Hi all Welcome to 2014 with SRSDC. Firstly Id like to thank the Committee for putting their hands up to do the hard yards for the club, and I encourage all our mem- bers to get behind the Club and help out at any areas they are able too. Our summer here in Dunedin has been more like winter, with there often being a number of days Ive thought of getting the dogs out for a run. Heres hoping we do get a few more days of summer before we all start thinking about winter training. It has been great following Curt Perano, a fellow Kiwi who started off his snow racing at Wanaka Sled Dog Festival in the two dog class with mallies, successfully complete the Yukon Quest. This year the Quest threw a real mixed bag of weather and condi- tions were very trying for all. A big congratulations to Curt and his team. Next up he will be starting the Iditarod. We wish him a safe journey. The Committee has had its first meeting of the year and we are planning on having an Open Day followed by a couple of Have a godays. Dates will be emailed to members once finalised. We welcome any sugges- tions for these days, just email me or a Committee member. This newsletter already has a bit in it, so Ill keep it short this time around. Also a reminder keep an eye on www.nzfss.org.nz for race dates of sanctioned events. Jon Jon Jon Jon ---- PresidentPresidentPresidentPresident As I was work-ing when the AGN was on, my lovely wife Sarah nominated me as President, she even then accepted the nomination on my behalf. So here I am again! Ny first involvement with racing was when

Sarah hooked Novac up and handed me the scooter in the pitch dark and said ‘it’s alright Novac knows where to go’ and off we went around Berwick Forest scooter course. I made my way back & then it has been a competition since who was going to run the dogs, with me usually winning I’ve raced most classes (still working my way to 6 dog!) have even done single dog freight a few times! Have been lucky enough to race at Dinner Plain - a snow race in Australia and then Race Narshall at Can-berra which had over 100 entries. I have been involved on the Committee for 10 years and am hoping for a gold watch at 20 years!

Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah ---- SecretarySecretarySecretarySecretary I have been a member of Southern Regions since 1997 when I got my first Siberian Husky, Novac. He was a real handful and I happened to hear about sled dog racing and thought it could be a good outlet for all his energy. Ny first race was the Origin held at Berwick forest in 1998. I remember being on the start line, and was really nervous, back then scooters were few & far between & most of us had bikes with pedals disabled. Nost of the dogs racing were Siberians back then too. We managed to finish the race and after that I was hooked. Now I’m owned by 7 Siberians, with 4 of them being imported from Australia. We also have a small flock of Arapawa Island Sheep, which are a rare breed and come in all sorts of colours. During my involvement with SRSDC I think I have just about held every position possible from Newsletter Editor to WSDF Race Co-ordinator. I have also been the NZFSS Secretary for two terms now. I really must be a sucker for punishment!

I'm thrilled that we have a Treasurer 'waiting in the wings' for next year. Ny actual sled dog racing experience is minimal, but I have been involved in supportive roles with SRSDC for over 15 years since Sarah got her first husky Novac. It's a great family oriented sport and the smiles on the dog's faces whilst racing say it all really. In my other life I work at Anglican Family Care, love most sports and am involved in local community groups. Ny wish for this year is that all members support and promote the Club and it's activities, and that we gain new members to take over from the 'oldies'.

Peter JohnsPeter JohnsPeter JohnsPeter Johns I have been in our club now for a couple or so years. Over that time our dogs and I have done a wee bit of racing mostly with views from the back of the race field, some weightpull (small dogs rule), and the odd (very odd) canicross. Also I have helped out on the committee for a few years thanks to the tolerance of the other committee members. While our dogs have almost retired from racing, we (the dogs and I) still enjoy being part of all the club activities and look forward to the coming year.

Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah NcNahonNcNahonNcNahonNcNahon I am the new treasurer in waiting for the SRSDC this year and am looking forward to it! Ny Daughter Jordyn and

I got involved with the SRSDC through my parents (Peter, club VP, is my stepfather). We were initially racing under Num and Peter’s family membership. When I say racing I mean I had one race with my parents dog Holly on the scooter, it was a lot faster than I was prepared for, took about 10mins to pry my hands of the

bar and that so far has been my racing experience. Jordyn though loves it and is very enthusiastic about the racing and has competed in over half dozen events with my parents dogs. This year we have our own membership and a new addition to our family, our very own dog Tess! Its very exciting! Tess is a Staffordshire terrier, lab x and we hope to race her in single dog scooter and weight pull (when she’s a bit older). SRDSC is very family orientated and the racing really is for everyone and every breed !!

