The features of IAMAS’s research education

are its social implementations that use projects

as their linchpins, team-teaching by faculty

from various disciplines, and its curriculum

where students obtain specialized as well as

practical knowledge and techniques.

Also, the collaborations between students

from various disciplines (art and design, science

and technology, humanities, etc.) helps the students

stimulate one another, letting them broaden

their individual skills and knowledge. The

research environment with its elite selected

few is also quite enriched, with the strength

of its network of graduates being another of

IAMAS’s appealing points.

IAMAS PEOPLE WEB SITE

Let’s take a look at the inner thoughts of

some graduates on the IAMAS website.

www.iamas.ac.jp/iamaspeople/

IAMAS (Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences), a Master’s level graduate school. Combining progressive technological development and cultural trends to propose advanced artistic expressions, design innovation, and new manufacturing techniques.

IAMAS, a Master’s level graduate school launched

by Gifu Prefecture in 2001. It enjoys an international

reputation as a limited enrollment graduate program,

with a full complement of highly qualified instructors.

Founded on the principle of exploring the convergence

of arts and sciences. A school that combines progressive

technological development and cultural trends to propose

advanced artistic expressions, design innovation, and new

manufacturing techniques. Aiming to educate socially

aware creatives through an intensive research and hands-

on practice. Relocating to the Softopia Japan area in 2014,

developing activities around a ‘field-style’ campus; open to

both local and regional communities. Thus creating unique

open space research and educational institution.

Enhanced Experience EnvironmentIt is predicted that, in a world that has reached the Technological Singularity (where artificial intelligence has surpassed the intellectual power

of all mankind), there will be a large change in the paradigm. We will conduct research for creating an environment where our experiences will be enhanced while taking into account the impacts the Singularity will likely bring about. We will actualize expressions and systems, particularly those that deal with real-time time and space, as well as intelligence robots.

Prototyping tomorrowBy extracting topics from real society, and through the realization of a prototype aimed at future societies, we aim to create a vision of the future. Using even our own design process as a research theme, we undertake collaborative research with companies. We aim for the realization of experience-focused prototypes and news proposal for society.

Re-inventing the WheelThrough hands-on practice, we will change history and create a “present” that might have been. In this project, instead of fantasizing about the future and reminiscing on the past for the current present, we will decipher the history of media, and search for an ideal state based on present materials, processing technology, and social situations.

Craft, Fabrication and SustainabilityUsing the IAMAS Innovation Studio as a base, we conduct our activities while collaborating with TAB, an architecture and design firm based in Ogaki. We research the potential of, and implement, small-scale yet sustainable businesses and communities that utilize digital fabrication, as well as the tools that make them possible, in the Maker Movement age.

PROJECT

Mino HouseThe Mino Project, which began in 2011, and has borrowed an old Japanese-style house in the “town of udatsu” since 2013, doesn’t simply introduce IAMAS’s activities; it implements various expressions and creative activities together with the people of the region on the basis of thought and perspective that is rooted in the livelihood of the region.

[Other Projects]■ A Platform for Creation in the Future■ Manufacturing Open Method■ Media and Local Railways■ IAMAS Library■ NxPC.Lab

Art ThinkingIn this project, we critically debate the current state of art in modern culture and society, as well as modern culture and society themselves through art practices. Specifically, we conduct the creation of works and exhibition planning, with a focus on seminars for reading literature. This year, in collaboration with other projects, we participated in cooperative projects with the city of Ogaki.

Research project for expressions that utilize high definition video technologyAccording to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, in 2016 they will begin a test broadcast for 8K TVs which will number 16 times the current amount. This kind of transition to high-resolution images is not just a realization of portrayals that are finer than existing ones, it is bristling with the potential of a previously unheard of visual expression being born. Pursuing that is the objective of this project.

Technology for WelfareUsing welfare as the theme, each participant will attempt to solve a problem that they have found. Welfare has a wide range, spanning from matters affecting disabled people, to problems for the elderly, social welfare, and support for developing countries. We will think about what problems there are from each perspective, as well as consider solutions and what is necessary after said solutions, and seek better methods.

Neo Co-creationThis is a project where, while having our external, creative members interact with the local residents, who for hundreds of years, have created and carried on a variety of arts of living in the Neo district (formerly Motosu Village) of Motosu City in Gifu Prefecture amongst an approaching transition from a bloating civilization that continues to break what it has and create new things, to a civilization that continues to grow, we think about what a sustainable regional society is, and what living in said society is.

IAMAS Projects are a social testing ground for media creation. Students and faculty members gather

together and, through joint activities, aim to create advanced and unique research. And, by working

together with government offices, businesses, and other universities, the Projects are also involved with

sharing research results with the public.(In addition to the Projects listed here, there are various other Projects being carried out.)

In the first year, we implement projects, and, cultivate student’s knowledge and applied

skills through classes that will become the foundation of student’s research. In the second

year, we continue with projects, working mainly with each student’s Master’s research as the

focus, whereupon students will put together their Master’s works and theses as the results of

their research, in the goal to

obtain their Master’s degree.

IAMAS students enroll from various specialized fields, and from

various regions. Crossing beyond the walls of nationality, age, and

disciplines (art and design, science and technology, humanities, etc.), students

empathize with and discuss one another’s way of thinking, and in

the course of doing so, enhance their own research.(Data collected from students enrolled in 2014)

STUDENT PROFILE

SCHEDULE MASTER’S RESEARCH

In order to complete the Master’s degree in Media Creation after 2 years, each student must

determine their personal research topic in consultation with multiple instructors. Students

are required to produce a Master’s Work and Master’s Thesis or Master’s Thesis only.
