Welcome From Rabbi Tulik

This has become a very familiar word. I’ve been hearing it almost daily for the past two months. Welcome! Welcome to Rochester! Welcome to Temple B’rith Kodesh! Welcome to the neighborhood! Welcome. But in the last two months, I’ve learned that welcome at TBK is so much more than a greeting. In Hebrew, the way to say “Welcome” is Baruch ha’ba (for men) or B’rucha ha’ba’ah (for women) or B’ruchim ha’ba’im (for groups). This means literally, “blessed are you who have come.” And I truly do feel blessed to have come here. I have been met with so much warmth, so much openness, so much patience and understanding. I am working with a kind and committed team. My boss is a mensch and a mentor. My daughter is already building new friendships with her classmates and neighborhood kids. And I am so getting used to spending no more than 15 minutes in my car at a time!

One of the most wonderful things I’ve already learned about Temple B’rith Kodesh, however, is that I am not special! The sense of welcome is equally doled out to anyone who chooses to come here. And there are programs and opportunities for just about anyone who is even a tiny bit interested! There are twen-ty-two physical doors into this building. There are at least that

many programmatic doors. Are you interested in the Religious School? Our school is warm and inclusive and ready to welcome you in. Are you looking to dive deep into Torah or Tanach? Join our weekly Tanach or Torah study classes. Do you want to learn from local and renowned authors, scholars, and thinkers? Check out our Kollel classes. Want to do some hands-on good for the community and the world? Our Social Action Commit-tee has dozens of connections to local organizations where you can make a direct impact in someone’s life. Are you looking for spiritual comfort and strength? Shabbat comes every week and our services will help your soul soar. Temple B’rith Kodesh is a most welcoming community always open to new ideas, newcomers, and regulars alike.

In the months ahead, I look forward to getting to know each of you and learning what brings you in. I am so happy and feel so blessed to have joined Temple B’rith Kodesh to feel welcomed and to now be able to welcome others.

B’ruchim ha’ba’im. Blessed are you who have come to join us.

Welcome!

BE SOMEBODY EXTRAORDINARY:GIVE BLOOD!

Out of every 100 people, only 4 or 5 actually give blood. And, each unit of donated blood can help several people. So, if you’re healthy, 17 or older (16 with parental consent), and weigh 110 pounds or more, you may be eligible to do something extraordi-nary.

You may be eligible to give blood at the Temple B’rith Kodesh blood drive on Sunday September 16 between 11am-3pm.

If you’d like to sign up to donate, or if you have questions, please contact Herb Skerker 585-381-9367 or Liza Robbins Theuman 585-201-2024. You can also log on at www.redcrossblood.org/ to set up an appointment.

New beginnings . . .

As this arrives in your hands, we will be on the threshold of 5779. As with the pending arrival of any New Year, we often take the opportunity to reflect on the year gone by and to consider the year ahead.

It has certainly been a year of change, at TBK and in our world. Some changes have been for the good, while for others we might have desired another outcome. In any case, we will soon gather for the High Holy Days and give thanks for the opportunity to greet another year.

We have been pleased to welcome Rochelle Tulik and family as our new Assistant Rabbi. We continue to be inspired by the wisdom of Rabbi Stein and the beautiful music of Keri Lopatin Berger. We continue to benefit from the dedicated work of Executive Director Michael Yudelson and his fabulous professional staff.

We look forward to their leadership and support in the New Year. We also look to our dedicated committees and volunteers to continue bring their talent and vision to making TBK a kehila kedosha – a holy community. If you have ideas (or some time on your hands), please join us. We can always find a way for willing hands and hearts to contribute.

We also have plans to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Temple B’rith Kodesh’s founding with a series of events throughout the upcoming year. Watch for details in the bulletin and on-line.

At the same time, we are working to introduce our new financial support model for TBK, Give To Your Heart’s Content. Our first town meeting was held recently, and, paraphrasing the old Yogi Berra line, “Ninety percent were in favor of the new model, while the other half were undecided.”

I hope you’ll take the time to learn about the new model in upcoming meetings and through our Web site and other media. I also hope you’ll actively participate as you are moved to do so. It represents the future of TBK, and has proven itself across dozens of URJ congregations of all sizes and geographies. Not a single congregation that has adopted this model has expressed interest in going back to a traditional dues model.

Laura and I and our family wish you a sweet, peaceful and prosperous 5779. See you in Temple!

WHAT IS LIFE & LEGACY?

LIFE & LEGACY is a partnership of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester, Temple B’rith Kodesh and other synagogues and organizations that promotes after-lifetime giving to benefit Jewish enti-ties. Through training, support and monetary incentives LIFE & LEGACY motivates Jewish organizations to integrate legacy giving into their philanthropic culture in order to assure Jewish tomorrows.

WHY LIFE & LEGACY?

• To cultivate a culture of legacy giving. • To foster camaraderie and respect among Jewish organizations. • To give generous and forward-thinking members of the Jewish community an opportunity to express their passion, purpose and commitment to the future of Temple B’rith Kodesh and the community’s most valued Jewish organizations.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

In one way or another your life is rooted in Jewish experiences connecting you to the Jewish community. Chances are you already support Jewish charitable organizations, but have you included these organizations in your will or estate plan? By leaving a legacy, you can assure that the traditions and institutions that mean so much to you today will exist for future generations.

