Good Cloud or Bad Cloud?

Nephophobia (n): is the fear of clouds. An extension of this phobia is Digital Nephophobia or the fear of cloud computing

Common fears when utilizing cloud computing are: Reliability – dependency on a remote service to host

your and maintain access to your data Security – risk management from hacking and

exposure of data to bad actors on the web Ownership – the lack of local control over company

applications and information

Digital Nephophobia

Page 4: Smart Instrumentation in the Cloud - spi-ltuf.orgspi-ltuf.org/20200211/02 SI in the Cloud.pdf · Networking firewalls and security Servers and storage Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Phobias can be overcome by facing your fears and learning more about how cloud computing works and familiarization with the elements that bother you.

Some therapies for mitigating cloud data fears are: Education – learn all you can about cloud computing,

how it works and what it can do for you Communicate – consult with trusted advisors about

your needs and how cloud computing can help you Exposure – introduce yourself to cloud services a little

at a time until you are comfortable with working in a cloud environment

Curing Digital Nephophobia

Organizations downloading software apps on their computers, or on-premises infrastructure, to run their businesses is a thing of the past. Cloud computing offers many of benefits over conventional infrastructures. Scalability – Cloud computing enables immediate

scalability of infrastructure capacity depending on the business need or user demands

Accessibility – Cloud computing allows business to deploy their applications across the globe with high-speed internet connectivity

Speed – Ability to instantly scale their cloud capacity and resources by accessing bandwidth demands from remote servers of the cloud service provider

Benefits of Cloud Computing

Page 6: Smart Instrumentation in the Cloud - spi-ltuf.orgspi-ltuf.org/20200211/02 SI in the Cloud.pdf · Networking firewalls and security Servers and storage Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Benefits of Cloud Computing continued: Cost Savings – Cloud costs depend on the

consumption rather than investing in hardware infrastructure and data centers that either remain idle, or underutilized

Updating – Dealing with several different kinds of software, operating systems, and applications require software and security updates from time to time. A cloud service provider can apply updates and patches automatically transparent to users

Recovery – Cloud providers have robust backup and disaster recovery systems in place for both large corporations and small enterprises

Benefits of Cloud Computing

Page 7: Smart Instrumentation in the Cloud - spi-ltuf.orgspi-ltuf.org/20200211/02 SI in the Cloud.pdf · Networking firewalls and security Servers and storage Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Benefits of Cloud Computing continued: Security – Protecting sensitive, personally identifiable

data and intellectual property is a considerable challenge for businesses. Advanced cloud security features and standards have reduced the risks of information loss and cyber stealth

Flexibility – Using web-enabled devices irrespective of the device type or global location accessing a cloud offers vast flexibility in access to applications and data

Collaborate – Cloud-based communication and file-sharing enable better collaboration between teams, departments and employees seated in different time zones

You already use Intergraph Smart Instrumentation (SPI) because intelligent data has tremendous value in your work processes and for populating both your project’s and your client’s operational instrument systems.

Having Smart Instrumentation in the cloud offers you advantages over traditional distribution: Reduced Time spent in installation and deployment Lower Costs since you do not need to provide server

hardware and IT infrastructure Scalability and integration – it easer to add and

remove users and integrate with other applications in the same cloud

New Hot Fix Upgrades can be automatically installed
