2019 FALL ISSUE So much to celebrate! It was a celebration of all things Friendly on the evening of October 17! 2019 has proven to be a very good year indeed for our organization, as we celebrated two significant milestones: The 170th anniversary of our founding in 1849 by the Rochester Female Charitable Association. Originally named the Rochester Association for the Relief of Homeless and Friendless Females, today Friendly Senior Living thrives as a leading provider of top- quality housing, services and care for older adults in our community. The successful completion of our “Inspire. Innovate. Impact.” fundraising campaign, which raised over $4,500,000 for a variety of life-enriching capital improvements and program initiatives across the Friendly Senior Living continuum. “We are very proud of our long and rich history, and the tremendous impact we’ve had on those we serve,” says Glen Cooper, President & CEO of Friendly Senior Living. “While our name, location and services have changed over the decades, we remain committed to the vision and mission established by our founders.” Adds Denise Hubler, Vice President of Marketing & Development, “Our goal is to always exceed expectations with new and unique solutions, and to remain at the forefront of our field with a sharp eye on the future. We are so grateful to all of the generous companies, foundations and individuals who share our vision and supported our campaign; they are truly making a difference in the lives of older adults in the Rochester community.” For a look at a special video presentation shared with our friends at the celebration event, please visit: youtube.com/user/FriendlySeniorLiving/videos Friendly Senior Living 170th Anniversary Celebration! The Friendly Home has been recognized for excellence on Newsweek’s inaugural list of Best Nursing Homes 2020. More than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide were analyzed based on rigorous criteria, including recommendations by medical experts and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services nursing home performance data. This ranking places the Friendly Home in the top 20 nursing homes in New York State.

Additionally, the Friendly Home was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a Best Nursing Home 2019-2020. Fewer than 3,000 out of over 15,000 nursing homes nationwide earned this designation. Further, the Friendly Home was among the top 8% of nursing homes to receive a High-Performing Long-Term Care Rating. The list offers consumers comprehensive information about care, safety, health inspections, staffing and more.

“These outstanding distinctions reflect the Friendly Home’s commitment to providing excellent and compassionate care and services,” Friendly Senior Living President & CEO Glen Cooper said. “We are very proud to be recognized for our dedication to ensuring the best for those we serve. I’d like to acknowledge and thank our staff for their very important role in these achievements. Every day, they show that friends care always.”

A GARDEN OF LOVEBarbara “Bobbie” Hargrave was a long-time devoted supporter of the Friendly Home. Her involvement included many years of volunteer service in various capacities; she later resided at Cloverwood Senior Living among dear friends and neighbors.

After her passing earlier this year, Bobbie’s family chose to remember her connection to the Friendly Home in a very special way: the lovely gardens in the front of the Friendly Home were dedicated in her memory. Says Bobbie’s daughter Ann, “Mom would be pleased to be honored this way as she had such a deep relationship with the Friendly Home.”

Drum roll please! We are very honored to share that the Friendly Home has been named among the best nursing homes in the country by two prestigious publications.

CAMPAIGN DONORS

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

Earlier in 2019, Friendly Senior Living received a $400,000 Challenge Commitment Fund from the Charles and Jean August Family. The generosity of the August family presented an exciting opportunity to raise $800,000 as the organization neared its campaign goal of $4.5 million. Many were inspired by the August family’s initial gift to make a donation of their own, and we are very pleased to report that the challenge was met! Many thanks to the Charles and Jean August Family, and to all the supportive donors who rose to the challenge!

Thank You!

Inspire. Innovate. Impact.

Enhanced Memory Care Programming Over the last several months, Friendly Senior Living has been partnering with Dementia Care Specialists (DCS), a leading national consulting firm specializing in person-directed dementia care. We are evolving our “best abilities” approach to memory care, which is focused on providing staff training, activities and an overall environment specifically suited to individuals in various stages of dementia. While this has always been our philosophy, our work with DCS has helped us to develop a more formalized and innovative plan as we move forward.

Neurologic Music Therapy Friendly Senior Living’s Board Certified Music Therapist, Sam Snyder, has been trained in Neurologic Music Therapy. Sam works one-on-one with residents to address specific needs using Music Therapy techniques. For example, people with Parkinson’s are learning to speak and walk better and with more confidence. Individuals with dementia are learning to re-orient themselves and increase their levels of alertness and attention. Sam is helping people with aphasia, who cannot speak as a result of suffering a stroke, to find their voices.

Staff Education/ Career Pathways To address a critical industry need for hands-on caregivers, Friendly Senior Living developed a unique staff development program for individuals to pursue careers in health care. The program provides funding for expenses during training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, such as salary, books and childcare. The program is delivered in partnership with Monroe Community College. Additional career advancement opportunities are supported, including Certified Nursing Assistants becoming Licensed Practical Nurses, and Licensed Practical Nurses becoming Registered Nurses.

Friendly Gift Shop & Friendly Café These Friendly Home destinations are often described as the “heart of the Home,” giving our Members and their loved ones inviting places to spend time together.

Tranquility Room This beautiful new space at the Friendly Home offers a quiet oasis for privacy, prayer and meditation. A waterfall feature, comfortable furnishings, soothing sound system, adjustable lighting and a realistic ceiling sky scene provide a sense of peace and serenity.

Fire Pit Cloverwood residents are so enjoying the new stone fire pit area! Nothing beats a fireside seat to take in the seasonal scenery and partake in conversation and cocktails with friends.

Outdoor Dining Patio Coming soon to Cloverwood is an outdoor dining patio, to enjoy meals with friends and the fine weather!

Theater For movie buffs and sports fans alike, Cloverwood’s high-tech theater is the place to be, complete with reclining seats, a state-of-the-art sound system and an 85” 4K screen.

Fitness Center Featuring upgrades and the newest equipment, such as treadmills, elliptical machines and hand weights, Cloverwood’s Fitness Center is an active place for wellness-minded residents.

Irrigation System Cloverwood’s lovely grounds and landscaping are kept in tip-top condition thanks to the installation of a new irrigation system.

Wellness Center Coming soon to Linden Knoll is an all-new Wellness Center, which will feature workout equipment, a variety of wellness programs and special health-related clinics to help our residents maintain their health and independence.

Thank You!Friendly Senior Living is most appreciative of the many generous donors who supported our recent fundraising campaign. The capital and program enhancements funded by the campaign touch the lives of those we serve in a variety of meaningful ways:
