Call for Computer Volunteers

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program

Community Computer Connections (CCC)

The goal of the CCC program is to providecomputers and printers free of charge to LongIsland individuals and families who would nototherwise be able to afford this equipment.Requests for computers are submitted byprofessional staff and approved by management.

This program is a partnership of RSVP and TheHealth & Welfare Council of L.I. (HWCLI). RSVP isa federally funded not-for profit volunteer program.HWCLI is a large not-for profit human servicesorganization that acts as an umbrella advocacy andeducation agency for many LI not-for-profitorganizations.

Donations of used computers and associatedequipment are solicited and received fromcorporations and individuals. Volunteers transport, refurbish, and install computers in the homes ofclient families. Funds for purchasing computerparts are obtained by donations dedicated to thiseffort.

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers are needed in Nassau and Suffolkcounties to help in all aspects of this program. There is no specific time commitment required. Each ‘assignment’ is on an as-available/as-neededbasis. Volunteers of all ages are needed to provideassistance in the following categories:

(1) Technical Volunteers

Background in PC hardware and software, ability toassess hardware complement and functionalstatus of each donated item. The volunteerreformats the hard drive, and installs (a) hardwareupgrades (e.g., modems, memory) provided byCCC via a special donation fund; (b) an authorizedMicrosoft operating system; and (c) a standardsoftware suite. This work is done in the volunteer’shome.(2) Transporters/Installers

Transport computers (via personal vehicle) fromdonors to Technical Volunteers, and fromTechnical Volunteers to recipient clients’ homes orto a facility of a CCC cooperating-agency. In mostcases, when the computer is delivered to aclient’s home, the volunteer “hooks up” theequipment, introduces the client to the installedsoftware, and - when needed - provides a brieftutorial session on PC operation basics.

(3) Follow-up Tutoring

People with varying levels of computer familiarityor expertise are required to help client recipientsattain “computer literacy.” At the simplest level, tutoring can include introduction to hardware(keyboard, mouse, etc.), including computer turn-on, as well as instruction in basic Windowsfunctions. More advanced tutoring includes e-mail, Internet, and/or word processing instruction.

Our December 13 meeting was held at Mike’sRigatoni Bistro, in Peoria. Arrangements for thismeeting were made by Ed Miller.

The meeting was attended by nine members andtheir guests.

Our guest speaker was Parent Chapter President,Barbara Nilsen, who was in the Phoenix area at thetime attending a seminar and was able to join us forour luncheon. For those of us who had worked withBarbara in the past, it was a pleasure to see herand reminisce; for those who did not know herbefore today, it was great to finally meet her.

Discussions centered around a number of topics ofinterest, including the progress being made on theGrumman Club Web Page. A number of questionswere raised about eligibility for the Grumman ClubScholarship Program.

A reminder: those of us who have an e-mailaddress and would like to be added to the Club’s e-mail listing, should contact the Parent Chapter [email protected]. Also, those who are willing to viewthe Newsletter on the Club’s website, in lieu ofreceiving a hard copy, should contact the ParentChapter at [email protected].

We hope Barbara enjoyed her stay in the GrandCanyon State, liked our winter weather, and wasable to do a little sightseeing. Our Chapter extendsto her a sincere welcome on any future visit.

As a reminder for those who have not yet paid their2008 membership Dues: please provide a $10check, payable to the “Grumman Retiree Club,” toEd Miller .

We also welcome Phyllis Licari, who had worked in“Classified Document Control” at Grumman some

Taking the Wind Out of Our Sails

In the early 1970s, I was project leader of the Energy Systems Group, where we conducted studies of the nation’s potentialenergy problem, and began evaluating alternative renewable energy systems. Among the energy-related projects the groupworked on were solar energy applications (both ground and space-based), energy conservation, and wind energy conversionsystems.

The paucity of wind generator information available at that time prompted us to build a 25 foot diameter test rotor based on aconcept called the “sailwing,” which incorporated fabric-covered blades. To evaluate the unit, we mounted the rotor on a poleattached to a flatbed truck and tested it at varying speeds on the Bethpage runway across from Plant 5. Clearly, the rotor/truckcombo could readily be observed by the executives in Plant 5.

One day, I received a phone call from George Skurla, then president of Grumman, who remarked that he was getting tired ofbeing asked by his associates “when was the thing going to take off?” George asked if we could move the unit out of view ofPlant 5 without impairing our test program. Needless to say, I readily complied and we moved the testing to the runway behindPlant 2.

This initial excursion into wind generators led to a more robust design called the Windstream 25, that was tested in numerouslocations in the U.S. including New York, Colorado, Iowa, Wyoming, Georgia, Alaska, and Hawaii.

LONG ISLAND MAN RECALLS ROLE AS A U.S. COUNTERSPY

At a crowded engineering conference at the Holiday Manor in Hicksville, 32 years ago, Bill Van Zwienen found himselfbeside a stranger wearing a fur-lined coat and a Tyrolean hat with the brim curled back. His name was Valery Markelov, aRussian translator for the United Nations who lived in Manhattan.

Speaking quietly through a thick accent, Markelov peppered the Grumman engineer with questions that seemed likeordinary small talk. What projects did Van Zwienen work on at Grumman? What responsibilities did he have?

“He said he liked flying,” Van Zwienen recalled. “I just agreed with him, didn’t ask him why. He asked me in short order if Iworked on the F-14. Right away I said in my mind, ‘This guy’s looking for information he shouldn’t have.”

Later, Van Zwienen contacted authorities, spawning a two-year investigation into Markelov, who federal agents came tobelieve was trying to steal U.S. military secrets. It also began Van Zwienen’s unlikely role as a counterspy.

The two met at bars and diners across Long Island, swapping details about the F-14 for cash. Markelov pressed VanZwienen for “marked” documents and urged him to transfer to the company’s library to obtain them more easily.

Before each meeting, Van Zwienen strategized with investigators. After the meetings, he wrote detailed accounts for theinvestigators, from his rented room in Bellmore.

Their association lasted 17 months, until it ended as improbably as it began on Valentine’s Day, 1972, (when the Russianspy was arrested.)

“I didn’t ask for this responsibility, but I felt like I had an obligation to accept it,” said Van Zwienen, 71, whose name hasnever been linked to the investigation. After three decades of silence, the time felt right to reveal his long-kept secret. “I feltit was a story which was not complete,” he said. “It was sort of bugging me that I had it inside of myself. It was anunfinished story that I wanted to get out in the open. “Time goes by, and the next thing you know 30 years have passed. Idon’t want money or credit. I don’t consider myself a hero. It was just a part of my life that no one has ever known.”(Originally printed in Newsday in 2002. It recounts true events that happened starting in 1970.)

The Christmas party meeting at Point Mugu had 56attendees – twenty two more than our average.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge ofAllegiance led by Sal Panico, followed by a prayeroffered by John Torkelsen in which he askedblessings for our servicemen and women who areprotecting our freedoms all over the world. He alsoasked for comfort for our own members andfamilies who could not attend the meeting becauseof illness. These included Homer Evans, Don Frey,Joachim Dietzsch, Ken Kettenacker, Jim Ashman, and Marty Lachow.Doris Tomlinson, wife of member Art Tomlinson, isrecovering miraculously from her severe stroke

three weeks ago. Art says she has use of her leftarm again and is speaking and even walking upstairs at Northridge Hospital. The doctors andnurses are amazed. Art thanks us for our prayers, which he says, made all the difference.

President Fred Syrett introduced Corporal EphraimChavez, of the U.S. Marine Corps, who collectedour Toys for Tots contributions during the meeting. The Corporal reported on the program and thankedus for our cooperation.
