Indian renewable energy Development: Pastand present
Backed by the government from the very beginning, India became the first
country in the world to establish a ministry of non-conventional energyresources back in the 1980s. It was then that the Ministry of New andRenewable Energy was set up. (a) Wind power was the first to develop inIndia that made the use of wind current to generate electricity back in the1990s. And the development of this particular renewable resource hasdistinctly increased in the past few years. In fact, India is the country that is
has become the fourth largest installed wind – power capacity in the world. The installed wind power capacity of India reached a total of 26,769.05 MWin the year 2016, March 31. Wind energy being the fastest growingrenewable energy sector in India, accounts for 66% of the total installedpower capacity among all the renewable energy sources. Also, India aims togenerate a gigantic amount of electricity, approximately, 60,000 MW, fromwind energy, by the year 2022.

(b) India is an ideal set up to generate solar power owing to its high
population and the fact that it receives appreciable amount of solarinsolation (is the power of sunlight received by the Earth per unit area on ahorizontal surface). India receives a total of 300 sunny days, annually. So,the total solar power generation in a year is more than the energy outputof fossil fuels. Initially, India did not have electrical grid for generatingelectricity from solar energy but in the year 2013, India has installed a grid-
connected solar PV capacity of 1.7 GW. Solar energy was initially used forrunning water pumps which otherwise used diesel for power. Now, solarenergy can support giving power to an entire house. Solar energy in India aims to generate an enormous amount of electricity, approximately, 20 GW,by the year 2020.

Welspun Renewables is a leading wind and solar Independent Power
Producer (IPP) in India. The power capacity that Welspun Renewables hasoperationally reached is a total of 680 MW. Welspun Renewables receivesinternational investments, globally, for the funding of their renewable
energy projects. The government is also actively contributing to adoptrenewable energy resources by specifying a 175 GW target of renewableenergy development. The 151 MW(DC) solar project helmed by Welspun
Renewables in Neemuch, was one of the largest solar plants of the world atthe time of its commencement. In fact all of Welspun Renewables’ powerplants rank among the highest power generating projects in the country.
