HISTORY OF THE SOLAR DECATHLON
The So lar Decath lon launched in 20 02 and has occur red b iennia l l y s ince 20 05.
The 2017 event was he ld in Denver, Co lorado, and inc luded teams f rom U.S . and
internat iona l schoo ls .
The U.S . Depar tment of Energy cons ider s the So lar Decath lon one of i t s mos t success fu l
out reach ef for t s . The event br ings awareness to c lean energy and sus ta inab i l i t y top ic s
in an engaging, rea l -wor ld manner. I t a l so emphas izes the comfor t and cos t sav ings
as soc iated wi th an ef f i c ient home.
The event has s ince expanded out s ide the U.S . w i th compet i t ions in Europe, China,
L at in Amer ica and the Middle Eas t .
To be cons idered for the compet i t ion, co l lege teams of facu l t y member s and s tudent s
submit proposa ls and p lans . These are eva luated by engineer s , s c ient i s t s and bui ld ing
exper t s , and spec i f i c c r i te r ia mus t be met to qua l i f y. The proposa ls are rated on four
ab i l i t i e s : to des ign and bui ld an ent i re l y so lar-powered house; to ra i se funds; to suppor t
the pro jec t through integrated cur r i cu la; and to as semble a team to execute the bui ld .
Scor ing in these four areas i s combined wi th the eva luat ions of the profes s iona l board
to determine which teams are asked to par t i c ipate.

MARKET STRATEGY
A s par t of the compet i t ion, teams determined a target market for the i r house. UC Dav is ’ Our H 2Ouse (pronounced
“Our House”) targeted Sacramento (urban) and Yo lo (rura l ) count ies , t wo areas ver y focused on increas ing water
and energy ef f i c ienc y.
In addi t ion, the home’s adaptab le f loor p lan and mix of indus t r ia l and modern rus t i c s t y les added to i t s market
appea l . I t was intent iona l l y des igned to be an eco -f r iend ly and af fordab le home.
Designing and buildingTeams t yp ica l l y spend t wo year s des igning and bui ld ing homes! E x tens i ve
tes t ing goes into the cons t ruc t ion to ensure that i t max imizes ef f i c ienc ies .
So lar energy mus t be the so le source of energy, ab le to power l ight ing,
run app l iances , mainta in temperatures and much more.

INSP IRAT IONS AND DES IGN PH ILOSOPHY
Our H2Ouse is a zero net energy (ZNE) house designed
for drought condit ions, something many Californians
encounter. Our H 2Ouse can cut t yp ica l - res idence
water use in ha l f whi le mainta in ing comfor t and
af fordab i l i t y.
The team cited the UC Davis West Vil lage apartment
complex, the largest planned ZNE community in
the U.S., as a major inspiration. They also looked
at the 2015 UC Davis Solar Decathlon entry,
the “Aggie Sol” project.
The UC Dav is team de l i vered a whole -house
concept that he lps res ident s form bet ter l i v ing
hab i t s , which reduces unnecessar y water use.
The des ign makes i t easier for homeowners to cut
their water consumption through moni tor ing, user
feedback and water rec lamat ion.

J ELD -WEN donated windows, pat io
door s and inter io r door s to the UC
Dav is team, inc lud ing:
• EpicVue® clad-wood casement windows
• EpicVue clad-wood awning windows
• EpicVue clad-wood sliding door
• EpicVue clad-wood outswing patio door
• MODA™ Collection solid core interior doors
Choos ing the mos t energy- ef f i c ient