By making a legacy commitment you can:• Convey your commitment to being Jewish.• Express values instilled in you by your parents and grandparents.• Perpetuate the Jewish traditions you cherish.• Preserve the programs and services of Temple B’rith Kodesh and other organizations that support Jewish life in Rochester.

By making your legacy commitment now, or sharing with the community that you have already done so, those organizations to whom you make a legacy commitment have the opportunity to secure an incentive grant from the Grinspoon Foundation.

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

All of us, regardless of age, wealth or affiliation, have the ability to leave a legacy. Your legacy gift of any size can be customized and structured to fit your dreams, lifestyle, family and financial needs. You can provide support for a partic-ular organization or area of interest.

Leaving a legacy is simple. Some options include:

• Bequest in a will• Gift of Life Insurance• Gift of IRA or Pension Funds• Gift of cash or assets• Charitable Gift Annuity• Charitable Remainder Trust

We hope that you will show your support for TBK now, by making a Legacy gift for the future. For more information, contact me at (585) 244-7060. Thank you.

Welcoming the Stranger by Josh Herz

In response to TBK’s brit/covenant com-mitment to refugees and immigrants, the Social Action Committee has partnered with No One Left Behind. Part of our response was the creation of a Caring Circle for refugee/immigrant families.

Learning how to swim, scheduling a dental check-up, taking the bus, going to the library – a very small subset of the many things we’ve all learned to take for granted over the years. To say nothing of speaking English with some degree of fluency! As members of a Caring Circle we have a new-found appreciation of what it takes when we’re helping someone else acquire these new skills. What a gift to be able to lend a hand, each in our own small way, and witness the progress of our friends.

This is what the No One Left Behind Caring Circle does at TBK with a newly arrived Afghan family of 6. What an opportunity to honor the mitzvah of “welcoming the stranger”, which is repeated more times than any other in Torah. What a lovely way for us to “pay it forward”, given many of our own relatively recent histories – via parents, grandparents or great-grandparents – as newcomers to this country. Those in the TBK Caring Circle take lots of pleasure in our warm relationships with this fam-ily, and we welcome others to help out in the future.

Josh Herz is a member of the Social Action Committee, and with Margie Searl, one of the Conveners of TBK Caring Circle

One of the many things I’m grateful for as a Jew, is the ability to start over each new year with a clean slate. Rosh Hasha-nah provides an incredible opportunity to look back at our highs and lows of the previous year, and to purposefully design a new start.

Rosh Hashanah even supplies the frame-work within which to evaluate and make the necessary changes. This holiday happily coincides with the start of a new school year as well. We’re given the chance to check out the past year with the benefit of hindsight and plan again.

This year we’ve added a series of enrich-ment classes to our menu of Jewish life and learning at TBK Religious School.

Art, Cooking, Drama, Hebrew games, Is-rael education, Music, Social Action, and Technology represent many entry points to one’s Jewish identity for children studying in our school. Each enrichment class provides a different perspective and way of learning for our students and their multiple intelligences.

At TBK we’re constantly striving to discover the magical button that opens up an exciting world for our kids. We love watching the happy interactions that take place daily between our kids and Jewish content!

Together with enrichment classes, we have also planned family education events, “Ask the rabbi” breakfasts, Grade level Shabbat services, Chai Mitzvah family education (5th Grade), Sukkah Decorating, school-wide holiday celebra-tions, and youth group fun. We’re also dedicating a brand new School Library and Sensory Room this year – thanks to the generosity of the Weinstein family’s Debra Lynn Fund.

Our success depends on a dynamic part-nership between our teachers, students and parents – please spoil us with your presence at our school this year!!

Wishing you a very happy and healthy New Year!!

High Holy Day Music As we get ready for this special time of year, a few notes:

Many of the melodies are very different from what we are used to hearing at our weekly Shabbat services. The traditional chants and melodic patterns that we hear in our liturgy are called nusach. The term nusach literally means “version.” It is also a musical term, reflecting the modality of music that is specific to a particular place in the service, time of day, day of the week, or in this case a specific holiday of the year. The nusach melody is another reminder to us both musically and spiritually that the holiday has indeed arrived. At TBK, we use the nusach for several prayers in our High Holy Day services: Chatzi Kaddish, Barchu, and Mi Chamocha are a few examples of places where the holiday nusach is heard.

Also, a reminder of something new we started last year, along with our new machzor/prayer book: Most of our special High Holy Day services now start with the choir singing a niggun or little melody. This melody is the signal to find your seat so we can get started. As you hear the repetitive melody, please feel free to start singing along to help us create a sense of warmth as part of our congregation and holy community.

Our TBK High Holy Day Choir has been busy rehearsing for the inspirational melodies that you will soon hear. Our accompanist, Anna Maimine, has been hard at work with Jason Berger and the choir to prepare. Our deep appreciation goes to Jason and Anna and the entire choir for their meaningful work at this season.

It is my hope that this deeply beautiful music we hear this time of year can help the holidays be more meaningful for you and your family and our entire congregation. I wish all of you a sweet and healthy 5779.
