1 THE AREA OF APPLICATION & SAFETY WARNINGS 1.1 The YDA309 measures the opacity and coefficient of light absorption of diesel smoke. It is

optimised for free acceleration testing from the tailpipe of road vehicles. If it is used with an engine testbed additional equipment may be needed to protect the

smokemeter and to ensure a good measurement. The following points should be considered:

• Protection of the smokemeter against high pressures and entry of smoke when

powered down. • Protection of the smokemeter against high smoke temperatures. Note that the flexible

silicone hose supplied has a maximum temperature for intermittent use of 250 °C. • Condensation can be a significant problem from hot exhausts; a water trap may be

necessary. • Pulsations of pressure can interfere with exhaust sampling; a damping unit may be

necessary. • Adjustment of pressure may be necessary to ensure good sampling.

1.2 Beware of hot parts, in particular the probe which has been in the vehicle exhaust pipe. 1.3 Avoid breathing diesel fumes. Do not use the equipment indoors without exhaust extraction

equipment or adequate ventilation. 1.4 Switch off the engine when fitting speed and oil temperature sensors. Make sure trailing

leads do not make contact with moving parts of the engine. 1.5 Make sure the vehicle is securely parked with the handbrake on and gear in neutral before

making the connections and performing the test. 1.6 Do not use the power unit outside; it should remain inside near a power socket.

3.1 Attach the printer to the smokemeter, using the thumbscrew located under the printer lid.

See illustration 1 3.2 Attach the smokemeter to the trolley using the handwheel See illustration 2. 3.3 Connect the printer cable to the smokemeter. See illustration 3. 3.4 Connect the handset cable to the connector on the front of smokemeter. The handset can be parked on the lip to the right of the printer when not in use. See illustration 4 Do not leave the handset in direct hot sunlight. The display darkens and may become

difficult to read when hot. 3.5 Position the power unit near a power socket if possible. Try to avoid long trailing extension cables which can be a safety hazard. Do not use the power unit where it may get wet. Connect the smokemeter power cable to the terminals under the power unit lid, and position the

rubber boot on the cable in the exit slot. Fasten down the lid. See illustration 5 If the smokemeter is to be powered from a vehicle, connect the red lead to battery positive. If the

battery is 24V, use the 24V, not a 12V tapping. Start the engine before switching on the smokemeter. 3.6 Connect the flexible hose to the smokemeter. See illustration 3 3.7 Select the correct probe for the exhaust. Generally, use the 10mm diameter probe for exhausts with a diameter less than 50mm. Connect the probe to the flexible hose. 3.8 If a vertical exhaust pipe is to be monitored, insert the probe handle into the clamp at the end of

telescopic pole and tighten the handwheel to lock. One of two positions can be selected; for angled or for vertical exhaust pipes.

Position the flexible hose in the guide as shown in illustration 6. Note that the telescopic pole is an optional extra. 3.9 If used indoors, a waste pipe can be connected to the smokemeter outlet to direct smoke to an

extraction system. A 30mm diameter 2m long pipe can be used. A direct connection to the extraction system must not be made; a vacuum break must be included.

3.10 An optical filter is provided to allow a check of the optical system to be made. See section 11 for details on its use. The filter is stored under a hood on the side of the light sensor box. It is attached by a thumb

screw. It is important that the filter is in place and the screw done up tight when using the smokemeter.

An indication of low pressure during the test may otherwise result.

3.11 If speed or oil temperature is required, connect the speed unit cable to the front of the

smokemeter, and position the box in the engine compartment where it will not foul any moving parts. See illustration 7. For oil temperature measurement, remove the dipstick and use it to set the insertion depth of the probe by sliding along the adjustable position stop.

Use the locking screw to fix the adjustment. Insert the oil temperature probe into the dipstick hole, and connect the cable to the box. See illustration 7.

For speed measurement with clamp-on sensor, connect the correct size sensor to the high pressure pipe as shown in illustration 7.

