Hands on Learning
In Kitah Alef when we say "hands on learning" we truly mean hands on learning! We began the week reviewing the names of the Hebrew months, studying about the cycle of the Jewish year, and understanding how our calendar works. All this information gave us the perfect opportunity to get our hands "dirty" and prepare a special challah agulah (round challah) in honor of Rosh Hashana. Then the question was: “What should we do with the extra flour?". Well the answer came in very quickly- “We practice our letters in cursive!". This week we learned letter gimmel, and the children did a fantastic job practicing proper letter formation and writing direction in Hebrew. The students were also exposed to beauty and significance of the different simanin (symbolic food) we eat on Rosh Hashana. We read books, made projects, practiced reciting brachot, discussed the yehi ratzons, and finished each day enjoying the textures and delicious flavors of these sweet omens, wishing that all our requests be answered favorably for a sweet, meaningful, and happy New Year.

Parshat Ki Tavo OVERVIEW: Parshat Ki Tavo (Devarim Ch:26 – 29:8) When Bnei Yisrael (the Children of Israel) dwell in the Land of Israel, its first fruits are to be taken to the Temple and given to the Kohen in a ceremony expressing recognition that it is Hashem who guides the history of the Jewish People throughout all ages. (Quotations from this passage form the central parts of the Haggadah that we read at the Passover Seder.) On the last day of Pesach of the fourth and seventh years of the seven-year shemitta cycle, a person must recite a disclosure stating that he has indeed distributed the tithes to the appropriate people in the prescribed manner. With this mitzvah Moshe concludes the commandments that Hashem has told him to give to the Jewish People. Moshe exhorts them to walk in Hashem's ways, because they are set aside as a treasured people to Hashem. When Bnei Yisrael cross the Jordan River they are to make a new commitment to the Torah. Huge stones are to be erected and the Torah is to be written on them in the world's seventy primary languages, after which they are to be covered over with a thin layer of plaster. Half the tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim and half on Mount Eval, and the Levites will stand in a valley between the two mountains. There the Levites will recite 12 commandments and all the people will answer "Amen" to the blessings and the curses. Moshe then details the blessings that will be bestowed upon Bnei Yisrael. These blessings are both physical and spiritual. However if the Jewish People do not keep the Torah, Moshe details a chilling picture of destruction, resulting in exile and wandering among the nations which so starkly and prophetically characterize our Exile these 2,000 years. (C) 2016 Ohr Somayach International
DRASHA: The warnings to the Jewish people as contained in this week’s Torah readings are awesome (how I despise that word as currently used in popular vernacular!) in their ferocity and cruelty. Unfortunately, they are also unerringly truthful and accurate. Everything in its minutest detail did befall us, not only over the long millennia of our existence as a people but as an accurate description of our fate in the last century. The eternal question that nags at our very being as a people is “why?” or perhaps better still “why us?” Though the Torah implicitly and explicitly puts the onus for all of this on the obstinacy and waywardness of the sinful behavior of the Jewish people, Jews throughout the ages have found it difficult to fit this punishment to the crime. Even in Second Temple times already, the rabbis were hard pressed to determine the cause of the Temple’s destruction and resorted to explaining it in terms of baseless internal feuds and hatreds. As destructive as these traits undoubtedly are, they are difficult to pin down and identify as part of a national policy of a society of millions of individuals. We are therefore left to deal with the issues purely as a matter of faith and acceptance. G-d’s judgment and policies are correct, exquisitely so, but completely beyond human understanding and rationalization. Though the Torah demands rational thought and analysis in interpreting its laws and value system, in essence it is obvious that it must be dealt with, in its authority and influence over human events, more as a matter of Heavenly understanding than human intelligence. We have the great example of Rabi Akiva, who saw in the destruction of the Temple and the terrible scenes of cruelty
that the Romans wrought against the Jews, the seeds of rebirth and resilience of the Jewish people. It is one of the mysteries of nature that destruction is always part of rejuvenation and renewal. The raging and most destructive forest fire somehow preserves and guarantees the growth of a new, greater and more verdant forest. There is an interesting interpretation of the well-known verse in Kohelet: “A generation departs and a generation arrives and the earth survives forever.” Aside from the usual understanding of the verse in regard to human mortality and the unchanging state of the world and its challenges, the verse can be viewed as teaching us another lesson. Namely, that it is only because of the departure of one generation and the consequent renewal caused by the arrival of another generation that the world is able to survive and remain vital. Now this begs the question as to why G-d created nature and the world in such a pattern. But, at least to me, it does signify the eternal path of the Jewish people through history as being in line with nature’s pattern of eternity itself. Just as nature with its very destructive forces nevertheless guarantees the eternity of the world, this parsha guarantees the survival of the Jewish people. Shabbat Shalom (C) 2016 Rabbi Berel Wein

ART NEWS
All of our art students are working hard on ceramic projects they are bringing home for the holidays. Please come visit our
fabulous art program if you are at the school.
Kindergarten made ceramic honey spoons
First grade made beehive honey jars
Second grade made pomegranate bowls
Third grade made hollow apples with lids and spoons.
Fourth grade made three dimensional pomegranate honey holders with spoons
Fifth grade made a choice of date platters or tzedaka boxes .
All glazes are non toxic and food safe, but best to wash the pieces by hand rather than the dishwasher. All pieces are fired by
the art teacher, Avril Butbul, in the school kiln so don't need to be toiveled.
Board Members Immersed in Art At the recent Board of Directors meeting, a field trip was taken when our Board went upstairs and was hosted by our Art Teacher, Avril Butbul. This immersive moment of seeing so many Rosh Hashanah projects nearing completion, feeling the warmth of the kiln ready for firing, the well organized set up which spurs creativity in our children gave our lay leaders the inspiration to work even harder to advance our school. Thank you Morah Avril for all that you accomplish.

Alumni Attachments to Israel An essential idea in Hebrew Day’s Mission Statement is to attach our children meaningfully to Israel. This connection to our Jewish People and to the Land of Israel itself is increasingly precious because we see measurable declines in this whenever surveys are published. We see in the life choices of our graduates how wonderfully our program is succeeding.
For example:
This December, two HDS grads, Ami Alpert and Marcus Loebenstein will enter the IDF as an expression of their love
for Israel;
Two sisters- Jessica Felber (HDS Class of 2003) and Lisa Felber (HDS Class of 2006) have now made Aliyah. Jessica, a UC Berkeley grad lives on Kibbutz Alumim in the Negev, and Lisa, a Wharton grad, is completing her IDF service in December and plans to go on to graduate school in Israel.
Seven 2012 grads are now spending their gap years in Israel at various Yeshiva and Seminary programs. As the old saying goes, One School, and so Much Nachas!
