Introduction
What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an organization’s obligation to consider the interests of their
customers, employees, shareholders, communities, and the ecology and to consider the social and
environmental consequences of their business activities. By integrating CSR into core business processes
and stakeholder management, organizations can achieve the ultimate goal of creating both social value
and corporate value.
We have used ISO 26000 as a guide/framework to integrate and implement Social
Responsibility into our values and practices.
What is ISO 26000 for Social Responsibility
ISO 26000 provides guidance on how businesses and organizations can operate in a socially responsible
way. This means acting in an ethical and transparent way that contributes to the health and welfare of
society.
ISO 26000 has 7 principles for social responsibility that organizations should respect and address
1. Accountability:
2. Transparency
3. Ethical behavior
4. Respect for stakeholders interests
5. Respect for the rule of law
6. Respect for human rights
7. Respect for international norms of behavior
ISO 26000 deals with 7 core subjects
1. Organizational governance
2. Human rights
3. Labor practices
4. The Environment
5. Fair operating practices
6. Consumer issues
7. Community involvement and development

Vision
Socially responsible Water Authority and stable water supply for our future generations.
Mission
To Maximize our contribution to sustainable development.
Motivation
Our main motivation to apply ISO 26000 is our core business priorities, i.e. providing safe and reliable drinking
water, advancing innovation in water treatment and delivery, helping to ensure the health of the communities,
and contributing to sustainable development through conservation of water resources.
Value:
- Wide coverage of reliable water supply, even in rural and poor areas with few populations, where all Jordanian citizens are WAJ customers.
- Use high tech water treatment and accredited testing laboratory to ensure safe
and quality drinking water, resulting in a decreasing number of customer
inquiries about water quality. - Almost full share asset ownership of three water service companies. - No competition since WAJ is the only municipal water provider. - Pricing fixed by the Jordanian Government which is subsidized. - Customer Call Centre of highly-trained staff is available to answer inquiries and
address any kind of water crisis situation day or night. - PPP regarding water services (billing, debts, etc.) - Good reputation and image of WAJ attract donors’ funds. - Factual decisions based on Water Databank. - Skilled and loyal employees.

Impacts:
Positive Negative
Promote water conservation through water
demand management e.g. water-saving
devices to customers, campaigns,
broadcasting to help consumers reduce costs
and sustain water consumption.
Affect groundwater sustainability due to
over abstraction.
Minimize carbon footprint due to use of
renewable resources to generate power for
pumping and reduction of fuel consumption,
and use of energy efficient pumps.
High percentage of water losses in networks
through distribution systems.
Impact on environment by treatment of
wastewater which is used for irrigation
purposes, so as to save fresh water for
drinking purposes.
Slight effect on communities' health as a
result of WAJ water and wastewater projects
that produce odor, noise and dust.
Impact on health of citizens by ensuring safe
water.
Affect labor safety and health in projects
Impact on human rights to reliable water
and sanitation services at reasonable prices.
Affect on economy due to high capital
investments in water operation and
maintenance as well energy consumption.
Slight impact on human rights in the supply
chain through influence on suppliers and
contractors in mega donor funded projects.
Improve creation of employment through
implementation of mega projects and PPP.
Effect on economy as a result of contracting
local suppliers.
Leverage:
- WAJ has high leverage as WAJ tenders big projects where we can influence contractors and suppliers.
8
Risks and opportunities:
Risks Opportunities
Water scarcity and increase on demand in
the future due to population growth,
economic, industrial and agricultural
development.
New solutions such as water reuse and
desalination to help ensure sustainable
water in future for Jordanian citizens.
Irregular water supply, due to scarcity of
water sources in Jordan, causes complaints
of citizens on water shortage and billing
problems, and affect reputation of WAJ.
Reforming of water sector processes and
rules, e.g. establishing of water regulator,
will enhance water services, revenues and
reduce deficit.
Safety of water is critical. Any water
crisis/problem can influence the image of
WAJ.
Political instability in the region can affect
water supply from Israel and Syria.
As a result of Jordan’s geographic location in
the heart of unstable region, refugees
increase water demand and affect quality of
water and efficiency wastewater treatment.
Financial risks as total expenditure is more
than revenues and budget is subsidized by
the government.
Limited recruitment and brain drain due to
unpaid leave permissions.
9
Stakeholders
WAJ stakeholders' were identified through brainstorming, and identifying the supply chain, value chain, and sphere
of influence. Stakeholders were prioritized based on their influence vs. interest matrix, and accordingly the most
important stakeholders to WAJ were recognized, i.e. the water companies, Jordan Valley Authority, Ministry of
Health, energy suppliers e.g. power company, media, consultants, contractors, employees, banks, donors,
municipalities, Ministry of Water and Irrigation, local and foreign suppliers, private well owners, local community
and customers/citizens/consumers. Stakeholders' involvement was analyzed in their influence vs. involvement
matrix and accordingly it was found out that stakeholders that need to be more involved are: the local community,
customers/citizens/ consumers, energy suppliers e.g. power company, contractors, banks, municipalities, local and
foreign suppliers, private well owners and the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization. Accordingly, WAJ
communication and involvement plan and tools has to be amended to emphasize on the important stakeholders
that are not sufficiently involved and to reflect the stakeholders' expectations, interests, rights and concerns.

Strategic options:
- WAJ to be only a bulk water supplier and contract distribution companies for retailed water.
- Reduce the abstraction of ground water by utilizing other water resources (desalination, reuse, etc.)
- Minimizing water losses. - Assure water security by implementing Red-Dead water conveyance project. - Re-enacting new Water Law to enforce and unify related regulations to reinforce
sanctions and penalties and enhance PPP and PSP.
Priority issues of core subjects:
- Human rights: Issue 3: Avoidance of complicity - Labour practices: Issue 4: Health and safety at work and Issue 5: Human
development and training in the workplace - The Environment: Issue1: Prevention of pollution and Issue 2: Sustainable resource
