Abstract

� ‘"Social Networking Sites of Web 2.0 such

as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace

have taken web collaboration to a new

level. Addiction to the use of online

interactivity, blogging, and vlogging has

become apparent worldwide. Appropriate

use of such tools will empower the leaders

of the future. This talk will discuss about the

web 2.0 tools such as Wikis, RSS web

feeds, folksonomies, video sharing sites,

and some tips for succesfull blogging".

Web 2.0

‘Web 2.0’ describes the changing trends in the use of World Web technology and Web design that aim to enhance

creativity, communication and functionality of the Web

Web 2.0� Web 2.0 represents the next generation

of Web applications, for myriad purpose encompassing accounting, business planning, marketing and networking.

� Technology tools:

Web services, social

networking sites, Web feeds,

podcasts, blogs,

viral videos , etc.

The Middle Children of Web 2.0

� Most of are familiar with popular Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, podcasts and social network sites (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace).

� Some of those lesser-known tools:◦ Wikis

◦ RSS Web Feeds

◦ Web Services

◦ Folksonomies

◦ Video Sharing Sites

Wikis� A page or collection of Web pages that enable

anyone who accesses them to modify or

contribute content.

� Best-known examples:

◦ The online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

� Company might use wiki to create a central

database of online knowledge on particular topics:

◦ information technology, regulatory issues or successful

sales practices (everyone in the organization can contribute).

RSS Web Feeds� “Web feed” formats are used to publish frequently

update content such as blogs, podcasts, video or news stories in a standard format, sending them out on a regular schedule to users.

� benefit publishers by allowing them to syndicate content in an automatic fashion.

� help users by creating a standard way to receive updated content from Web sites, or to combine feeds from many sites into one place.

� RSS: Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary

Web Services� AKA “cloud” computing

� Represent software you access and use over the Internet, rather than the kind you download to hard drives or workstations.

� Provide a way of outsourcing function you once performed in your own organization/

� offering the advantages of “renting” rather than owning business applications.

Cloud Computing

� The concept generally incorporates:

◦ Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

◦ Platform as a Service (PaaS)

◦ Software as a Service (SaaS)

� Other recent technologies that rely on the

Internet to satisfy the computing needs of users.

� Cloud computing services often provide common

business applications online that are accessed

from a web browser, while the software and data

are stored on the servers.

Cloud Computing (cont’d)� Service Provider Companies◦ e.g: Vmware, Sun Microsystems, IBM, Amazon, Google,

Microsoft, Yahoo.

� Architecture and Infrastructure◦ Consists of reliable services delivered through data

centers and built on servers with different levels of virtualization technologies.

◦ The services are accessible anywhere that provides access to networking infrastructure. Clouds often appear as single points of access for all consumers' computing needs.

◦ Commercial offerings are generally expected to meet Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and SLAs.

Folksonomies

� Collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing, and social tagging.

� A way of indexing or “tagging” online content to better categorize and organize it.

� Generated not just by experts, but by creators or users of content as well.

� User-chosen keywords are used to organize content instead of a defined classification vernacular.

Video sharing sites

� Sites such as You Tube or Blip.TV,

◦ allow people to upload and share their

promotional or informational videos with the

public at large

� Companies often use the sites as a way to market their businesses and drive more traffic to their Web sites.

Appropriate use of Tools� Successful blogging is about more than writing;

it’s about creating a forum for dialogue and a sense of community (content and usefulness of Information.

� Start a blog with a purpose. “Despite all the hype around Web 2.0, not everyone needs a blog”.

� Question for those who do have value to add, before moving forward:� Who is the target audience for my blog?

� What unique voice or point of view do I have to offer?

� How will I build my following so people actually find the value that I provide?

Tips for Bloggers1. Write regularly.

2. Remember that anyone can read it.

3. Be specific.

4. Do not use your blog as a self-promotional or advertising tool.

5. Do not link to gossipers and stay away from complainers.

6. Remember that “like attracts like” – be where the positive energy is flowing.

7. Be conscientious about spelling and grammar – your credibility is at stake.

8. Seek out and link to powerful people.

9. Practice good etiquette – be gracious and practice reciprocity.

10. Acknowledge people for their input, advice, introductions and referrals.
