album a cherry on festival cake kyneton
Cherrywood, a drawcard of this years Kyneton Music Festival, is launching its debut album at Kynetons Stockroom gallery next week. Festival committee member Robert Jones said Cherrywood was a hit at the festival held in March. They were pretty happy with the audiences. We had talked about bringing them back.
Cherrywoods album, titled Book of Matches, features tales of lightning strikes, broken hearts, bar stools and prisons, all
brought to life by band members Chris Drane, Josh Seymour, Tim Durkin and Rob Daly (pictured).
Mr Jones said the line-up for next years festival would be finalised this month.
There were about 85 applications from artists wanting to play at the festival, which will run from February 28-March 2.
Cherrywoods launch is 8pm at Stockroom, 98 Piper Street, Kyneton. Doors open at 7pm. \

Dodo extinct, Mauritian food notRestaurants worshipping at the temple of Mauritian cuisine are slim pickins in Melbourne but its a food style that many are turning on to. That may be because the food is a melting pot of Africa, Portugal, France, China and India and its own uniqueness just like Melbourne itself. An island nation off the African coast, Mauritius was home to the extinct dodo and uninhabited until the early 1500s when waves of settlers began arriving with their spices and food staples in tow.Nowadays, Mauritian food is considered one of the greats of Creole cooking, with tomatoes, onions, garlic and chillies the most common ingredients.Rougaille, a widely used sauce made from these ingredients and spices, accompanies many vegetable, meat and seafood dishes, as do achards (pickles), dhal and rice. Turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves are used liberally, a salute to African and Indian influences. European herbs such as
thyme are also uniquely used in Mauritian curries and, despite Indian sway, coconut milk is rarely used, but unusual meats and seafood, such as duck or octopus, often feature.Served hot or cold with rice, pickles and dhal, vindaye is a common and popular dish of fried fish or octopus preserved in mustard seeds, chilli, garlic, oil and vinegar.Street food snacks (gojack) pick up on African and Indian influences, with one favourite the gateaux piment, a falafel-like fried, spiced split-pea cake; another is dholl puris, a flatbread spread with a thin layer of yellow split peas, rolled up and served with pickles, vegies and chutney. And the French, of course, left their dessert footprint in tarts filled with bananas and almonds, and napolitaines raspberry shortbreads sandwiched with jam. There are plenty of reasons to have Mauritian food on your road-less-travelled list and youd be a dodo if you miss the turn.

Licensed to serveA full-bodied red wine, considered a perfect match with southern Italian-style lasagne, can now be ordered with this classic dish from Riddells Pizza and Pasta Italian Restaurant in Riddells Creek.Owners Stephen and Connie DAndrea have announced they are now fully licensed and have a good selection of wines, beers and spirits.Chef Connie, assisted by Pietro Giovanni, has put together a fine cast of Italian cuisine favourites that she feels passionate about. We use traditional recipes to produce an extra-special marinara and our Calabrese sauce is one southern Italians will recognise as being very authentic, Connie says. Our gnocchi is always a hit and we have enough gluten-free dishes to cater for people who need them.Lightly pan-fried salt and pepper calamari kicks off the entre list, and the focaccia pizza with garlic and herbs is simple but popular.Perhaps choose a crisp white wine to bring out the flavours of the main course risotto,
singing with chicken, mushroom and spinach; or a peppery shiraz to complement a 400-gram porterhouse, grilled to preference and served with a sauce of choice. Its hard to resist Italian desserts and Connie and Pietro dial up the temptation factor with chocolate, strawberry or lemon gelati. And for true decadence, the hot chocolate torte hits the spot: warm chocolate Italian cake served with chocolate sauce, ice cream and cream.True lovers of generous Italian hospitality, Connie and Stephen offer customers VIP membership, rewarding loyalty with discounts. They also cater for birthday parties, Christmas functions and most other events.
Riddells Pizza and Pasta Italian Restaurant, at 82a Main Road, Riddells Creek, opens 5pm-late Tuesday-Sunday. Inquiries: 5428 6076.
Connie and Stephen offer traditional Italian fare, which can now be enjoyed with a glass of wine.

There are many decisions that you will need to make when investing in real estate. One of those
decisions, for those buying rental properties, is whether or not you need a property manager. The
benefits of a good property management service are quite numerous. They eliminate the need for tenants
to have your phone number. A property management service is able to handle many things for you while
letting you get on with your life. Property management services also have ready access to maintenance
people that can handle many of the things that go wrong with rental properties. Its nice to know that you
wont be getting up bleary eyed in the morning calling around for a plumber on the first exceptionally cold
day of winter. A property management service is qualified to take care of tenants fail to pay rent promptly
. This is after all a business and while you can relate to the circumstances that leave some people unable
to pay their rent you need the income from their property in order to make your bills. It's much easier to
leave some of the less pleasant tasks to someone else. Property managers also handle the advertising
for your property and the cleaning up and retouches that are necessary between tenants. If you are going
to invest in real estate, this is one of the most worry free ways you can do it. We at Dunlop Real Estate
offer full and experienced real estate letting and property management services. If we can assist you on
any real estate matter, feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 at any time or call into our
friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a discussion.

