Tishrei Happens @ Hebrew Day Preschool
Thursday morning's first Paula Tannen Preschool Tishrei Fair was an incredible success! Being the first month of the Jewish New Year, Tishrei includes many special experiences. Preschoolers, parents, and teachers joined together to take part in nine interactive holiday stations which brought it all together. With a festive introduction by Chazan Mordy Esthersohn who sang holiday songs, everyone gathered around to hear Rabbi Meir Cohen blow shofar and discuss its distinct sounds, Rabbi Josh Cohen and Mr. Rafa Guerrero gathered in the crops from our fields and then and built a complete Sukkah in under five minutes! Rabbi Shmuel Ertel discussed the significance of Simchat Torah while our children practiced writing with a "quill and ink", and walked away with their own very tiny Torahs! Morah Meryn Ellis led a meaningful Yom Kippur (Teshuva, Tefillah, Tzedakah) station, Morah Ronit Snyder manned a tasting station for Simanim (symbolic foods for Rosh Hashana), Morah Malka Weiser inspired the children with a Touch & Feel Chagim sensory station, and Morah Rachel Guenniche helped the children make a play-dough round challah and taste a real one! Participants also made Sukkah decorations with Morah Lilach Lavine and the event finished with a special closing ceremony from Rabbi Weiser. Thank you to all the volunteers, parents, and teachers who made this event so memorable! Shana Tova!

Parshat Nitzavim Overview: Netzavim (Deut: 29:9 – 31)
Netzavim: On the last day of his life, Moshe gathers together all the people, both young and old, lowly and exalted, men and women in a final initiation. The covenant includes not only those who are present, but even those generations yet unborn. Moshe admonishes the people again to be extremely vigilant against idol worship, because in spite of having witnessed the abominations of Egypt, there will always be the temptation to experiment with foreign philosophies as a pretext for immorality. Moshe describes the desolation of the Land of Israel which will be a result of the failure to heed Hashem's mitzvos. Both their descendants and foreigners alike will remark on the singular desolation of the Land and its apparent inability to be sown or to produce crops. The conclusion will be apparent to all - the Jewish People have forsaken the One who protects them, in favor of idols which can do nothing. Moshe promises, however, that the people will eventually repent after both the blessings and the curses have been fulfilled. However assimilated they will have become among the nations, eventually Hashem will bring them back to Eretz Yisrael. Moshe tells the people to remember that the Torah is not a remote impossibility; rather its fulfillment is within the grasp of every Jew. The Parsha concludes with a dramatic choice between life and death. Moshe exhorts the people to choose life. . © 2015 Ohr Somayach
DRASHA: The title of this week’s Torah portion says everything that needs to be said about the Jewish story, nation and people. After forty years of war, rebellion, strife, great accomplishment, Divine revelation, miracles, defeats, Torah study, and personal and national tragedies and heartbreak, Moshe remarks, almost incredulously, that ‘you are here, today, standing tall and proud and mighty!’ Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman (Ramban), in his famous thirteenth century debate with the apostate Pablo Christiani, told King James of Aragon that the greatest proof of Jewish authenticity is that the Jews have survived as a people and a faith over all of these many centuries, in spite of its being “a small lamb amongst seventy wolves.” I had a neighbor of mine in the United States who was a Holocaust survivor. She spoke to me often and told me that she wished to return to her hometown in Poland to revisit her house and the surroundings of her shattered youth. She finally did so and when she returned I inquired of her as to how the trip and visit played out. She told me that she was able to find her house, still intact and even familiar to her. Her former Polish neighbor, a girl that she knew and played with when they were both children, now inhabited the house. She said that the Polish woman immediately recognized her even though more than four decades had passed since they last saw each other. The Polish neighbor exclaimed: “Bella, you are still alive!?” Much of the world then wanted to be rid of the “Jewish
problem” once and for all. There are many malevolent nations and people around today that still want to solve the “Jewish problem.” But somehow Bella is still alive. All of the predictions regarding the long story of the Jewish people that are recorded for us here in the book of Dvarim have come to pass in all of their grandeur and in all of their horror. Rabbi Eliyahu Kramer, the Gaon of Vilna, stated that all of Jewish history - past, present and future - is recorded for us in this final book of the Torah. This angst and soul-searching, the chaos and loneliness of human existence, the inscrutability of G-d’s guiding hand in human affairs, are all poignantly recorded for us in this week’s portion. We humans search for certainty in a very uncertain world. Many Jews, buffeted by ignorance, amnesia and false ideals, still somehow seek elsewhere for their identity and a road to spiritual fulfillment. We are a generation that wrestles with our own angels, the good ones and the better ones. But we are all still present here to do so. And that is the greatest wonder of all. Shabat shalom. Thinking our Way through Tishrei: * “I created the world in Tishrei. For you. Please take responsibility for the world. Please make it better.” Consider
yourself – your importance; the importance of what you do, what you say, who you are. Feel grateful to Hashem for
creating this world for you, for creating you and giving you life. Think of others also in this way. Therefore respect all
others. See all as important. Learn from them. The more clearly you see that Hashem created the world for them, the
more clearly that it is created for you. Certain days are special – giving us a unique opportunity to elevate the world,
to bring it purpose. On Rosh Hashanah, the first two days, judgment happens.
Remember Hashem today as your King: your personal King, as well as King of the Universe. Our Father. Our King.
Remember on this day that Hashem is both. For You. For everyone. Yom Kippur, day 10, gives the chance to be
forgiven, to sincerely feel sorry, to become cleansed. Sukkot gives us a week to rejoice; to celebrate our close
relationship with Hashem. We move outside, because all the protection we need comes from Above. It reminds us
how carefully Hashem watched over our ancestors, every generation of them. Rejoice. Feeling secure; knowing that
you will never be abandoned, never be alone. Every day Hashem’s focus is on you – His eye watches, His ear listens,
and His hand records. Just like when the President speaks there are many cameras, many microphones, every word
counts. Just like a loving parent, Hashem watches, listens, and records in order to celebrate growth, to encourage
goodness, to help His children along the way.
This month of Tishrei is exciting: so much to grow; so much to gain; so much to fulfill.
* Tishrei is the first month of the Jewish year. It begins at sundown on Sept. 13, 2015.