See section 12.5 for more advice on using clamp-on sensors. Connect the clamp-on sensor to the box using the lead provided. If the optical sensor is to used for speed measurement, connect it to the box in place of the

clamp-on sensor lead. Stick a reflective patch to the engine crankshaft pulley. Position and clamp the optical sensor to point at the reflective patch. An indicator on the sensor body flashes on when the patch is seen, as an aid to correct alignment.

Take care to avoid cables and items of clothing coming into contact with moving parts. 3.12 Position the smokemeter near the vehicle exhaust so that it is not enveloped in smoke when

used. When the probe is inserted, bend the pipe away from the exhaust flow to avoid unnecessary heating and contamination of the flexible hose. See illustration 8.

4. THE OPERATOR CONTROLS The smokemeter is very simple to operate with an ON/OFF switch on the front and a push button

on the handset. Instructions and results are displayed on the handset. The handset has 10m of cable so that the operator can view the display and control the

smokemeter whilst sitting in the driving seat. (An extension cable is available if 10m is not long enough) For control of the smokemeter, two handset push button actions are recognised; CLICK and HOLD. CLICK means press and release the button in less than half of one second. HOLD means press and hold the button until the display changes (longer than 1 second). The flowcharts below show when CLICK or HOLD are required. A keypad is supplied to allow entry of data for the printout. Note that a test can be performed without using the keypad; data entry is an optional part of the

sequence.

5 VEHICLE/DRIVER PREPARATION 5.1 Check that the vehicle has sufficient oil in the sump. 5.2 Check that the engine has no known problems, and has been properly maintained. 5.3 Check that the exhaust system has no significant leaks. 5.4 Check that the vehicle is parked on approximately level and firm ground. 5.5 Check that the parking brake is on and the engine out of gear. 5.6 Check that the vehicle engine is warm. 5.7 If the vehicle driver is to perform the accelerations, make sure that he understands when to press

and when to release the accelerator pedal and that the accelerator pedal must be pressed to the floor rapidly, but not violently.

this case, any data entered will not be sent for inclusion on the printout. 6.4 Click when PULL OUT THE PROBE/ CLICK is displayed to perform an automatic zero for smoke

measurement. The probe must not be inserted into the exhaust during the zero operation. If an error message is displayed, see section 7 ERROR MESSAGES. The message INSERT THE PROBE/ THEN CLICK indicates a successful zero operation. Insert

the probe into the exhaust. 6.5 At this stage a choice exists. Either CLICK to carry out a standard sequenced test. Or HOLD to enter VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC MODE described in 6.12. 6.6 Click the button to display CLICK = NON-TURBO 2.5/ HOLD = TURBO 3.0. Click the handset button if the vehicle has a normally aspirated engine.

Otherwise hold the button until the display changes. The appropriate smoke limit will be selected. This selection is not displayed if a smoke limit is entered

during the DATA ENTRY 6.7 The message WHEN MOTOR IS HOT/ THEN CLICK is displayed. If an oil temperature probe is connected, the oil temperature will also be displayed. Click to confirm that the engine is warm. Remember that rapid acceleration of a cold engine can cause damage. 6.8 CHECK MAX SPEED/ RPM=xxxx THEN CLICK is displayed. xxxx is the speed of the engine if a speed sensor is connected. Slowly increase the speed of the engine to maximum over a period of 5 to 10 seconds. Stop immediately if any problem is detected, or if the speed reading exceeds the maximum for the engine. . Release the accelerator to return to low idle.

Click to continue. If a message PRESSURE LOW/HIGH is displayed, the smokemeter indicates that the pressure of the smoke sample is not correct for a good measurement. Check that the probe is in the exhaust pipe.

