TAKE THE LONG WAY
Dallas, Texas, Nov. 13 - 15, 2009
2 LoopsThis ride begins on the west hal o the
large loop. Leave out o Cleburne, ride
through to Granbury and then head back
south on Highway 67 to Glen Rose. The
small loop is out o Glen Rose through
Dinosaur Valley and then returns up the
67 to Glen Rose. Then, its back north
on the 67 to the second hal o the large
loop through to Cleburne. You will have a
chance to visit Acton, the site where Davey
Crocketts amily is buried. Also check out
Dinosaur Valley, the nice historic bridge
over the Brazos River and other scenic
spots. The total trip is roughly 143 miles
and takes about 2.5 hours. Food and gas
are abundant on the route.
San Mateo, Calif., Nov. 20 - 22, 2009
Woodside and Portola Valley (Highway
1, Skyline Boulevard)
This run has a little o everything long
ast sweepers, tight, torturous and steep
downhill twisties, long highway stretchesand some smooth quick curves. Bonny
Doon Road is a blast well paved, good
camber, and a gradual inclination up the
mountain. The transition to Pine Flat is
natural but looks wrong just let the
ront wheel guide you. The sharp right
rom Empire Grade to Highway 236 cameup by surprise though, and or the rst
quarter-mile we were sure we were on
the wrong road but could not nd a quick
place to turn around. We pretty much just
used gravity going down this pockmarked
and steep road, letting second and third
do most o the braking. Toward the bot-
tom, the surace improved and we could
drive the corners instead o ride around
them again. But the corners got snarky:
the apexes became more triangular, and
a couple o decreasing-radius curves
popped up in unexpected places. It was
slow through Big Basin, which was under-standable.

TAKE THE LONG WAYLong Beach, Calif., Dec. 4 - 6, 2009
Angeles Crest Highway (SR2),
Big Tujunga Canyon Road
Angeles Crest Highway is likely the sport-
bike capitol o the greater Los Angelesarea (i not all o Southern Caliornia). As
expected, Angeles Crest has every sort o
turn that makes sportbike riders salivate
sweepers, double apex, decreasing
and increasing radii all uphill or down-
hill. As you might imagine, Angeles Crest
must be ridden within your limits. The raw
nature o this road simply invites throttle-
twisting like nothing else. Its ar too easy
to be caught out during a spirited ride.
Seattle, Wash., Dec. 11 - 13, 2009
Around the Hood Canal
One o the best roads or bikes in the
U.S. is Route 101 along the Hood Canal.
Take the erry to Bainbridge Island then
head south to the end o the canal. This
loop will take you back to Bainbridge.
There are great roads or the most part,
with lots o eating opportunities and lots
o company in the summer. A 20-mile sec-
tion o Route 101 was being re-paved as
we went to press.
Sightseeing destinations near the Long Beach Conven-tion Center include The Queen Mary (which oers dailytours) and The Aquarium o the Pacifc. The Pike atRainbow Harbor is also chock-ull o restaurants and
things to do. www.motorcycleshows.com
