New Features and Enhancements

Foundation Modeling• When you update a template from a local style, you are now given the choice of whether to keep or override

local styles for other objects that use the template.

• Changes you make to the columns in a drop-down list are now retained the next time you open the drop-down list.

• When you edit local marker sets, you can now apply your changes to multiple markers and marker sets at the same time. (To access the Edit Marker Sets command: from the Objects browser, right-click the markerset category for a well and select Edit Local Marker Sets.)

• In the Macro Editor, it is now easier for you to locate scripting errors from the Macro Sequence tab. For example, text within quotation marks is now highlighted (as purple text), and variables are highlighted (as bold text) only if they appear without quotation marks.

• You can now copy a Macro Player workflow by right-clicking the workflow in the Scenarios browser and selecting Copy.

• When you record a macro by using Record (Commands Inactive) (on the Command Recorder toolbar), you can now leave all command parameters undefined.

Data Importing and Exporting• In SKUA, when you export a flow simulation grid to ECLIPSE, the command now automatically exports the

MAPAXES keyword (which specifies the local coordinate system for the grid), unless you change the setting. You can find this setting by selecting File > Export > SGrid > ECLIPSE > ASCII and then clicking the Advanced tab in the dialog box.

• When you import objects from a project, the dialog box now includes the object name, scenario, domain, and user to better differentiate between the objects.

• When you import micro-seismic data, you can now use the Time toolbar to display events by date and time.

Sharing Data with Epos®-Enabled Applications

The following items apply when you run SKUA from the Paradigm Session Manager.

• From the Epos repository, you can now open facies logs as discrete logs when the classification information for the log was previously saved to Epos by using the File > Save Discrete Log command and when the corresponding classification exists in the session when you load the log. You can also now save discrete logs to the Epos repository.

• The File > Reload Wells command now resets the logs in StratEarth. (Logs that were activated in Epos since the initial loading are loaded in StratEarth, whereas any logs that were deactivated are removed.)

• When using the File > More Open Options > Open Logs command, you can now open multiple logs from Epos at one time.

• You can now configure SKUA to automatically send any marker changes made in SKUA back to Epos so that the updated markers are immediately available to other listening Epos-enabled applications. To enable marker

synchronization, click the arrow ( ) next to Listen for events from Epos on the toolbar and select Save modified markers automatically.

• In a multi-survey project, when you save SKUA horizons and faults to Epos, you can now save to surveys or projects.

• SKUA now supports customized Epos well symbols.

• You can now use the Wells > Tools > Simplify Discrete Logs command to create, edit, and simplify discrete log classifications that you open from Epos.

• SKUA now correctly displays Epos projects that use negative z-scaling.

Map, Cross Section, and Well Section• Performance has been significantly improved when you display a large number of well tracks and pillars in well

sections (see Fig. 1).

• You can now display well tracks (log, scale, interval, stratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, schematics, and image) in a cross section along projected well paths. For an example, see Fig. 2.

• You can now control the transparency of log tracks (see Fig. 2).

• You can now overlay adjacent well tracks. In a well section view or in the Wells browser, right-click the track that you want to overlay on the track immediately to the left, and then select Style Editor to open the styles for the track. Then select the Overlay box. For an example of track overlay, see Fig. 3.

• You can now display logs with linear and logarithmic scales in the same log track, with a choice of displaying either linear or logarithmic grid lines in the track. For more information, see Fig. 4.

• In a cross section view, the Pillar browser in Display Elements is now called the Wells and Pillars browser and now works with projected well tracks.

• In a well section, you can now zoom in on an area of interest by using Box Zoom .

• You can now display the map distance between wells at the top of a well section. For an example, see Fig. 5.

• You can now create an alias for well names (Well commands > Tools > Well Constants > Rename Well from Alias).

• Automatic horizontal scrolling has been enabled while in horizon interpretation mode in a cross section view. When you move the pointer to the edge of the view, the view now automatically scrolls in the direction of the pointer.

• You can now limit the extent of the tracks displayed for a well in a cross section. Previously, the view automatically displayed tracks along the full extent of the well path, limited only by the height of the cross section view. You can change this setting in the styles for projected tracks associated with a well under the Limits area.

• You can now control the transparency of a log fill so that you partially view the data beneath the fill. In the Wells browser or Wells and Pillars browser, right-click the log and select Log Style Editor.

• The display of scale track value increments has been improved.

• In cross section views, you can now pick markers and use Drag and Drop Log and Marker by Ghosting on projected wells.

Modeling Fault Network

• You can now specify the vertical resolution to use when building the fault network. You can also use Guess Resolution Distance from Data . For the vertical resolution, the “guessed” value is based on the vertical scale of the 3D Viewer.

