• Slovenian flag contains three colours: white, blue and red

The mountain represents Triglav(2864) our highest mountain. The waves are our sea and the stars are the three counts of Celje, the city that we’re at.

POPULATION

• Slovenia is a small country. We only have 2 million people living in our country.

CAPITAL

• Our capital city is Ljubljana. It counts 258.873 people.

NATIONAL ANTHEM National anthem The national anthem of Slovenia is Zdravljica, written by the most famous

Slovenian poet France Prešeren. It was written in 1844 but it wasn’t published until 1848 because of censorship. The poem has eight stanzas but we only have the seventh stanza in our national anthem.

An English translation of Zdravljica would be: Live, oh live all nations,who long and work for that bright day.When o’er earth’s habitationsNo war, no strife shall hold its sway;who long to seeThat all men freeNo more shall foes, but neighbours be. In this poem Prešeren stressed the importance of freedom, independence

and unity.

CUISINE

Slovenia is very well known for its diverse cuisine. Each dish is typical of a certain part of our country, which is consistent with landscape and its features. All dishes are excellent but also very different in taste.

Some of our traditional dishes are: nut roll (potica), prekmurska gibanica, žganci, pogača, beef soup, roast pork and roast potatoes

POINTS OF INTERESTThe nation's capital, Ljubljana, has many important baroque and

secession buildings, with several important works of the architect Jože Plečnik.

At the northwestern corner of the country lie the Julian Alps with the picturesque Lake Bled and the Soča Valley, as well as the nation's highest peak, Mount Triglav.

Other mountain ranges include Kamnik–Savinja Alps, Karavanke and Pohorje, popular with skiers and hikers.

The Karst Plateau gave its name to karst, a landscape shaped by water dissolving the carbonate bedrock, forming caves. The best-known caves are the Postojna Caves, with more than 28 million visitors.

The region of Slovenian Istria meets the Adriatic Sea, where the most important historical monument is the Venetian Gothic Mediterranean town of Piran while the settlement of Portorož attracts crowds in summer.

 The hills around Slovenia's second-largest town, Maribor, are known

for their wine-making. The northeastern part of the country is rich with spas: Rogaška

Slatina, Radenci, Čatež ob Savi, Dobrna, and Moravske Toplice.

Other popular tourist destinations include the historic cities of Ptuj and Škofja Loka, and several castles, such as the Predjama Castle.

FAMOUS PEOPLETina Maze, born in 1983, is a Slovenian alpine ski racer. She is one of

just 6 women who have won in all five World Cup events and one of three women who have won in all five disciplines in a single season. Maze has 22 World Cup victories and is the current world champion in Super-G.

 Anže Kopitar, born in 1987 is a Slovenian professional ice hockey

player of the Los Angeles Kings, USA. Kopitar became the first Slovenian to play in the NHL in 2006. He has spent his entire career with the Kings and has led the team in scoring for five consecutive seasons. Kopitar helped win the first Stanley cup championship in Kings history in 2012.

 Benka Pulko, born in 1967, is a Slovenian world traveler. She holds a

Guinness World Record for the longest solo motorcycle ride ever undertaken by a woman - in both distance 180,015 km and duration 2,000 days. She also became the first motorcyclist to reach Antarctica, and the first woman to ride solo across Saudi Arabia.

 Aljaž Škorjanec, born in 1990 is a Slovenian professional dancer. He

is a 19-time national champion in Ballroom and Latin dance. In 2013 he danced in BBC show Strictly Come Dancing with a British model Abbey Clancy. They became the winners of the 2013 competition.