WINDOWS
They chose Ep icVue windows for the i r energy - ef f i c ient
at t r ibutes such as Low- E 366 g las s and the i r s imple,
e legant des ign. The Ep icVue produc t s a l so made the inter io r
and ex ter io r connec t ion seamless . Th is gave the house the
i l lus ion of be ing b igger.
The windows a lso had favorab le so lar heat ga in coef f i c ient
(SHGC) number s . The SHGC is the f rac t ion of inc ident
so lar rad iat ion admit ted through a w indow, both d i rec t l y
t ransmit ted and absorbed then subsequent l y re leased inward.
The number ranges bet ween zero and one; the smal le r the
number, the les s so lar heat t ransmit ted.
The windows a lso met U -fac tor va lues . U -fac tor i s the
amount of heat f low through a produc t . The lower the
number, the more energy ef f i c ient the produc t i s .
The casement and awning windows c i rcu late a i r
throughout the space. Th is reduces the need for other
coo l ing equipment .
INTER IOR DOORS
The MODA Col lec t ion door s used featured three so l id pane ls
pr imed and ready to pa int . MODA door s feature a P roCore ®
So l id Core, which reduces sound t ransmis s ion by up to 50
percent compared to a ho l low door. Th is core a l so he lps
res i s t the dent s and d ings of normal usage. The team c i ted
the weight of the MODA door s as another fac tor in the i r
se lec t ion. A heav ier door i s of ten cons idered to be of h igher
qua l i t y. The team chose Swiss Cof fee , an of f-whi te co lor,
to f in i sh the inter io r door s .
EXTER IOR DOORS
The team was de l ighted wi th how the ex ter io r door s c leanly
integrated into the bui ld ing enve lope. Team member Geof f rey
Mangalam, s tudent pro jec t manager, commented, “The door s
of fer a ver y s leek and modern appearance, which contras t s
ver y n ice l y w i th the ex ter io r rus t i c wood accent s .”

Addressing efficiencyOur H2Ouse unique ly addres sed water and energy ef f i c ienc y. Not
only d id the UC Dav is team cons ider the energy ef f i c ienc y of
the ac tua l produc t s , they a l so wanted to use produc t s that were
ef f i c ient l y manufac tured.
The team used a new wal l s y s tem ca l led BamCore , featur ing pane ls
made in a low embodied energy process us ing U.S . t imber bamboo.
These panels don’t require wood studs, which reduces thermal bridging.
Another cha l lenge was the reduc t ion of a i r l eakage, of ten the
main source of energy inef f i c ienc y, into and out of the house. The
team used AeroBarr ier™ and Aeroseal ® to p lug t iny seams, c rack s
and ho les that would a l low for condi t ioned a i r l eakage and /or
uncondi t ioned a i r inf i l t rat ion.
The team employed the Sunverge ® energy p lat form, featur ing a
combined so lar inver ter and bat ter y as we l l as a smar t and adaptab le
energy management s y s tem. Th is he lped opt imize energy produc t ion
and usage by determin ing gr id - and home - leve l ac t i v i t y and demand.
The team a lso augmented the w indows wi th a so lar- intu i t i ve,
thermochromic coat ing f rom RavenWindow ®. I t automat ica l l y t int s
to prevent excess heat ga in.
Intermediate bulk conta iner s co l lec t grey water (re lat i ve l y c lean was te
water) and ra inwater. I t ’s then reusab le, e l iminat ing the need for
ex ter io r potab le water usage.
The house a l so features dua l energy and water moni tor s of a l l
ind iv idua l e lec t r i ca l c i rcu i t s and hot and co ld water l ines . Occupant s
have access to th is usage data feedback so they can bet ter manage
usage and reduce i t where necessar y.

Sustainability mattersAt JELD -WEN, we are commit ted to bui ld ing windows, door s and component s in a manner
that promotes env i ronmenta l s tewardship. In 1960, ef f i c ient resource use such as rec yc l ing
and mater ia l reuse made sense because i t was good bus iness . We began the use of f inger-
jo int and engineered wood component s because i t produced a bet ter produc t .
We be l ieve that a hea l thy env i ronment and hea l thy bus iness prac t i ces go hand in hand.
We are dr i ven by a phi losophy to be good s tewards , and do th is by des igning long - las t ing,
energy - sav ing windows and door s . Our manufac tur ing process uses rec yc led was te mater ia l s .
We a lso manufac ture produc t s c lose to market s to min imize fue l consumpt ion and greenhouse
gas emis s ions .
We were ver y happy to work w i th UC Dav is on th is pro jec t and hope that i t prov ides an
atmosphere of learn ing around the many oppor tuni t ie s for ef f i c ient use of resources .
