Coming Up Today …

Social Media Time ManagementThe Overall Picture

Before you can begin to manage your time more effectively on social media you need to be really clear about some basics:

1. Why are you using social media?2. What are your social media

objectives?3. Which are the best social media

channels to use?

Once you’re clear on those points, you can then:

1. Select the best tools to achieve this2. Learn the best strategies to manage

these channels3. Learn how to measure your social

media outcomes

Why Should I Even Bother About Social Media?

1. Social media gives you an instant web presence … no cost, no webmasters, no tech! So if you have no budget and no web site, using social media you can get your business online – for free – in a matter of minutes

2. Social media gets you on mobile immediately - no cost, no webmasters, no tech! So if you have a web site – and you can’t afford the technical work that will need to make it mobile and tablet friendly – you can solve that problem instantly using a social media channel

3. Social media gives you instant and powerful SEO (search engine optimization). Because they’re the world’s most heavily trafficked sites, you get to ride on their coat tails – no SEO budget required That means that you can get found in the search engines fast!

Social Media Channels Covered Today 1. I will consider these four channels Primary social media channels (because they

directly apply to more people)

2. I will consider these channels Secondary social media channels (because they are very popular, but are less directly relevant or easily accessible to more businesses)

3. I won’t deal at all with these Tertiary social media channels (because I don’t have experience with them or because they’re currently more ‘minority’ use)

Time Management Skills For Social Media [Part 1]

Now we have a better idea:

1. Why you’re on social media in the first place

2. What you want to achieve from your use of social media

3. The best channels for you to use on social media

But …

Time Management Skills For Social Media [Part 1]

Beware the social

media time vampire!

Developing a time management strategy for social mediaYou do need to be on social media

You do not need to spend every waking hour on social media

You do need to monitor your social media activities so that you can monitor your ROI (return on investment) ROI doesn’t haven’t to be measured only in financial terms!

You do not need to be an ‘expert’ or a large company to make social media work well for you, neither do you need a team of thousands!

The hazards of always-on notifications and how to manage them

The most important thing about social media time management is not to be on it all of the time

That means that you don’t have to respond to ever like, comment or message within a couple of seconds

However, your social media channels should not be deserted –you’re better closing them down than leaving them unattended. An abandoned web site or social media site is like having a phone that nobody ever picks up.

Always on notifications can be the biggest time vampire of them all … so let’s get them turned off now!

Using Speed Dial

Why Use Speed Dial?

1 – It’s a massive time saver2 – It saves you typing and re-typing URLs3 –It’s massively expandable4 – It’s better and faster than bookmarks5 – All your social media sites exactly where you want them

Effective content curation and useful tools

You’re going to need to find great content to share on social media – how can we speed up that process?

Content curation is the process of collecting, organizing and displaying information relevant to a particular topic or area of interest. Services or people that implement content curation are called curators. Curation services can be used by businesses as well as end users.

[Source: Wikipedia]

You need great content but you don’t want to spend a lot of time hunting for it!

Effective content curation and useful tools

Content curation is when an individual (or team) consistently finds, organizes, annotates and shares the most relevant and highest quality digital content on a specific topic for their target market.

Curation is a great way to support your created content strategy, publish content consistently and keep track of your favorite information sources.

Enlightened content marketers are using a content mix that is only 65% created, with the remainder being 25% curated and 10% syndicated.

Some time management basics and great resources

Here are 5 simple things that you can do straight away and at no expense

Create a content calendar (organised posting schedule)

Use lists in Twitter and Facebook (effective content management)

Use Postplanner (use free version, schedule posts and get posting ideas)

Use FocalFilter (block time-wasting sites)

Use News Feed Eradicator (eliminate distractions)

Content Calendars

The easiest way to streamline post activity on your business page is to create a simple content calendar.

Content moves quickly on social media.

Figure out when your customers are the most active and plan on posting then to increase the chances of your post being seen, liked, and shared.

Set aside time weekly to research post ideas and then disperse them throughout the week.

You may even want to experiment with having daily themes – overtime you will develop a strategy that works best for you and your target consumer.

Have fun and do not be afraid to experiment.

Be sure to vary your post type to include video, links, and polls – different types of content will appeal to different people.

Making Lists (Mainly Twitter)

As you follow more people, it can be challenging to focus on the information coming from specific people and groups. That’s where Twitter lists come in.

A Twitter list allows you to separate the Twitter accounts you follow into groups. You might create separate lists for:

Customers

Potential customers

Neighborhood or community businesses

Trade or professional organizations

People who inspire you

People you talk with the most

Listening/automation/scheduling and measuring in social media

Social media listening, also known as social media monitoring, is the process of identifying and assessing what is being said about a company, individual, product or brand.

[Source: techtarget.com]

In basic terms, social media monitoring is the act of using a tool to, well, monitor what is being said on the internet. It sometimes also goes by the name of, or is bundled with, Social Listening, Online Analytics, Buzz Analysis, Social Media Measurement, Social Media Intelligence, Social Media Management, SMM (also the acronym for Social Media Marketing, confusingly) … we could go on.

Hootsuite vs Buffer

As you can see, Hootsuite and Buffer each have their pros and cons. If I had to pick one, it would definitely be Buffer – their scheduling tools are hard to beat! But overall, I’ve found that using a combination of both tools is the best way to manage our various Twitter accounts. Hootsuiteobviously shines in the listening department, whereas Buffer edges out the competition with its intuitive scheduling tools and clean interface. Neither is particularly great with analytics, but then again, that’s not really what these tools were created for. There are certainly additional solutions out there that can do it all, but we tend to gravitate toward low-cost, flexible options instead.
