**Social language may take 2-3 years to develop, while Cognitive Academic Language may take 5-7 years to develop. Many teachers make the logical mistake of trying to push their ELLs into more advanced classes. Because the ELLs have a good command of English proficiency (and the younger they are, the more native-like they may sound), teachers are under the impression that the students know more English than they actually do. Although they might be accomplished speakers and sound native-like, academically they might be years behind the native English speaker.
