Began in 1812 and ended with stalemate in 1815
Trade issues and British control of American citizens sparked tension because of embargo of British goods
Primary objective of America during the war was to acquire Canada
America was a young nation and did not have a strong, large army
Bordered by several hostile international nations (Britain, Spain, France), as well as internal hostile nations (Native Americans)
Southern and Western Congressional leaders wanting war became known as War Hawks. Important people:

Native Americans to stand up against the Americans
Battle of the Thames – October 1813; Tecumseh dies
His death ended any hope of a confederacy among the Native American tribes of the Northwest Territory
Andrew Jackson – promoted to major general in the US Army

Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana Jackson was in
Louisiana when the British headed toward the port of New Orleans in late 1814
Jackson’s troops Mostly inexperienced volunteers Free blacks, Tennessee and Kentucky
riflemen, and Louisiana militia Some pirates
January 1815 – Battle begins and Jackson wins a decisive victory Will help him more political because the war
had been over for two weeks
