This quote claims that people are ignorant about the causes

    of Somalian piracy.

The west is completely ignoring the

basis for piracy in Somalia. The

pirates are in the water because

    there is a nationwide complaint

about the illegal mass fishing going

on in Somali waters. And nuclear

toxic waste is illegally being dumped

on our shores. People in Somalia

    know about this

    INTERVIEW WITH

    GUARDIAN

Massive western companies would come to Somalia

and dump nuclear waste containers on the shorelines

so these pirates initially went into the ocean to make

them pay for that sort of thing so they just took

everything for ransom. That actually helped us clear

    our environment

Italian weekly magazine Famiglia Cristiana had reported that, in

1997, UNEP undertook an extensive fact-finding field mission along

the Somali coasts7. The journalists reported that they had obtained a

copy of the assessment report according to which UNEPs mission

confirmed the toxic waste dumping along the Somali coast.

after the Tsunami disaster which hit also the Somali coast in December 2004 along with a dozen of other countries, the sea stirred up rotting

containers and leaking drums full of toxic substances that were previously dumped off the coast. The team had found 15 sealed containers

    washed ashore by the Tsunami

UNEP Somalias coastline has been used as a dumping ground for other countries nuclear and hazardous wastes for many years as a result

of the long civil war and, thus, the inability of the authorities to police shipments or handle the wastes

Moreover, in an official hearing in 2006, an Italian

Minister told the aforementioned special parliamentary

commission that numerous elements indicate the

involvement in the previously mentioned [toxic

waste and army] traffic of European and non-European countries as well as the Mafia and

other individuals including a well known broker

who is also involved in a series of issues relatedto Somalia

In addition, the article states that the

    chemicals cause deformities in certain

    animals.

Somalia relies heavily on fishing and on its

    domestic breeding of animals.

The Chemicals have caused damage to the

    animals.

    Hence, Somalian fisherman have armed

themselves in order to fight the

    contamination.

As a result, if the evidence is correct than we

may actually be ignorant as we have a

perception of Somalian pirates as savageextremists.

    If the evidence provided above

is true than Somalian pirates do have a

rational reason for attacking ships and hence

the general mainstream view of Somalian

    pirates may be wrong.

People could turn into pirates for other

reasons such as poverty from the long

    Somalia civil war
