February 1, 2019 Dear Scarborough Middle School Families, The 5210 planning committee is very excited to share our upcoming New Year’s Challenge for our students. We will be addressing two goals to help improve their overall health and well being. We invite you to join them in this quest. Our first goal is to encourage your child to increase their water intake. We know that our bodies are roughly 70 - 80 % water and according to the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health more than half of all teens are not getting enough water. Increased water consumption has proven to treat and prevent a headache, improve digestion, and increase brain function, athletic performance, and energy levels. Our second goal is to decrease student screen time. A recent 60 Minutes report by the National Institute of Health found significant differences in the brains of some kids who use smartphones, tablets, and video games indicating a premature thinning of the cerebral cortex. The cortex is responsible for processing information from the five senses.

OUR 5210 SCHOOL PLAN : Each student will be offered a free water bottle (BPA free, top shelf dishwasher safe) in Crew and encouraged to carry it throughout the day. Students “caught” drinking water will be rewarded with stickers for their bottles. To support screen time we will again be participating in the national “Screen-Free Week”, April 29 - May 6. During this time we hope to encourage our students to unplug from digital entertainment and spend free time reading, playing, creating, exploring and connecting with family and friends. Attached you will find the goals from “Maine Health LET’S GO! 5210” https://mainehealth.org/lets-go (5 fruits/vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of exercise and 0 sugary drinks a day). To support this challenge our Health and Wellness classes will be addressing individual goals which fall within the 5210 guidelines.

VALUABLE RESOURCES Do you know how to monitor, limit and remotely turn off your child’s phone use?

● iPhones have a built-in screen time feature. You might want to check out the link listed in the SMS Family News - https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/iphone-screen-time-how-to-use

● With other phones simply search the internet to find a free “Screen Time Parental Control” app that will be compatible to your phone.

Do you know how to monitor your child’s lunch and snack selections at school?

1. Log on to www.schoolpaymentportal.com (You can also access this on the SPS site under

Nutrition Program - Online Payments)

2. Click on “Parent Log-In”

3. Under “Cafeteria Balance/Transaction Information” you will see your student(s) listed. To the

left of their name it says “transactions” in blue. Click on this link and it will bring you to their

transaction history. It has the time the item was purchased, the item, the cost, and the student’s

remaining balance.

Want to help your child monitor their water intake?

Download the app “Waterlogged” found on the iTunes App Store here .
