● “Why did haiku help to unblock me? Having a definite form to commit to and write in was a big part of myy process. It's difficult to write 'freely' after never having given yourself freedom of this sort before and to simply say, 'Write', just was too much. It's like a prisoner who has served a twenty year term suddenly being dumped out of the prison gates with a suit of clothes and cab fare to the city. It's just too sharp a transition. To continue with the analogy, haiku was for me like entering the half-way house after my self-imposed imprisonment. I could not handle full freedom and needed a restricted form first to begin to awaken and exercise my long suppressed instincts and desires.”