• You can now switch the branching fault to the other side of the main fault. To access this feature, in the Fault Editor, click the Contact tab, and then click Switch Branching Fault Side.

Note: In this version a known limitation is that the switch is not preserved if you rebuild the fault network. For example, after you do the following actions:

Delete the Fault Network object manually

Modify the volume of interest (VOI)

Change the areal or vertical resolution

Add, move, or remove fault markers

Modeling Horizons

The interface of the Modeling Horizons task has been redesigned (see Fig. 6) to provide the following:

• Direct access to the horizon input data editing tools

• Better presentation of the preview and build options

• Better presentation of the workflow state (it is now easier to distinguish between horizons not yet built, previewed horizons, and built horizons)

• Better overview of input data when you select the horizon, which allows you to filter horizons according to their sequence or input data, for instance

• Improved documentation and instructions in the interface to help you identify issues and clean data (see the section in the Help “To troubleshoot horizon problems”)

Honoring Well Data

• SKUA now detects when a well crosses a fault network surface without a fault marker. To ensure that the horizon markers are on the proper fault side, in the Issue Report table, SKUA now proposes these fixes:

Use an automatic command that bends the fault away from the well path.

Use the surface reshaping tool to manually drag the surface away from the path.

You can also choose to ignore this issue.

• When you reshape a fault surface, SKUA now considers the presence of fault markers. It automatically reduces the area of influence to ensure the surface is fit to the fault marker.

• The Faulted-Out missing marker status is now supported for both well data fitting options (Constrained by distance and Adapt to mismatch options in the Honoring Well Data task). The supported missing marker statuses are shown in the following table.

Miscellaneous

• When you switch from one Structure and Stratigraphy workflow to another, SKUA updates the display of ignored regions.

• In the Issue Report table, after you click Show to highlight the areas associated with a reported issue (shown in the 3D Viewer with red balls), you can now hide the red balls by clicking Show again.

• The Validate button for faults, fault contacts, and horizons has been renamed Flag Feature. The flag is not removed when you recompute the feature. As in previous releases, flagging does not "freeze" a feature or have any other affect on the SKUA model. Flagging is a record-keeping tool. You can flag features for any purpose, for example, to indicate the feature includes picked interpretation data.

Interpretation Modeling• The flatten view (in the Viewer task of the Interpretation Modeling Workflow, under Display flatten views to

use for interpreting) is now available again.

• The unit above the top horizon is now added to the stratigraphic column that is automatically computed by the Interpretation Modeling Workflow.

• We improved the performance when interpreting in the flatten view.

• In the Compute Attributes task of the Interpretation Modeling Workflow, you can now compute the following curvature attributes (located on the Geometric tab):

strike curvature

contour curvature

curvedness

shape index

Well Correlation and Stratigraphic Analysis• Keyboard shortcuts for selecting, activating, and moving markers have been added to streamline marker

correlation:

• In a cross section, you can now draw a facies interpretation in the panel area of a cross section view, between

wells or pillars. (On the Facies Interpretation toolbar, click Create Interpretation .)

• In well sections and cross sections, you can now display the name of the Epos marker set with the markers in log tracks.

Shortcut Description

A Enable the Create Marker digitization tool (on the Well Picks toolbar) for adding a marker of the selected name.

S Select the marker at the location of the pointer in the view.

M Enable Move Marker (on the Well Picks toolbar) for moving a marker.

D Delete the marker at the location of the pointer in the view.

G Enable Drag and Drop Log and Marker by Ghosting (on the Well Picks toolbar).

F Flatten (or unflatten) the view. With the focus of the pointer in the well section view, press F to turn on or off flattening at the last flattened marker.

F10 Fit to view.

F11 Turn on or off full screen view.

HOME Switch the view to that saved as the Home View (on the View toolbar).

CTRL+A Select the name of the marker at the location of the pointer in the view and enable Create Marker (on the Well Picks toolbar) for adding a marker with the selected name.

Facies ModelingIn the Multiple Point Statistics Workflow, when you run a facies simulation with a search template that is larger than the training image, the workflow now automatically reduces the search template to the maximum possible size and continues the simulation. Previously, the workflow presented an error message, which stopped the simulation.

Flow Simulation Grid (SKUA Only)• You now select only the highlighted units (Fig. 7) when you specify which units to include in the flow simulation

grid, and the interface now prevents you from selecting non-contiguous units (Fig. 8).

• In previous versions of SKUA, you could choose to ensure that all cells intersected by the well paths were in the proper fault blocks (on the correct side of the fault). SKUA now performs this task automatically. However, a known limitation in this version is that an exact fit to fault markers is still not ensured.

