THE NEWSCHLOSS-ALMBAHN LIFT! Turn old into new. BUT ALSO ADD VALUE.

It’s now over 50 years old. Time, in other words, for the Schlossalm funicular in Bad Hofgastein to enter well-earned retirement. The old funicular, with its iconic lettering on the side, is almost a legend – just like the former funicular in Innsbruck up the

Hungerburg or the one that still carries visitors up to the fortress in Salzburg.

Modern with ADDED VALUE.Style is a question of taste. Or vice versa? With that in mind, the Gastein lift company mulled over a number of options, eventually commissioning the Salzburg architectural firm of Innerhofer oder Innerhofer to create a spectacular ensemble consisting of a val-ley-, mid- and mountain station of exposed concrete and aluminum composite panels. Just as important as making it modern was doing it right. The funicular is being repla-ced by a mono-cable gondola with 10-passenger cabins. This also saves skiers having to change lifts at the Kitzstein mid-station, adding to the convenience of your holiday experiences as a whole. But that isn’t the only advantage of these heated bright-oran-ge cabins.

Nonstop TO YOUR SKIING ENJOYMENT.The time factor also plays a significant role: Whereas up to now skiers needed quite some time and patience to make their way from the valley floor at 850 m above sea level up to the snowy elevations at around 2000 m, now the travel time has been reduced to just 9 minutes. The focal points for this modern transportation experience: the new valley and mountain terminals. And they definitely pack a punch: In addition to the lift station itself, the building of the valley station also houses a sports shop, ski school, ski rental center as well as a restaurant. Whereas skiers used to have to walk through an underpass below the main road in order to reach the funicular, the new valley station lies right next to the remodeled and restructured parking facilities. Meaning that those wobbly adventures making your way up and down the staircases in ski boots are now a thing of the past – in future, all winter sports fans can look forward to completely stress-free & relaxed days of skiing in Gastein, in Salzburger Land.

There’s one thing everybody agrees on: After operating for over 50 years, the funicular more than paid off the original investment. So definitely no complaints. But

it is also in the nature of things that machinery ages and tends to eat up greater resources than those required by modern technology. In terms of energy efficiency and sus-tainability, along with travel time and passenger capacity, the Schlossalm had its best days quite some time ago.

That said – setting aside our nostalgic sentimentality – pre-serving the natural and cultural world of the Schlossalm and Gastein Valley played an important role in deciding to write a new chapter in mountain-lift history. And the mo-no-cable gondola was the means we chose: At each of the lift stations, the individual gondolas are decoupled from the cable, fed onto a fixed suspended track, then accele-rated in the opposite direction and recoupled to the lift ca-ble. In this way, the passenger capacity is increased from 1400 to 3000 people per hour, while using more or less the same amount of energy – since the cable can circulate sig-nificantly faster than when the cabins remain permanently attached. Not to mention the fact that, in this case, we are comparing a gondola with a funicular.

A VISIT FROM SAINT NICK AND KRAMPUS

With the help of their eerie hand-carved wooden masks, they scare everyone who wasn’t good during the year. Though of course, only at the behest of Saint Nicholas himself!The ancient Krampus tradition has been preserved in a very original and authentic form here in Gastein Val-ley. Over 100 different Krampus groups, known as Passen, make their way through Gastein Valley accompa-nied by Nicholas, and will even pay us a visit at our hotels on December 5, 2018.

December 24 is traditio-nally known as Bachltag in Gastein. On that day, families commonly add a dish known as Bachlkoch to their Christmas menu.

Bring milk to a boil, dust in the flour through a sieve, simmer until it reaches a porridge con-sistency, then add the butter and salt, bring back to a boil, then serve with honey and/or jam!

THE RÄUCHERN TRADITION

Especially during the Christmas season, in the Alpine region – including here in Gastein – people commonly burn incense in their homes. And on December 28, a special blend of incense is burned in order to drive away demons. Precisely how that’s done correctly is demonstrated by incense expert, Friedrich Kaindlstorfer, from the Center for Traditional European Medicine in Bad Kreuzen.

Magically beautiful, pure and simple! Glide gently through the pristine countryside – along the banks of the idyllic Gasteiner Ache – past picturesque villages – into valleys blanketed deep in snow – with the snowcap-ped peaks of the Hohe Tauern range your constant companions.

BAD HOFGASTEIN Alpenpark Loipe: 1.5 km, snowmaking, floodlit until 10:30 PM, laser biathlon. Sportplatz Loipe: 2.5 km, easy trail. Achen Loipe: 4 km, easy to intermediate.

Angertal Loipe: 3.25 km and 6.5 km, intermediate.

BAD GASTEIN Böcksteiner Loipe: elev. 1100 m, 5.5 km, easy trail, floodlit until 10:30 PM. Sportgastein trails: elev. 1600 m, 1.7 km, 2.4 km and 5.1 km ranging in difficulty.

In Sportgastein, you will find the highest point in the Amadé ski area at almost 2700 m above sea level. This elevation “virtually” guarantees sensational freeride experiences, with fields of powder that seem to go on forever! There’s good reason why this playground is the favorite spot of Sandra Lahnsteiner – one of the world’s best freeriders!

SOME ride the lifts up to their freeride adventure. While OTHERS prefer to make the ascent under the po-wer of their own muscles, savoring the slower pace and total fascination of the complete SKI TOUR expe-rience! And indeed, it is as if Gastein Valley was predestined for ski tours such as these. Surrounded by a unique mountain world, the summits invite ski tourers to explore and conquer them!