In 7th grade math, students presented creative ways of remembering the mathematical properties we've been studying.
Students in 6th grade math demonstrate what "modeling with math" could mean and what it actually means. Creative presentations that the students think up are excellent introductions to concepts and tools like bar models and graphs that they'll be using throughout the year.
The Talmud states: Anyone who judges others favorably is judged favorably. (Shab 127) Our children are taught this attitude: be generous in your assessment of others, think kindly, and learn to appreciate the goodness within every other person. They are learning how to do a better job of being more charitable when we think of and talk with others. We have learned how we can help others feel more included in our social circles, and promote greater harmony amongst our classmates and friends. Parents comment that they can see more positive interactions by their child, both at school and at home. We look forward to building on this success in teaching good values throughout the coming New Year. May the sweetness of our children bring down from Above a Year of Peace, Kindness, and Harmony. Shana Tova!

Seventh graders are learning the body systems. They constructed mouse and rat skeletons from owl pellets
and learned many new vocabulary words.
The first grade students are happily exploring the
wide range of learning modalities that enable them
to develop their skills and reach their full potential.
The activities go from music & movement to
acquiring Hebrew language, to holiday baking and
mitzvah projects. Here are some samples of our

Fourth Grade Vocabulary Word Chain
The fourth graders made a vocabulary word chain this week with their list of words from their first Wordly Wise les-son. The students found the definition of the word on their chest, on the back of one of their peers and formed a chain. This game required knowledge of the word's meaning, communication and cooperation. Mrs. Adams watched while the students formed the chain and then asked each student to read the definition in front of them and use the word in a sentence invented by them. It was a fun way to study for their first vocabulary test.
Shown above are second grade students showing off their Rosh Hashanah projects. They worked very hard this week
making special preparations for Rosh Hashanah!

Talmudic Excitement
No, it is not a classical argument about a Torah text,
but rather a celebration of a journey begun! Mazel
tov to our 7th grade Talmud class receiving their new
tractate of Bava Metzia and celebrating together. The
class will start with the second chapter which covers
the laws of finding and returning lost objects. The
chocolate milk and donuts added a sugar high to go
along with the expectation of studying Torah and
growing together. We expect to hear more as the
concepts are mastered and the analysis is
unraveled. Thank you Rabbi Moskowitz for
launching this year's study with such enthusiasm.
The Living Torah
The young ladies of Soille's 8th grade class are breaking new ground in the realm of Chumash learning. Embodying the Successful Me trait of collaboration, the girls work together on a daily basis to tackle, understand, and critically think about the ideas brought forth from the text. Utilizing videos prepared by Morah Weiser, each girl prepares the content at home at their own pace to hone their reading and translation skills. In class they take the content and bring it to life through exploration of commentary. Chumash class by 8th grade is no longer a frontal teaching experience. The students have reached a point where they have the ability to now be life long learners of Torah! All are welcome to come by and watch Torah come to life in Morah Weiser’s class every day here at Soille!

What does our Board of Directors do?
The Board of Directors of Soille Hebrew Day School governs
our school. What does it mean to govern? It means that the
Board’s primary activity is to oversee a strategic plan of
school advancement, in keeping with the school’s Mission,
and to see to it that there is adequate funding to carry out
this plan. “The Board’s real constituency is not today’s stu-
dents, but the students of the future.” (Independent School
Management) The only direct employee of the Board is the
Headmaster, who is given authority over day to day matters.
The Board advises, oversees policy and direction, and assists
in leading the school. Board members represent the entire
community. The Hebrew Day Board meets 6 times per year.

Room Parents Needed
Do you have a child in grades: Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th, or Middle School? Then, you can become a Room Parent. Your job would be to liaison with the parents in your child’s class to communicate school activities, teacher’s needs for field trips, class projects, perfor-mances, etc., and be the general “go to” person for that class. It’s fun and you get to know lots of people!
Please contact Nancy Barker, [email protected] if you would like to be a Room Parent.
