Project SummaryScotland Neck Education and Recreation Center was established in the community on February 3,

1997, as a place that provides recreational services for children of all ages. Currently the center hosts activities for children ages 6-13 between the hours of 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Tutoring services are also provided during the school year as well as in the summer through volunteer service during these same hours. Currently, in the Scotland Neck community, there is a lack of program availability for children ages13-17.

It has been the goal of the Scotland Neck Education and Recreation Foundation to provide a safe haven after school to the students that it serves. Through this grant, it is our goal to extend this opportunity to older children in the community. This program will create tiered mentoring opportunities for the high school students to mentor middle school students and middle school students to mentor elementary school students. An adult mentor that is either an educator or a community leader will oversee each mentor group. In addition, children will be provided with workshops on culture building, social behavior, digital story-telling, drug abuse and gang awareness. Students will also continue to receive tutorial services and participate in a summer program that will provide training programs form community members to fill needed gaps in the community.

The program is called a tiered program because the upper level middle and high school students that are receiving mentoring services from our community partners, will serve as volunteers in the SNERF Recreation Center, filling a much needed void of able-bodied workers.

Explanation of GrantIn order to meet the needs of the youth in our community, we are applying for a grant in the amount of $60,000 over three years. This will allow us to expand the services provided by the SNERF and reach the neglected teenage children in Scotland Neck.