Let us start by introduction our-selves ... I’m Emmy - am almost 5 years old Shetland Sheepdog. I love herding anything from my pet kitten Halo, to my biggest bestest malamute friends,

Nillie, Kobe, Narco and Naia Naydon (ok not Nillie - cos no-one

tells her what to do }). I love running fast, so mum and I do a bit of cani-cross and bike joring (when she isn’t injured or when she can be bothered). I enjoyed being part of the sled dog club last year, and going on many adventures. And now I’m excited to join with my friend sidekick Stig in bringing you our adventures of 2014.

Woof Some say ... He can clear the room in seconds ....

Some say ... He can lead his team to the middle of no-where Some say ... ‘He’s not the smartest dog on the block’ All we know is .... He’s called Sidekick Stig

Dogs in ActionDogs in ActionDogs in ActionDogs in Action About two years ago Naria Alomajan was at Wanaka Sled Dog Festival finding out what sled dog racing was all about. Her book ‘Dogs in Action - Working Dogs and their Stories’ is now out in book stores. Although I haven’t yet read all the book I would certainly recommend people getting a copy, it has some really interesting stories about the different types of service dogs and sports dogs. It covers everything from sled dogs, assistance dogs, rescue dogs, conservation dogs to psychiatric service dogs. It gives such a good insight on what our amazing four legged friends are capable of doing to assist us in everyday life.

why you cannot help at a race or event.

We are currently looking for someone to co-ordinate The Origin (or help with organising), with assistance from the Committee.

If you are interested in coordinating The Origin please let us know as soon as possible so the planning can being!

Please also let us know ways you can help, we can then all work together for the same purpose - our Club and the sport of sled dog racing.

Please RSVP to Jon [email protected]

Did you know that 2/3rds of the SRDC Club Nembership consists of people form outside of Dunedin! Logistically, this means that continually the same core people are the ones doing the event organising.

The SRSDC Committee wants every Club member to feel part of their Club. No matter where you live, with modern technology, there is no reason

You would of all seen the email sent recently regarding the upcoming NZFSS AGN and voting on Remits. This may all seem rather confusing so hopefully the below will help to clarify things. Every year the NZFSS holds an AGN and prior to this Clubs have the opportunity to put ‘Remits’ in - these are proposed changes to the current rules. From here the Remits are sent to all Clubs for voting on prior to the AGN. This then means every SRSDC club member is entitled to vote on the proposed remit. The exception to this is if you are a member of several clubs you only vote with one club. This year there are three remits and if we use the first one as an example; Remit 1 - Race Temps, this proposing a change to the way temperatures at race events are recorded. You can read in more detail why on the documents emailed. If you agree with the change reply YES to remit 1, if

you disagree reply NO to remit one. The other item to vote on is the NZ Distance Sled Dog Club has applied to be a full member of the NZFSS. They have supplied a Race Narshall’s report from last years event as evidence of running a successful event. Reply and let me know if you agree or disagree they should become full members. Every second year is also Officer Election year and new Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer) can only be elected from current NZFSS Club Reps. So if you were interested in standing for an Officer position with the NZFSS you will need to contact Jon ([email protected]) to be elected as the Club Rep first. I know this all probably seems very confusing, but don’t hesitate to contact a Committee Nember if you would like any more information. We are more than happy to answer any questions.

In the past, the club has sold various forms of apparel, from Tshirts to jackets/vests, caps to Beanies.

The committee favours Beanies, however are open to your suggestions.

Please email Secretary Sarah [email protected] and let her know which or what you would prefer.

- Rigs/Scooters - Check tyres & rims, make sure your brakes are working and brake pads in good condition - Other Bits - Nake sure lights/batteries still work, helmets in good order, check drop lines & tie out lines, ensure you have booties and some first aid supplies - Vehicle - Good time to get your vehicle serviced/checked before winter, also give your dog trailer (if you have one) a good check - Nusher - perfect time to come along on some club works and burn off some Christmas pudding!

We will be having a gear clean up day at Wingatui on 15th Narch (time to be advised). Another date to mark in your diary if you are able to come along and lend a hand for an hour or so it would be appreciated. We need to have a sort out of all the club gear and ensure it’s in good working order before race season begins

Woof

With our wintery summer weather now is the perfect time to give your gear a general check over. Some things to check are: - Dog Harnesses - check condition, give them a wash and check they still fit your dog especially if it’s been eating lots of Christmas goodies

- Tug Lines - check conditions of lines, bungy's and clasps/snaps are all working, also check your caribeneer and attachment point to scooter & rig

It would be great to have as many club members as possible available to help on the day, this could be anything from greeting people, having a chat to them about racing, weight pull, canicross or bikejor, help with set up/pack up.

If you are able to come along on the day please RSVP to [email protected]
