Project Vegetableproduction with „green packages“ for small farmers and women‘s associations in the periurban area of Bamako
MALI

„Green packages“ help small farmers to produce more food with less costs. The two types of „green packages“are a combination of :1) Solar waterpumping systems (Type 1 subm.pumps, Type 2 solar motor for handpumps) (CC) comb.2) Dripirrigation* and/or by hand to use precious water more sustainably (CC)3) Organic agriculture to produce more vegetables with less external input (fuel, chem.fertilizers) (CC) 4) Organic agriculture to increase soilfertility and carbonstorage (CC) 5) planning, trainings, monitoring, marketing

47 new periurban „green package“ vegetable perimeters
Food (Vegetable and fruit) production and incomegeneration for totally 60 small farmers- / women‘s associations with perimeters of 1-2 Ha (totally up to 6000 smallfarmer families) equipped with and trained for „green foodproduction“ in the periurban agricultural belts of Bamako, Kayes, Segou and Sikasso to produce (fgp: organic) vegetables and fruit for urban markets in Mali (2 million inhabitants in Bamako)

With this mobile pumpunit (inv 5400 U$) the womens association with 122 members in Dona (near the city of Segou, Mali) made a net profit of 32‘000 U$ in the first year of production 2011
Solarpumping in combi-nation with dripirrigation improves considerably the use of precious water in the Sahel, Torokoro
Water is better life… improved livelihood less poverty with solar energy (less pro-ductioncosts, no CO2 emissions, multiple use of solar modules, Syn, near Djenne

Project 3 HAITI Solarpumping and Solar watertreatmentSolarpump Pilotproject (South-South-Transfer/Capacitybuilding Project Mali > Haiti)
Phase 1 Pilot- and Testphase Sept 2011 – April 2012
1) Tests and installation of 10 recently developed swiss solar motors for handpumps Type 2 * (see fotos below)
2) Training of local technicians for installation, maintenance and repairs3) Joint development of a management module for waterpoints with solar pumps with the haitian
national waterauthorities DINEPA (Direction Nationale pour l‘Eau et l‘Assainissement)
Phase 2 EXTENSION>> integrated into Project 2 Extension Project „green packages“ (included 70 x Type 2 pumps)
First tests of solar driven motor for Mark II handpumps Nov 11 in Leogane, Haiti Fotos FW
Planned Pilotproject 3 Haiti 2012 : 20 solar waterkiosks with solarpumps and solar watertreatment unitsCrucial problem in Haiti : huge lack of good quality water (drinking water) for the populations. Water has to be treated nearly everywhere to become drinking water. There is an urgent need for hundreds of watertreatment units !>> still high risk of cholera…!!
Such urgently needed solar watertreatment units can be integrated into existing and new waterkiosks. These help
to diminish the very expensive and ongoing watertrucking and improve waterdelivery with precious drinking-water from boreholes considerably.
Wirz Solar Gmbh is presently planning a project for the installation (and evtl. operating) of 20 waterkiosks in
Haiti. The amount for the initial investment is approxmatively CHF 1‘200‘000. And we are looking for financial partners…
7 solar watertreatment units (ultrafiltration) have already been installed 2010 in existing and/or new waterkiosks. They sell drinkingwater in haitian periurban areas as e.g. Cabaret, Jacmel .
The planned project foresees 20 new solar waterkiosks preferably in urban locations with no electrical grid. These waterkiosks may also provide other services apart from drinkingwater (e.g. batteriecharging etc)
A prototype businessplan has still to be adapted to the Haitian situation, discussion of financing ongoing
Solar watertreatment unit in Haiti
Summary :Three Projects with great potential to be extended and multiplied in many periurban and urban areas :
• “green packages“ for green agricultural foodproduction (fruit and vegetables = „green gold“, example Mali)
• solar waterkiosks for drinkingwater (example Haiti)Wirz Solar Gmbh / Solsuisse Mali and ERA, Geneva have a lot of experience and a network of partners to
implement and monitor such projects ! Please contact us for further discussions at [email protected] !
