Estate Based Sports

• Youth Justice Board identify tackling boredom and alienation as key to reducing youth crime

• Estate based sports:– 190 hours of free sport every week– 66% of participants from low income groups– 95% young people say the sessions give them a “buzz”– British Transport Police now a funding partner– Involvement of NGB’s eg; Amateur Boxing Association & FA

• Vast majority live less than 10 minutes walk from sessions• Reward regular participants with coaching courses, leading to

employment and running sessions• 72% think recent sport and culture have made Newham a safer

place to live