Production Data Analysis

Plotting production data is now up to four times faster.

Fixed Problems

Foundation Modeling• In SKUA, when you create a region from a closed polygon for a geologic grid, the region geometry is now

computed correctly.

Note: In this version, regions may still appear incorrect, especially near faults, due to a known issue with the display of regions.

• When you import well logs in LAS format or from column-based files, no-data values are now set correctly.

• When you copy a surface and select the option to copy regions, the copied regions are no longer empty.

Data Importing and Exporting

Charisma format fault sticks are now imported correctly. Fault sticks were sometimes imported incorrectly if they were first exported to Charisma format by a third-party program.

Sharing Data with Epos-Enabled Applications

The following items apply when you run SKUA from the Paradigm Session Manager.

• When you access the command to save a SKUA model to the Epos project by right-clicking the model in the 3D Viewer, the command now works. Previously, the command worked only when accessed from the File menu or by right-clicking the model in the Objects browser.

• When you access the command to save a SKUA horizon grid to the Epos project by right-clicking the grid in the 3D Viewer or the Objects browser, the command now works. Previously the command worked only when accessed from the File menu.

• When you import logs from Epos, the original log units are now retained.

• When you save markers to Epos, markers are now saved along with their associated feature information.

• When you save a well, which was originally opened from an Epos project, to a file in GOCAD ASCII format, the well is now properly reloaded when you reopen the file.

• When you save or send objects, such as interpreted horizons or faults, to 3D Canvas:

For objects interpreted or created from a single survey, the commands now automatically save the objects to the correct survey in the Epos project.

For objects interpreted from multiple surveys or objects with no specified survey, the commands now include a selector for you to specify the data server (an Epos project or survey).

Note: If the objects were interpreted from multiple surveys and you do not specify the data server, the data server is automatically set as the Epos project.

• In a cross section or well section view, when you display markers across log tracks along with the name of the Epos marker set (by selecting the Show original marker set option on the Markers page, in the Style dialog box for a well track), and then you:

Copy markers by using Drag and Drop Log and Marker by Ghosting (on the Well Picks toolbar), the new markers are now properly assigned to features.

Save markers back to the Epos project, the marker set name is no longer appended to the names of the markers.

Map, Cross Section, and Well Section• In a cross section view, the box zoom now remains centered on the selected area.

• When you select Fit to View, the view now fits perfectly inside the window.

• The Style dialog box for a well in a cross section view no longer has obsolete settings.

• The button for picking wells in the 3D Viewer to create a well section now works correctly.

• Changes to the minimum and maximum log scale values in the Style Editor are now retained the next time you open the Style Editor.

• The well section scale and the scale for a track are now aligned when you display them in the same vertical domain.

• Pointer tracking between the 3D Viewer and a cross section view with seismic displayed now works properly.

• In a well section, the fill color used for a log no longer “leaks” below the well total depth.

• Well tracks and pillars in cross section views now retain their size when you select Fit to View and then save and reopen the project.

• In well sections with many wells, when you turn off some of the wells, extra space no longer appears in the remaining well tracks and pillars.

• The File > Export > View > CGM from 3D Viewer command now works only with 3D Viewers, as expected, and you can use the new File > Export > View > CGM from 2D Viewer command to export 2D views. Previously, the CGM from 3D Viewer command displayed 2D Viewers in the list and did not export 2D views correctly.

• The scale track ticks and depth labels now use the same vertical increment.

• When you select Edit > Reporting Unit Preferences, the dialog box now opens. Previously, you could open the dialog box only from the Data tab by showing the Templates browser, right-clicking a reporting unit template, and selecting Edit.

• In a well section view, when you change the domain, flatten, unflatten, move a marker, or close and reopen the view, the displayed depth interval no longer shifts vertically to a shallower level, and the zoom factor is maintained.

Input Data

• Well lists for the wells you select in the Selecting Data: Horizons task are now published in the Lists browser and are available in commands. These lists are protected; you cannot edit or delete them while the workflow exists.

• Intraformational interpretation data for horizons is now properly ignored when deselected in the Selecting Data: Horizons task.

Fault Network Modeling

• If you edit a fault marker (by adding, deleting, or moving a fault marker, or changing the fault feature for the marker), the fault network is now properly rebuilt to include this change when you do the change within the workflow (on the Workflows tab with the Structure and Stratigraphy Workflow opened).

• The Fault Editor includes the following changes:

When you change a fault contact type, the fault extension is no longer modified.

Now, when you rebuild the fault outline, the command no longer recreates any contacts that you added by using the Add Branching tool.

