Cognos RTM Enabling TechnologyStream Query Processing

• What’s a Stream?

– Continuous, unbounded, rapid, time-varying streams of data elements

• Examples of Streams?

– Sensor networks – RFIDs, wind power, ATMs

– Telecom – call activity, service order requests

– Financial applications – bank transactions, credit card transactions

– Supply chain – manufacturing, distribution

– Call center operations – inbound/outbound calls

• What is a Streaming Query Processing (aka: Streaming Data Store)?

– Supports continuous query processing (i.e. database-style query processing

over on-the-fly data as they arrive)

– Processes data in real time

– Used for time-sensitive monitoring and alerting

• What is it not?

– Not a permanent persistent data storage mechanism

– Not designed for adhoc querying

15IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

External Data Support

Key Capabilities

• Merge external data with dimensional and relational sources and reference in reports

• Leverage external data for prompt answers (e.g. claims, SKUs, customer lists)

• Add security and file size controls

Benefits

• Add new and broader perspectives to corporate information

• Improve confidence in information by removing long, manual, and error-prone processes of

stitching data together in Excel

• Provide users with the flexibility they are demanding to use additional data without impacting

the BI System and reduce reliance on IT to store external data in IT data stores

What is External Data Support?

Ability to augment corporate information with external file-based data (in Business Insight Advanced or Report Studio)

16IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Steps to Add External Data

Pre-requisites

• Provide users with access to “Allow External Data” capability and set appropriate governors

• Prep external data to align with corporate data, if needed

Steps

1. “Select data” to use

2. Perform “Data mapping”

3. Define “Data attributes”

4. Add “Mapping options”

Using External Data

• Publish package

• Security and Sharing

• Modify any existing reports

17IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Administration and Governors for External Data

Cognos Administration – Capabilities

Framework Manager – Package Governors

18IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Prepare the External Data File

Relationship between C10 Server and External Data

• The data in the external file will not become part of the Content Store

• The data is cached when the report is first run in a session

• Changing the original file data won’t affect any already cached data

• Any users / reports must be able to read the external data file (e.g. network drive)

• By default, running a report will ask for the location of the external file

Linking Relational vs. OLAP

• May link to an existing report or to a relational query subject

• If relational query subjects are presented as a star schema, linking to individual query

subjects will provide limited options

• Linking to OLAP enterprise data requires a report

–External data is essentially rows and columns and incompatible with OLAP structures,

so no dimensional activities available (e.g. drill up/down)

19IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

1. “Select Data” to Import

• Select external data file and choose items to import

• May allow the server to automatically load the file

• May rename namespace. Defaults to file name.

• When editing an existing package, the external data file name isn’t shown

New: Browse to file

Edit: File name not shown

20IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

2. Perform “Data Mapping”

• Specify existing report (or relational query subject)

• Create links between item

• Equi-joins only, but items can be calculations

21IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

3. Define “Data Attributes”

• Can change some attributes

• Import attempts to determine reasonable defaults

• Default aggregation is unsupported

• Only external file data items are listed

22IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

4. Add any “Mapping Options”

• Uses Non-technical terms

• Specify Cardinality on each side (All or Some values…)

• Both Inner or Outer joins are supported (Exclude / Include rows…)

23IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Publish the Package

• After the import, publish the newly created package

• The Package name and location may be changed

• Default name is original package + External Data

24IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

New Package and Metadata Tree after Publish

• Metadata tree shows newly published

external data package and a copy of the

original enterprise package

• Items from both packages in a single query

causes cross join error (use Master-Detail

to address)

• If the original package is updated, you

must republish the external data package

to pick up any changes to the original

Result of join

Copy of Original Package

25IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Security and Sharing

• The new package inherits the security of the original report’s package.

Permissions may be modified.

• To keep private, put in My Folders

• To make public, place in a public folder

• Consider access to the external data file

26IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Request External Data File

• Users may have separate external files (e.g. each Branch Manager has their

own version)

• Do not let the server automatically load the file – users will be prompted

27IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Summary – Steps to Add External Data

Pre-requisites

• Provide users with access to “Allow External Data” capability and set appropriate governors

• Prep external data to align with corporate data, if needed

What is Cognos Statistics?

Wizard-driven approach for Professional Authors to add a subset of commonly used SPSS statistical functions into Cognos 10 to include in reports and dashboards

30IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

When Might Statistics Help?

BI can answer many questions, but is not well suited to some

“What manufacturing shifts cause products to fall outside of acceptable quality standards?”

31IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Extra Value through Statistics

Quality standard were outside of their acceptable means on

these occasions

Night and Afternoon shifts are susceptible to quality issues

32IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Use Cases – Where Statistical Reporting can help to better answer business questions?

Finance

• How accurate and reliable is our current forecast and targets based on historical trends?

Human Resources

• What is our distribution on employees nearing retirement? What’s the month-over-month trend?

Sales and Marketing

• What is the correlation between marketing activity and same quarter sales? Which activities are more effective in leading to higher sales opportunities?

Operations

• What products and shifts are 3 sigmas outside of our quality control standards? What is the month-over-month trend?

33IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Easy to Use Wizards – for Creating Statistical Outputs• A wizard is available to guide novice users through building analysis charts

• Statistical items are labeled using common BI terminology and additional

helpful information is displayed

34IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

• Used to determine if a processes is ‘out of control’

• Designed to check two main areas; not matching specifications and excessive

variability

• Very common in manufacturing

Healthcare / Life Science

• Many charts available

Control Charts

35IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Basic X-Bar Variable Control Chart

• Very common control chart – shows actual values

• Flags failure to meet specifications

36IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Distribution and Shape of Data

• Useful in determining how data 'clusters' around certain values, unlike typical BI reports that

tend to show simple aggregate values

– BI – What is my average order value?

– Statistics – Do I have many high and low value orders or are they mostly average

value?

• Valuable for determining other tests to use

37IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Certain distributions are easy to see on a histogram

Bars represent count of occurrences (frequency) of a measure

Bars are continuous, ascending data values bands (e.g. ages 21-25, 26-30, etc.) NOT aggregate by grouping (e.g. not average age by Branch)

“Do we have a ‘bulge’ of employees between 50 and 55?”

Visualizing Distribution: Histograms

38IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Visualizing Distribution: Box plots

Box (IQR)

T-bars (Whiskers)

Outlier

Median

Grouping variable

• Ideal to show middle 50% clustering of your sample and outliers

– Do I have unusually high or low values in the sample?

• Shows Interquartile Range (IQR), not sigma

39IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Correlation and Regression

• Correlation determines if two variables are related in some way

– Is there a significant correlation between sales revenue and radio advertising?

• Regression can be used to predict changes to a dependent variable when an

independent variable is changed

– How much additional revenue can I expect if I increase radio advertising by

20%?

40IBM COGNOS 10: INTELLIGENCE UNLEASHED

Basic Correlation

•Correlation between -1 and +1 (0 is not

correlated)
