    SIERRA LUTHERAN CHURCH

    MAY 2012

    NEWSLETTERShe is clothed with strength and dignity;

she can laugh at the days to come.

    She speaks with wisdom,

and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

She watches over the affairs of her household and

does not eat the bread of idleness.

    Her children arise and call her blessed;

her husband also, and he praises her:

Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Give her the reward she has earned,

and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

    KITCHEN CORNER

I DO HOPE ALL YOU GRANDMOTHERS, MOTHERS, DAUGHTERS AND EVEN SONS WILL READ THE FOLLOWING

I have been thinking of a word that would not come to me, however; in Pastor Carls sermon he said the word

    NOSTALGIA that was the word.

In a magazine this article said UNPLUG YOUR DISHWASHERS. Family conversations start over a meal flowsnaturally into the cleanup process. I learned important facts of life while washing and drying dishes that I

might not have learned otherwise. Somehow, sensitive topics tend to be easier to discuss when youre elbow

    deep in soapsuds.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reading this brought so much back to me that I wanted to share with you. I represent those ladies that are

now in their seventies and eighties. We were so lucky to have our mothers who had gone through so many

rough times; wars that took so much from them, depression and so many hard times. I was so lucky to have a

MOTHER and MOTHER-IN-LAW that we spent many a MOTHERS DAY with.

My mom lived in a two bedroom, one bath, living room, kitchen, covered patio and large yard. On that special

day her whole family would come to her home in Dos Palos. My mother-in-law would also come. There would

be over thirty people at times crowded in the living room watching a game while playing cards. Kids out side

playing volleyball, croquet, more cards outside. A line up would always be at the bathroom while they

harassed the poor guy they were waiting for.

After a dinner that we used as much paper as possible; the ladies would all be in the kitchen washing mounds

of pots and pans, some stacking, some washing, drying, putting away and so forth. Here is where we, meaning

the younger than our moms, learned so much from these women. They laughed so much about some of the

things they did to feed and keep the family going. My mom was born in 1906, my mother-in-law born in 1909.

They said what they went through was not funny at all at the time. We all just sat there listening to them

reminisce. We learned so much about all things, recipes, how to do this or that. I AM SO GLAD I HAD THISTIME WITH MY FAMILY WHILE DOING DISHES. When I was still home in my teens, of course it took my mom a

while before I stopped pouting because I had to help her. She always got me talking. She would start by sayin

something about her day at work. Gosh! My mom had a life that wasnt about me? I then would tell her

about my problem for the day and the conversation would go on from there.

I hope all you moms out there have a place where you can talk to your children or moms like I experienced.

NOSTALGIASomething past and never to be repeated.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO YOU ALL

    FOOD BANK NEWS

There are a few items to update. As most of you are aware, the food bank has received two new freezers

thanks to the Community Food Bank in Fresno. These freezers came to us through a Walmart grant to

provide funding to set up new food pantries and, in our case, support for an existing program. We are verythankful to the Community Food Bank for their support of the food bank at SLC.

We are officially up and running with the MarVal cash for receipt program. This community outreach by

MarVal is used to channel cash to community groups which serve local needs. If you are interested in using

this opportunity to support the food bank, please turn in your store receipts. All money received will go

towards food purchases used in our pantry food giveaway.

Intermountain Nursery is working with us again this year to give our clients tomato plants to take home for

their own use. We purchase plants from the nursery at a reduced cost for this addition to our distribution.

As before, we plan on both a spring and fall plant offerings. Ray has also donated last years vegetable

seeds for our clients to use in their gardens.

Thanks to all for your faithful support and volunteer commitment.

The party can be held any time between March 2012 and January 30, 2013.

There can be a set date or an open date. We will promote the parties from now untilJanuary 2013. We will have people sign up for available parties in March 2012 and have

the money your party earns to cover your expenses if you wish. The hope is that your

party will make money than you spend to put it on.

Giving a party is a way for you to help the church with expenses during a difficult time.

It is also a way to get to know other church members better. The money will be

deposited in SLCS general fund to help offset church expenses.

experience? As the party planner, you can limit the size of your group, decide what

your event will cost and pick your time and date.

When forwarded, an email using BCC is one way to reduce the amount of spam your recipientsmight get as the email is forwarded further. byLeo A. Notenboom,

Question: Is it true that if I use BCC to email attachments, it will mean less danger of spam? How'sthat?

It's not so much about attachments, as it is anyemailyou receive and then forward. And it's not somuch about saving yourself from getting more spam, but saving the people that sent you the email

you're about to forward. It's all about keeping theiremail addressesprivate and un-harvestable.The scenario works like this: you get a wonderful piece of humor via email - maybe a joke, somegoofy pictures, or something else that you want to forward to your friends. (Note: never forwardanything that actually asks you to forward it without checking it out first. It's likely anurban legend.)Themailyou got looks something like this:

From: [email protected]: [email protected]: [email protected], [email protected],

    [email protected], [email protected],[email protected]

Subject: This is funnyI thought this joke was kinda funny:A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said, ...

(All the email addresses are fake, and just for example purposes.)

Your friendhas emailed you some humor, and cc'd a number of other people. Think about that for amoment. You can see all the email addresses on the CC line. If you're a spammer, you just got 5more known-valid email addresses that you can add to yourlist of email addressesto spam. In fact, any of the people on the CC linecould do this as well. But it gets worse. You think this joke is reallyfunny, and worth forwarding on to more of your friends, so you hit "Forward", and create amessagethat looks like this:

From: [email protected]: [email protected], [email protected],

[email protected], [email protected]: FW: This is funny

    Pretty cute...

    > From: [email protected]> To: [email protected]> Cc: [email protected], [email protected],

Just look at all the email addressesthat are visible to anyonewho gets this message. It's a veritable golmine of known-good emailaddresses that they can then use for any purpose they wish. Spam, of courseis the most obvious, but there are a raft of privacy issues that result as well. And after the message hasbeen forwarded a few times the list of juicy email addresses at the top often exceeds the length of theactual message at the bottom! (And you'd be surprised at how often the resulting email messages getsforwarded by someone to a mailing list that is archived on theweb, where it a) lives pretty much foreverand b) is even more easily harvested by spammers.)There are two things you must do to avoid adding to the problem:

Use BCC for the recipients. This will prevent the email addresses you send the humor to frombeing visible to the people that get it. (How you do this will vary from mail program to mailprogram, but almost all have it.)

Edit out any email addresses in the body of the message before you send. This will remove althe prior recipients from being visible, and has the added benefit of making the email easier toread.

Of course you should always consider whether the message should be forwarded at all, but I'll assumeyou've made that decision properly. So this time, when we forward that original, we do those two things:

    1. Instead of entering all those addresses on the TO or CC lines, we send the message "to"

ourselves, and put all the recipients on the BCC line. (with some programs you can leave the toline blank)

    2. After pressing the "Forward" button, but before pressing "Send",clickin the body of the messageand simply delete all the lines that are nothing more than forwarded email headers.

Using the example from above, here's the result:From: [email protected]: [email protected]: [email protected], [email protected],

[email protected], [email protected]: FW: This is funny

    Pretty cute...

What the people getting this message seeis this:From: [email protected]: [email protected]: FW: This is funny

    Pretty cute...

Not an email address to be found.Nothing for spammers to harvest.
