moran came to speak and give us lots of valuable information to those in attendance. He went over a roadmap for songwriters and bands to get their music heard with seven key points. His presentation was well received, and we had the opportunity to ask plenty of questions. We also listened to some songs from our members and gained insightful feedback. Bravo to those who came prepared. We are looking forward to next month with Rob Case from New Pants and Old Pants Publishing, April 17th at 6:30pm. Our venue might change, but we will do our best to keep Las Vegas going. Watch our Facebook link and web site for new event location updates.

Start a Chapter

We are always open to new chapters in areas untapped, where

songwriters and composers can gather, share their songs and learn at our

workshops and showcases. You get to be part of an international

community of volunteers who are working hard to build a great songwriting

industry – on a non-profit level (our organization is a non-profit 501 c.3)

public charity organization.

We are all volunteer songwriters so you are amongst similar like-minds,

and your contribution is invaluable. You may find that you have more

ideas than what we provide here which is great! We would like to expand

our non-profit organization to many different cities and countries.

The altruistic benefit for us is that we will know we have reached more

songwriters and provided opportunities for support, promotion and

exposure. In turn, we hope to generate more financial members so we can

keep doing what we are doing. By you running a chapter in your area, we

are able to assist and promote more songwriters and composers, as well

create awareness for larger global issues. Want to start a Chapter or

DISCUSSION

Songsalive! eNotes Now Accepting Gigs and Self-Promotion

In order to simplify our lists (and hence, simplify your lives!), we have decided to merge

our other Songchat discussion list (which was just for gig news

and self promotion)) into this list, eNotes. That means that e'll just have one weekly

discussion list (instead of 2), this list.

Yay, crack open the champagne! Less emails! More cool content, all in one weekly

digest!

You may have known that previously, Songchat was just for gig and self promotion

news plus songwriting discussion, and eNotes was just songwriting opportunities. Well,

we've decided to merge the two and the digest of posts gets released once a week, on

Mondays.

How this affects you:

As a poster: - You can now post self-promotion/gig news here (as well as important songwriting

opportunities)

- Don't post too much self-promotion. One a week max, as it's all in one digest.

- Add the location to your subject, as are all around the world. Make your subject clear,

relevant and newsworthy. Our moderators have the right to refuse your posts if not so.

Also, posts are moderated released only on Mondays, so make sure your post is time

sensitive. You can post anytime during the week, but it won't go out to everyone till

Monday afternoon, PST time.

As a reader: - scroll by subject/topic to see what is relevant for you.

- you will only get a discussion digest once a week.

We've recently created a Discussion page under

'Community' on our website.

Songchat Songwriter Discussions - Have your say, speak out, talk shop,

introduce yourself, find friends, asks, questions, interactions,

collaborations, promote yourself and your music... (Don't use this for song

critiques. See specific ones for that. Also, any Opportunities must be listed

under the BACKSTAGE FORUMS, not here.) Rules: Keep it clean or we'll

get mean. No slamming of any other member. Be kind.

Song Critique Discussion - Got a song that's ready for critique? Upload

the song to your music player on your profile and post the lyrics (we can

click on your name to go to your profile). Rules: Only upload your own

written songs and lyrics, and be sure to write your name as the songwriter.

[If you want a professional song critique go BACKSTAGE, choose Online

Song Critique, or come to a Workshop.]

Lyrics-Only Critique Discussion - Want some feedback on your song

lyrics? Post the lyrics here. Rules: Only upload your own written lyrics, and

be sure to write your name as the lyricist.

PRO MEMBER SPOTLIGHT We are all excited about Norm Strauss being chosen for the Songsalive! Pro Member Spotlight!!! You too could be featured by Songsalive! ... to 16,000+ subscribers on our mailing list, social networks and members. Join as a PRO MEMBER at www.songsalive.org/join.htm and find out more under Backstage. NORM STRAUSS Interview excerpt: "I have been doing this a long time and have seen a lot of changes in the studio. These days I record mostly digital and then run it through an analog to get the warmth. My earlier recordings were also really band based. These days the arrangements are more centered around the acoustic guitar and to me are more holistic sounding. It sounds weird but here I am, still trying to find my 'sound'. The latest CD sounds to me the most honest and organically grown CD I have ever done. " Read the CD Review by Songsalive! and Interview with Songsalive! in the Songsalive! “12 Track Mind, the new album by Songsalive!

Pro Member Norm Strauss’, is a rootsy, organic

and mesmerizing body of work. This Canadian

artist is someone to be watching, and I’ll tell you

why…

The featured song that was brought to our

attention first, “Play God”, is a masterful musical

production that captivated me within the first 20

seconds with its music and magical voice. The

guitar playing, the male vocal, the lyrics, the

mysterious flute, all entranced me. I was

mesmerized. Strauss is one talented artist!”