Redrawing a branching contact line now automatically changes the contact status to Edited.

Updating the fault network no longer uses the Global rebuild options. It preserves all contact types and all extensions. The Global rebuild options are now used only when you click Build Fault Network.

For information about known limitations related to preserving fault contacts, see “Known Limitations” on page 18.

Building Fault Blocks

• Unknown fault contacts no longer prevent SKUA from building the fault blocks.

• Fault block construction has been significantly improved to reduce reported failures. However, there are still known issues in which fault block construction is not always successful for all fault configurations and resolutions. Further improvements are planned for future releases.

Modeling Horizons

SKUA has been improved to better manage insufficient data in a fault block:

• When you select the Horizons bounding uneven thickness units option, and there is not enough data to build the horizon correctly, SKUA now creates an issue report with proposed fixes.

• When there is not enough data in a fault block (for example, only one marker) to constrain a horizon, the horizon geometry is now flat, rather than tilted, and SKUA displays a warning in the Terminal.

Note: This configuration occurs more frequently when you preview individual horizons than when you build all horizons.

Honoring Well Data

Numerous fixes have been done to improve the fit of horizons to well data, especially when the model contains several sequences.

Note: However, when a marker is very close to a fault, the marker is still ignored when honoring well data. A resolution to this limitation is planned for a future release.

Miscellaneous

• If the only data you have is well markers, Guess the vertical extension of the VOI now works correctly.

• Ignored points from SKUA versions earlier than 2011 are now properly reset when clicking Reset all points.

• Select Shown in the Structure and Stratigraphy Workflow now works correctly.

Interpretation Modeling• You can now drag and drop an object to a geologic feature in the Workflow Objects browser of the

Interpretation Modeling Workflow.

• You can now access the context menu for SKUA objects in the 3D Viewer when in restricted mode.

• Fault surfaces are now displayed properly in the flatten view.

Well Correlation and Stratigraphic Analysis• Digitizing curves on cross sections is now working properly. Previously, the digitization was not working

correctly because the curves were projected instead of being in the plane of the cross section.

• In a marker track, you can now display individual marker sets, rather than only the active marker set.

• When you flatten the view at multiple markers, the markers and correlations are now correctly offset, and the solid painting is now correct when some of the markers are not assigned to horizons or markers are missing. SKUA now more easily accommodates missing markers and displays a warning message if the markers are not present or not assigned to horizon features.

• Moving and editing markers in a well section is now working when in flatten mode.

Note: You cannot edit the flattened marker.

• In a cross section or well section view, when you copy a marker from one well to another by using Drag and Drop Log and Marker by Ghosting (on the Well Picks toolbar), the command no longer creates a temporary duplicate of the marker name in the view.

Reservoir PropertiesIn the Reservoir Properties Workflow, you can now specify the simulation domain for a property by selecting region names that contain spaces.

Flow Simulation Grid (SKUA Only)• When you build the flow simulation grid, fault faces are now properly allocated to fault subsets to prevent holes

in the flow simulation grid.

• Fitting unconformable horizons to well markers (the Fit to well markers option in the Build the Flow Simulation Grid task) is no longer causing holes in the flow simulation grid.

Note:

We recommend that you also fit the structural model to well markers before you build the flow simulation grid. A large mismatch between markers and horizons can cause degenerated cells when you perform the fitting.

Fitting faults to markers is not supported in this version.

• SKUA no longer displays error messages for each marker when building the flow simulation grid if you select the Fit to well marker option and there are ignored missing units.

Known Limitations

The following include known limitations and recommendations related to preserving fault contacts in the SKUA Structure and Stratigraphy Workflow.

• SKUA preserves only the contact type, as long as the contact continues to exist. A contact may no longer be present for several reasons, for example, due to a change to the smoothing level or a reduction in the outline extension.

• If you delete the fault network either manually or by rebuilding the volume of interest, no editing is preserved.

• When the fault network must be rebuilt or you recompute fault geometry, some edits cannot be preserved depending on the action that initiates the rebuild or recomputation. Table 1, "Preserving fault edits" shows which changes are preserved when you click Build Fault Network with the Keep all contact types and Keep edited extensions options selected. Improvements in this area are planned for future versions.

We recommend that you edit the input data so that it reflects the final fault geometry and contacts, such as by specifying which data to consider and which to ignore. For example:

• The branching side computed by the workflow depends on the input data geometry; therefore, ignoring the data on the wrong side of the fault should ensure that the branching side remains correct when recomputed.

• If you added a contact by using the Add Branching tool, this contact may not be preserved if you recompute the fault extension. Picking data near the contact and adding it to the workflow may preserve this contact during a recomputation of fault extensions.
