Smoking During Pregnancy!
By: Andrea Ruiz
Pregnant women pass any chemicals they take in (from food, tobacco, alcohol and so on) to their unborn
children through the placenta.
If all pregnant women in this
country stopped
smoking, there would be an estimated: •11 percent reduction in stillbirths •5 percent reduction in
newborn deaths
•Babies born of mothers who smoke frequently during pregnancy are on the average 7 ounces lighter than other babies.•Babies of smokers tend to have lower birth weights and a higher chance of being born prematurely, which results in increased health risks.•Smoking nearly doubles a woman's risk of having a low birth weight baby.
Babies of smokers are more likely to become smokers themselves in
later years.
Smoking by children and adolescents hastens the onset of lung function decline during late adolescence and early adulthood.
In general, pregnant smokers eat more than pregnant nonsmokers,
yet their babies weigh less than babies of nonsmokers.
If a woman stops smoking
even by the end of her
second trimester of pregnancy,
she is no more likely to have
a low-birth weight baby
than a woman who never smoked.
Maternal smoking during pregnancy and
exposure to secondhand
smoke in infancy double the risk of
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
(SIDS).
Smoking while pregnant increases the chances of spontaneous abortions
Strive for this…
Not this!
Don’t smoke when you’re pregnant, it’s that simple.
