    AND MARLA TIPPING, STEWARDSHIP CHAIR

As this newsletter goes to press, 446 church households have responded

with pledge cards for the operating budget totaling $1,417,466.13 Our pledge

goal this year is $1,690,000, and so the gap is $272,533.87. The operating

budget for 2011 does not have increases in any program ministry areas,

operations, or the Conference Apportionments. The Staff Parish Relations

Committee has a 3% increase to cover benefit costs and to offer staff raises

(compensation for staff has been flat for 3 years).

As you can see, it is crucial that we hear from every church participant. The

Finance Committee will review pledge levels at their January 18 meeting, and

if necessary, recommend to the ministry areas, the Staff Parish Relations

Committee (staff) and the Ad Council that cuts be made. If you have not

returned your pledge card, please do so today. You can download and fill out

a pledge card from the website, Hennepinchurch.org, pick up a form at

the church, or contact Chris Jackson ([email protected], 612-435-1308), Tara

Emerson in the Finance office ([email protected], 612-435-1331). We want to

hear from you, and we want to hear your prayers for your church and for

    your own needs! Thank you!

you are invited to a potluck meal (bring a dish to share, the entree will be

provided). At that time we will review the ministries of the past year, note

milestones, and look forward to the new year with the election of church

officers and ratifying the church operating budget. All church members have

    SOUPER SUNDAY

    Community Meals

    Ministry will celebrate

    Souper Sunday on

    February 6, 2010.Many churches

    celebrate Super

    Bowl Sunday as

    Souper Sunday,

    and this year

    C o m m u n i t y

Meals is hoping you will bring soup

that day. But why just bring one can of

soup for the hungry? If you buy a can of

soup for the hungry each time your

team wins, think of the ministry that

could be done this winter. If yourprofessional, college, high school or

    neighborhood team wins wont you

buy a can of soup, and bring them all

on February 6? How many cans would

that be? Join in the fun, and celebrate

    Souper Sundayfrom now until February

    6. There will be many thanks.

FAITH IN ACTION TEAMHENNEPINS LOCAL OUTREACH COMMITTEE

    Hennepins local outreach committee

is the Faith In Action Team. In 2009 the

members of the former local outreach

    committee Ministries to the City

evaluated the purpose and relevance oftheir committee. Through this process

it was realized that the purpose the

Ministries to the City committee once

served in this congregation and in our

community was no longer relevant to

the current issues and changing times in

this world around us. So, we celebrated

the work that had been done over many

years by various people and reformed

    the local outreach committee into

the Faith In Action team. In November

    of 2009, the Administrative Council

officially adopted the Faith In Actionteam as Hennepin Churchs local out-

    reach committee.

The Faith In Action team is here to

connect people to their faith calling as

Christians, to bring awareness to people

about the different ways people can put

their faith into action, and to plan local

    service opportunities that engage people

in working with and serving others

    through projects in the surrounding

community. Under the umbrella of the

Faith In Action team there are both in-

    ternal Hennepin ministry programs and

    external community partners. Our inter-

    nal Hennepin ministry programs in-

    clude:

    Community Meals

    The Dignity Center

Compass 180 (prison mentoringand scholarship program)

    The Steeple People Store

    Building Walls, Tearing Down

    Barriers (Habitat for Humanity)

    The following external community

partners are the outcome of various

    relationships that Hennepin members

engaged in over the years to create

    these different community organizations

that are going strong in our community

    today:

Meals On Wheels Project for Pride In Living

    Groveland Food Shelf

    NIP (Neighborhood Involvement

    Program)

In months to come we will be sharing

many opportunities that you can be a

part of to put YOUR faith into action.

If you prefer to learn about those oppor-

    tunities contact Kristyn Ebert at

[email protected] to learn more about

    how you can get involved.

A WA WELLNESSELLNESS CCHECKHECK--IINNCYNTHIA ASHLEY, PARISH NURSE

About every season throughout the year, I do a personal health

inventory of my whole being. I call it a Wellness Check-In. I reviewholistically, the physical, mental, spiritual, emotional and environ-

mental areas of my life. I measure or weigh the stronger and weakerareas of this WELLNESS WHEEL: paying attention to the weaker areasthat may need change and healing attention.

This little exercise provides an avenue to plan, adjust, and move towards ahealthier lifestyle or path. You may want to perform a similar Wellness Check-Inon your own life. How is your mental, spiritual, physical, emotional and environ-

    mental status doing?

As we evolve and grow into this New Year, may your Holistic Health be strong

and vibrant, because we are interested as a Community of faith in your well being!

    KOINONIA PARTNER SEARCH UNDERWAY

At the Nov. 4, 2010 Administrative Councilmeeting, a proposal was adopted following

the long work of the Koinonia Task Force,

chaired by Tom Sopoci and Dr. Glen Nelson. A

    Koinonia Partnership Search Committee was

created to spend one year in an effort to find an

outside partner to share the facilities, cost of

    operation, maintenance and capital improvement

    of our church retreat center.

In December 2010, the group was formed

according to the Ad Council resolution: Lynn

Swon and Fred Blaisdell from the Trustees, PeterSausen and Rod Bacon from Finance, Bob Knudson and Tom Sopoci from

Koinonia, and Juanita Reed Boniface and Liz Buckingham from the Ad Council,

along with me as chair. We have funds for assistance from a consultant as needed.

Our commitment is to work efficiently to review all possible communities for

a partner which is viable and compatible with the mission of Hennepin Church.

When that review is complete, we will pursue any possible partners. The Ad

Council expects a firm report by December 2011, with action at the January 2012

Church Conference. Please keep us in your prayers for this task. If you have

comments for this Committee, please contact me, [email protected] or 612-435-

1308 or any member listed above.

    SEEDFOR THOUGHTFROMTHE MULTICULTURAL COMMITTEE

    The latest Wilder research study

about homelessness notes that togetherAfrican American and American Indianpeople make up 4% of the MN adultpopulation, but this group accounts for41% of the homeless population. Whydo you think this is so? Do we as Chris-tians, have a responsibility to addressthis disparity in homelessness betweenpeople of color and Caucasian people?

Many are uncomfortable when theysee a person standing at a freeway exitholding a sign stating Homeless: Canyou spare some change? Why do you

think people panhandle for money? Whatdo you do in this situation? What shouldthe community do about this?

Imagine that you know a 36-year-oldAfrican American man, released fromprison to a halfway house two blocksfrom Church. He does not have a GEDand has a felony for robbery on hisrecord. The prison rules state he mustfind a job and a place to live in 60 days.If not, he will be put back into prison. What are the chances that this man willget a job and a place to live in this

economy? How would you pray for thishim? What could do for him?

Recently, a homeless, mentally ill andchemically dependent African Americanman was severely beaten with injuriesto his ears/eyes/head. He was treated inthe ER at Hennepin County MedicalCenter and kept there for 10 hours, thenhe was released to the street, with no-where to recuperate. If you were in thissituation, what would you want tohappen to you?