Theres many a twist and turn and up and down in this tri-level house which is a fine thing if one is looking to break out of the common mould and embrace
charming quirkiness and loads of soul. The homes history of adding new spaces is easily read but doesnt detract from its harmony and practicality of zoning; living areas combine on entry level, bedrooms on the lower two.
Its hard not to start with the gardens
because theyre quite a feature of the 1000-square-metre block. The dense cottage style of the front garden continues out back and the riot of bulbs, magnolia, cliveas, roses, colourful perennials and shrubs, a hebe hedge, clematis creeping over an arch, and multi-level paved walkways put on a delightful display.
And to sit amongst it all, there are a couple of nooks, including a small, secluded deck on the south side and a brick-paved spot at the back.
Now the house. Three living areas include a
large multi-purpose space on entry, a carpeted lounge room through in-wall sliders, and a step-down sunroom with wood heater.
The tiled kitchen has plenty of timber cupboards, a brekky bench, two pantries (one walk-in, the other with two doors) and Blanco 900mm underbench oven and gas cooktop. A separate toilet and a laundry with closet are next door. Seven wooden steps head down to a study nook, secondary bedroom, bathroom, separate toilet, and the main bedroom with feature wall, walk-in wardrobe, built-in closet
and en suite. Seven more steps descend to two large bedrooms with back garden views; one has a door to steps down to the back garden. The sunroom opens to an elevated north-side deck with pretty views over fields, rolling hills and Mount Macedon beyond. Pour a red and kick back.
A short walk from everything, the property has a split-system, natural gas connection, solar panels, a carport with storage space behind two roller doors, under-house/deck storage and a water tank. \ CAROLE LEVY

32 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 8, 2013
Each year as the weather warms up we look towards summer trends in wine. In the past few years it has been savoury
ros, barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc or the new wave of lean, refreshing chardonnay.
Im no oracle, but I reckon this year its time to turn back the clock and start drinking an often-forgotten, highly refreshing white: the semillon sauvignon blanc blend. It isnt as fashionable as straight sauvignon blanc, or as pretty as pink, but its a bloody good drink.
I must admit to being guilty of ignoring this blend, too. Rather than put the sem sav samples that arrive straight into the fridge, they tend to pile up at our house until I line a bunch up for tasting.
Every time I promise myself to drink more of it. This year Im going to stick to the promise. If youre getting a bit sick of sav blanc or looking for a change as many people tell me they are the sem/sav blend, or sav/sem in many cases, makes a really good change.
Theres one slight problem with these wines tracking them down. Semillon sauvignon blancs waning popularity means theyre literally disappearing from our shelves. A few years ago major wine shops had sections dedicated to semillon sauvignon blanc blends now youre likely to find them filed under
other whites.Theyve been doing the blend in the
illustrious Bordeaux region of France for hundreds of years, and Margaret River, arguably the home of Australian Bordeaux-style wines, has been doing it for 30 years.
The success of pinot noir and chardonnay in the Yarra Valley in recent years has taken the focus away from the fact the region was first planted with such grapes as cabernet
sauvignon, merlot and semillon by the regions early pioneers. These still excel.
When Margaret River was identified as a high-quality, fine-wine producing region, particularly for the Bordeaux varieties, people ran around planting cabernet sauvignon,
merlot, cabernet franc, and for whites they went for semillon and sauvignon
blanc for white wine, says Margaret River winemaker Brad Wehr, who makes a semillon sauvignon blanc under the Wine By Brad label.
I like semillon and sauvignon blanc on their own but, when you stick the two together, you start to think, well, thats the best way to have them. Semillon is more in the line of citrus fruit characters and sauvignon blanc is more in line with tropical, pineapple characters, and the pair together provide a real

fruit salad cocktail. Its not just the flavours that combine so
neatly, but the steely acid of semillon balances out sav blancs often fruit-forward structure.
In terms of structural elements, I call semillon the base wine, which forms a cushiony mattress that provides a bed for the
sauvignon blanc to sit on, says Wehr.In the nose department, the semillon
has the citrus, grassy characters and sauvignon has the higher notes the tropicals and florals and together they make a great blend. \

There cant be many devices that are as technically advanced, or built to finer tolerances, than the diesel motors
coming out of Europe. They are remarkable. The key to smooth running is breaking the
fuel into the smallest droplets possible, and its done by increasing the injection pressure at the cylinder. Fuel enters the cylinders of modern European diesels at 2050 Bar. How much is that? Were you to balance a Land Cruiser on a single stiletto heel, youd be about there.
And theyre made to run more quietly by a pilot burn, injecting a tiny amount of fuel about enough to sit on a pin head to start the burn before the main injection of fuel follows a millisecond or two later. A jet travelling at 1000 km/h would cover 25 centimetres in the time between the pilot burn and main burn.
Getting all this to happen a couple of thousand times a minute takes incredibly fine timing and production tolerances. Fuel channels entering the cylinder are a micron wide. Human hair is anything from 20 to 60 microns thick.
It also takes the right fuel. We didnt get the good European diesel motors here until 2005. Until then our diesel fuel carried too much sulphur for them. The Americans were a couple of years behind us.
Until lately, Japanese diesel motors have been the almost-exclusive province of 4WD and commercial vehicles but, to sell
cars in serious volumes into Europe, Japanese manufacturers have to produce diesels that
not only comply with Euro emission regulations but are also competitive.
Theyre getting there, but there |is still refinement to achieve. Mazda is now making a push into the technology in passenger cars and SUVs.The 2.2-litre diesel in the Mazda 6
is a bit noisier and not quite as smooth as those coming out of Europe, but its every bit as economical and thats probably enough
for the bulk of buyers. If you can live with a little extra clatter as the car idles, and deeper, growlier induction noise when you accelerate, this car is a definite proposition, even at a premium of about $3000 on the equivalent petrol model.
The Mazda 6 is such a good thing anyway that getting the bonus of brilliant economy becomes very attractive. It looks good, drives beautifully and has generous cabin space, and its a pretty good deal.