Click to return to the CHECK MAX SPEED test and repeat. If the error message repeats, see the section ERROR MESSAGES. 6.9 The wait/accelerate/decelerate loop of between 4 and 10 tests has now started. A five seconds

wait period between accelerations is indicated by the countdown from 5. Rapidly press down the accelerator pedal as soon as the message indicates, and hold down for a maximum of 4 seconds, or until the message to return to idle is displayed. The captured peak smoke value is briefly displayed, then the wait countdown.

A minimum of 4 accelerations must be performed. If after this the results are stable (the last 4 with a spread of less than 0.5m-1 (or 10HSU) and the average of the last 4 is less than the limit, then the test is ended.

Otherwise one more test is requested, and the above conditions rechecked. This process is repeated until a maximum of 10 tests have been performed. 6.10 Click when the message PULL OUT THE PROBE/ THEN CLICK is displayed. The results will now be automatically printed.

12. FAULT FINDING 12.1 Smokemeter will not power up (Blower does not run, handset does not display)

If the power unit is being used, check that the on/off switch is illuminated to indicate 220V is present.

Check the protective trip on the front of the power unit is pushed in. If a voltmeter is available, check for 20 to 24V AC on the power supply terminals If a battery is being used, check for 12V DC at its terminals. 12.2 The blower runs, but the handset does not display and the printer will not paper feed when ‘P’ is

pressed on the keypad. Check the fuse located under the light sensor box.

Remove the light sensor box and unscrew the fuse located on the smokemeter end, below the exit hole for the cable.

The fuse is a 20 by 5mm 5 or 6A antisurge. Replace if faulty. 12.3 The handset does not display, or will only display LUCAS ATS DIESEL SMOKEMETER Check that the handset connector is fully inserted. If available, try with another handset.

Perform the following test on the printer. If this printer test is successful, then the fault almost certainly lies with handset or its cable, not in the smokemeter.

Switch on the smokemeter. After 4 seconds, press the F1 button on the keypad. Then press the ENTER button on the keypad 10 times. If a printout is produced, the smokemeter is correctly functioning. 12.4 Printer problems. Check that the printer connector is fully inserted. The print mechanism can be checked by performing a self test. HOLD the F1 button on the keypad whilst switching on. A self test pattern similar to that illustrated should be produced. This test only requires power from the smokemeter (no signals). Failure on this test indicates a problem in the printer

12.5 Speed reading problems with piezo clamp-on sensors. Check that the following advice is being followed. · Use the correct size sensor for the pipe.

· Remove paint, dirt, and grease from the pipe. If necessary, use abrasive paper to get clean smooth finish.

· Tighten the sensor firmly, but do not use a tool. · Connect the earth clip near the sensor on the same pipe.

· Check that the metal clip of the sensor (to which the cable connects) does not touch any metalwork.

· Position the sensor on a straight section of pipe, but not on a long section which may vibrate.

· Rotating the sensor on the pipe may improve the signal (but never rotate the sensor without first slackening the screw. Rotating a clamped sensor will damage it)

· Do not power the smokemeter from a 12V tapping of a 24V battery. The speed sensor may not function if this is done. Connect the smokemeter power to the 24V in this case.

· Keep spare sensors to allow quick identification of a defective sensor. . If access to the high pressure pipes is difficult, or a good signal cannot be obtained,

consider using an optical pickup. · Check low idle and maximum speeds using the USER DIAGNOSTIC TEST position

before starting the official test.

13. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

See illustration 14. A smoke sample from the vehicle exhaust enters the smokemeter via a smoke probe and flexible hose. Smoke enters at the centre of a heated smoke chamber, and flows towards each end. The air pressure system produces an ‘air curtain’ at both ends of the chamber, which directs the smoke away from the optics and into the smoke box. The mixture of air and smoke then leaves the smoke box via the waste outlet. The smokemeter is fitted with a light source (1) and a light sensor (2), which measure the light absorption in the chamber. The light sensor, smoke temperature sensor, and amplifiers are located on a circuit board in the light sensor box. The smokemeter contains 2 circuit boards, one for power supplies, the other to provide the measurement and sequence logic.
